ive been debating between babble live and worlds across for a whiiiile now so i'm so excited you made this review! i'm relieved that worlds across is more ethical than a lot of these other platforms as well. and i really like the coaching aspect bc it seems nice someone will help me be more organized than i usually am lmkdskj

Yeah I'm oddly interested in the coaching too. But also kind of skeptical. I've got lots of experience studying languages so I doubt they'll tell me anything I haven't already heard but I'm still curious.

Hi, thanks so much for this video and also your thoughtful comments about wages etc... I think these things need to be considered. If only worlds across had tutors from Spain I would go for it.

Hello Again. A while ago I commented on one of your videos that Babbel Live would be offering French private lesson starting sometime this fall. I just wanted you to know that day is now! Babbel rolled this out in the Eastern part of the US on Tuesday, but I'm pretty sure it'll be available everywhere soon.

Hey did you like the 1-1 worlds across or the 1-1 babbel live better? Were they very different? After doing a sprint on lingoda I've narrowed it down to one of these platforms for the next 3-6 months, then ill probably switch to the other after. I'm thinking of starting with babbel live 1-1 then going into worlds across later cause babbel live is cheaper for right now. But if the higher price is that much better i am still considering worlds across. I want private 1-1 lessons for max time efficiency in the language so thats primary what i'm looking for. I really like your channel by the way!

@@AdamH-n3l I think the idea of doing some of both is a good one, they appeal to slightly different audiences I think & i think it would only take a month to figure out your preference. WA is more customizable and self-driven, so if you are particular about how you want the classes to go or what to talk about, it’s a better option for that. It also offers 90 minute classes which is twice as long as babbel, if you’d prefer to have a long convo with the same tutor. Babbel live is much easier to drop in and out of, and is more structured. If I could only choose one, I’d choose Babbel. Edit - also thanks!!

Hi I was just wondering... Considering Babel live unlimited private classes with group lessons is significantly cheaper than worldsacross (especially if you buy a multiple month sub), do you think worldsacross has an edge in any area? One thing I know with worldsacross is they are flexible with what you do during your lesson. Are the Babel live tutors strict on following Babels lesson plans (during private lessons), or can you ask them just to have a conversation with you about something else, or to read something else together and discuss it? Thanks

I've had several private lessons on Babbel Live where the teacher asked if I preferred to do the lesson or something else, and I've had a few where they say something like - do you have any questions before we jump in? and then i've had a lot that just start the material. So I think you could probably build your own roster of teachers who would do it? But I haven't tried and it's definitely not as structurally supported as it is on WA. I would say the unique-ness WA is offering is the individual attention (guided plan/coaching), the customizability, the "community" aspect (tutors seem to genuinely know and befriend some of the subscribers, the group classes are catered to what the members want to see, etc), and the longer classes. You could schedule 45 min classes every hour on Babbel Live, but you can't get a longer class, whereas WA offers 90 min. So yes, in my opinion Babbel is a better value for most people especially those who are open to working through the Babbel material, but there are people for whom WA would be a better service.

Are you taking into account currency exchange because 11 euros is a lot in Venezuela
@joreneelanguages
@joreneelanguages 9 дней назад
@@JazmineJessica Many of Lingoda’s teachers live in Europe. It was just an example of a platform taking what appears to be a very large profit margin. Edit: For clarity - it's ridiculous for a platform to be taking in $12-80 per group class and paying that low. I was describing one of the factors i look at when choosing classes - how much does a platform redistribute class fees to teachers. There are of course overhead costs, curriculum development, etc., but other platforms are certainly paying better even with lower student fees.

@@joreneelanguages I am really impressed at how objective you are. Even just knowing someone from say LingQ is going to just look at a video of me talking about them makes me automatically start filtering what I say about them.

Who are you to judge what's a fair wage in Venezuela? It's a strange hill to die on asking for Venezuelan teachers to make over 50% more than the US federal minimum wage when the exchange rate and cost of living there are ridiculous. All this while knowing absolutely nothing about their companies' overhead. A lot of them take these jobs because they can't find other work, so if raising wages meant raising the price and that meant fewer students and fewer teachers, I wonder if that would affect your opinion? italki would eat their lunch and people would lose their jobs - do you think they'd agree with you? With higher wages, many would also be displaced more better talent from high wage (higher cost of living) countries. What's funny is a lot of them take these jobs, gain experience and improve their equipment, then move over to private tutoring on sites like italki anyway. It's a self-correcting market.
@joreneelanguages
@joreneelanguages 9 дней назад
i stated that I look at italki rates from that country to get an idea of what a good hourly rate for teachers in that country is. I also discussed in my other video, but the cost of living in Venezuela is actually *not* that low, estimated minimum monthly cost of nearly $800 USD, one of the highest in Latin America. I personally when I pay for nonessential services where I have a choice where my money goes, like to make sure people are getting paid enough to live on. I am not targeting Worlds Across, I discussed teacher pay in my reviews of Babbel Live and Lingoda as well. it seems like WA is trying to combat super low pay and give people opportunities for advancement, which is great. But I don’t actually know how much they’re making, and I wanted to highlight that.

@@joreneelanguages I appreciate the reply. I think it's important to consider both sides of an argument before taking a stance. There's a high likeliness that we completely agree, but I stand by my other statements on unintended consequences - all things being equal (including pay), I think the vast majority of people will choose Mexican or Continental Spanish teachers over Venezuelans, and lots of Venezuelans would go from little income to no income at all. And as unfortunate as it is, if an ethically sourced iPhone were $1000 and one made at Foxcon under the current slave-like conditions were $800, 95%+ of the public would go with the cheaper one. I'll check out your other videos to further educate myself on the topic.

thanks! I do see your point and it isn’t something to take lightly, but unfortunately I don’t see a way for this “creating more jobs” mindset to not result in the same kind of race to the bottom that clothing production, electronic production, etc has done. At some point, the jobs aren’t good. Exactly where that point is is what I think we have to establish.
