Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad coal hoppers get unloaded at the former Bethlehem Steel Lackawanna, NY mill site, now the Gateway Metroport Port of Buffalo, with an old, chopped cab BSCX EMD SW1! Originating from the Lady Jane Mine in Penfield PA, the bituminous coal will be stockpile at the port and eventually loaded onto ships bound for Canada!

Great job Matty. I was just on the other side of the fourth windmill. That ship that was coming in out on the horizon went in to Lafarge. It was a busy Monday around Buffalo. You do a great job covering this operation. It's very cathartic. I could watch it all day long.

Most likely the dumper, the cab has been chopped longer than the "new" thaw shed has been standing.

What is the structure called that tips the hoppers? Where does the coal end up prior to the conveyor?

It's called a rotary dumper. It turns the cars upside down and dumps them into a pit below that the conveyor feeds out of.

Somebody help me understand what I am looking at. A big machine flips the whole car over and dumps out the coal? I guess I always figured it dumped out of the bottom somehow.

It's called a rotary dumper, and does exactly what you described.

Some cars can dump out of the bottom. Cars that are a part of large unit trains that deliver to power plants and such. It’s usually quicker to dump out of the bottom than a rotary dumper but neither operation is considered fast.

@@chriswoodruff2293 All depends on the type of unloader the receiving facility has; coal hoppers can't be bottom dumped at a rotary dumper. Also, this facility gets unit CSX coal trains which have nothing but BethGon coalporter cars, which don't bottom dump.

What is the long multi-tracked structure the cars are pushed through? Also the long white one?

The multi-tracked building is the old coal thaw shed back when this was the coke plant for Bethlehem Steel. The smaller white building, I believe, is the "new" thaw shed.
