You truly are an amazing musician!! I was born 1966 and have owned a guitar since 1973, however never learned to play until 2020. I love this instrument and love watching your channel. I like Marty's but you are the best!!

Especially after your Major Scale Super Highways video, I'm noticing these relationships between notes more and more. Maybe it's because I actually know what notes I'm on now!

The way you explain things makes so much sense, you truly are an outstanding teacher. If I'm curious enough I should be able to transpose this idea to chords and chord progressions, right? And understand why some chords create tension/resolve?

Another FANTASTIC video! I have gone from having a bias against music “theory” - to becoming a Curious Guitarist - to becoming simply Curious about Music because of this channel. “I’m not going to give you a fish - I’m GOING TO TEACH YOU TO FISH!”…. (those of you who have gone through most of Chris’s videos will recognize this analogy). Thanks Chris!

Can't believe how incredible you explain things, I'm still a beginner, 2-3 years but inconsistent with my practicing which keeps me from advancement; but wow I'm gettin what you're layin down, I have seen and listened to many teachers on here, and purchased courses( some courses I haven't even gotten to yet), but yeah you are the best!!! AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Chris, I am so over appreciative of your work. I been a guitarist for many years, (not always practicing, but long enough to have a good idea). Enough to be ashamed for not knowing, but yet enough to know what I don't know. That being said, I am free to express my most sincere thank you. Your perspectives are absolute magic to me. So, without me being a fan boy (I think I used that correctly), Thank You.

Sometimes I feel sorry for the natural minor scale because it has no leading tone. And sometimes I feel sorry for the major scale because it has no minor third.

Chris thanks for this great lesson. What are the three critical notes in the major pentatonic scale? You mentioned that of the minor pentatonic scale. Thanks.
@curiousguitarist
@curiousguitarist 2 года назад
In any scale, the relations you want to explore first are always how the various intervals relate back to the root. For BOTH pentatonic scales the road into really understanding their sonic signature are the notes that are on either side of the root. because THOSE notes define how it sounds to "come back home." Major pentatonic is: 2 Root 6 Minor pentatonic is: b7 Root b3 Hope this helps!

I am about to ask a question that might make me the laughing stock of the guitar community, but I’ll ask anyways…. In the key of A, you used the A note for the drone in the major/Ionian and minor/Dorian scale/mode; would the drone note change if you moved on to the other modes in that key??? (for example: C# is the drone for Phrygian mode in key of A) Bracing myself for the laughter that is heading my way 😂
@curiousguitarist
@curiousguitarist 3 года назад
Perfectly great question Donald! Modes are tricky at the very best, so hang on tight here.... The A drone note will work for any mode using A as the root. Like A major, or A dorian, or A phrygian...and on and on... But "in a key" gets tricky because the modes best express themselves with the new "assumed" root that the mode starts on. So in the "key" of A major, the only scale that works with the A drone is of course A major/Ionian. The minute you play A dorian over the droning A note, you've ACTUALLY changed keys to G major now. Hope that helps!! GREAT questions Donald! And lastly, I can't thank you enough for your support man! It means the world to me.

Thank you for clearing that up! As soon I read your answer it clicked. I just couldn’t come up it on my own at this stage of my learning process. Scale ? oh no The jig is up I am still trying to figure out what Number 3 is ,I am struggling to find it mostly from looking at each string and say okay g string second fret A 3 fret b fifth c so on.and for every string, then I forgot what the heck I was going. I am stilltrying to find that three not thing ,oh god that too. 0000 no ,need to take notes ,wait play cords count notes ,,,5.6,7,8 no wait thats dance class. yikes well I better watch a few more before practice. Oh I might have a new tenet ,that Music composer Director, choreographer , lyricist. she said ya you were right ,i need to learn new chords . but there are only 7 right? so it shouldn't take long...haha that's Chris you are so wonderful , and cute too. oops jen🦋
