By creating layers of colored and transparent oxides of various thicknesses which reflect different colors and shades of light due to the interference phenomenon. Diode lasers like this can only mark stainless steel. They can't mark other metals unless they're coated first. Different speed, power and interval settings will increase or decrease the heat applied to stainless steel to produce these oxides and various colors and shades. This also affects the corrosion resistance that other metals like nickel and chromium provide when mixed with steel to make stainless steel, so any marking on bare stainless steel that will be exposed to moisture should be protected with a clear finish after.

The owl took a few hours because some of the colour settings require low intervals and speed. The bike took around a half hour or so.

It's not difficult. If you can use a basic paint or image program to manipulate images or photos or you can create simple models in CAD then you can learn how to use the software and any of the machines that I feature on the channel. Some are more expensive than others for different reasons, every machine is slightly different from the other and they'll all take time to learn, but it's not as complicated as it seems at first. This machine is one of my favorites, I'd recommend it for beginners or pros.

By lightly scoring and oxidizing the surface. The colour depends on how much heat's concentrated in the steel. Increasing/decreasing power, speed and intervals will increase or decrease the amount of heat the laser generates and the steel will oxidize accordingly.

I've never tried the D1 but have other xTool engravers. Both are good brands, good quality products. Algolaser is a new company but it was started by the founder of Ortur - both Ortur and xTool were established in 2018 and maintain good reputations. I think the Delta is the better engraver just looking at the specs, but they're both priced accordingly with the Delta currently being a couple hundred $ more (Algo's kit includes a rotary, risers and some consumables while xTool's kit includes an enclosure and consumables). The Delta has a fiber-coupled diode module to amplify the laser so it can produce the same output with less power consumption, but machines of this size don't use a lot to begin with so you're not really saving much on the power bill unless you're running a few of them daily. It also has a smaller spot size for finer detail (0.05x0.06mm vs 0.08x0.1), a terminal display for easier offline engraving, a higher engraving speed (500mm/s vs 400mm/s), and larger work area (440x415 vs 430x390).

Ok, @JamesBiggar, I got my Delta & it's set up. I want to engrave a photo of my late family pet dog, Emily. What settings do I input on the LCD screen or on the phone app? I don't have a laptop.

Delta, for sure. Ortur's powerful, works fine. But the Delta has more features and the frame is a lot stronger/stiffer. Can't rack it out of square like the Ortur. Coming fully assembled helps a lot too.

Sorry, I should've been more specific. Alpha is a diode laser, Delta is a fiber-coupled diode laser which carries the beam through optical fiber to amplify it for better efficiency. Wavelength for both is the same. A fiber (only) laser doesn't use diodes and has a different wavelength for engraving different materials (specifically metals).

Thanks, that helps a lot. One more question, is the X axis (gantry) the 440mm dimension? Hoping they eventually sell an extension kit.

Yes, 440mm is the x axis dimension.

Do you know the frequency of the diode, trying to find it.@@JamesBiggar

you are wrong, Alpha and Delta 22 W have the same modules, they are the same. Only the machine is different.
