Excellent work Paul, and so awesome that you did this song, it is among the top three or four most underrated Straits tunes and one of my favourites. If you do another classic anytime soon my vote would be for Skateaway!!!

I was fortunate enough to attend a DS concert with its original 4 piece line-up. It was like witnessing a miracle. I came out trembling and have been fully addicted ever since. Of course, i had to rush out and buy a strat, and have struggled ever since to play even remotely close to MK, but now i think with these beautifully presented videos, i might be in with a chance. Im surprised I've not come across these before. Consider me subscribed.

Thanks a million Freddy. I first saw them just as Dave left and Hal & Alan joined - 12th Dec 1980. Loudest gig I ever went to! Highlight was "Where do you think you're going". Thanks for the sub!

Such a great song! Somehow it always sounded out of reach of my guitar playing skills but it is completely doable thanks to this lesson. Knopfler uses chord shapes a lot to easily play triads and harmonies. Once you start to recognize those patterns in his solos they start to make a lot more sense and you can understand why they sounds so good.

Brilliant. I'm glad that the video has helped. You are 100% spot on in what you say about chord shapes - you have absolutely found the key to unlock MKs style of playing. The sky's the limit! Enjoy. 👍👍

Great lesson Phil, love the rhythm on this song, it's so hypnotic, and i think i've got it nailed, just need to make it a bit more smoother, next will be to put it into my looper pedal that i haven't yet used and solo over it.

Great stuff Paul. I agree, the rhythm on this song is really lovely and the idea of the looper is brilliant - I did exactly the same when preparing for the video. Be ready to lose a few hours of your day.... It's very addictive. 👍👍

Great lesson Phil. Would love a lesson like this on Wild West End if you were up for it. There are a few channels available that show the rhythm but none that teach the lead.

Great idea Simon. I'll get it on the list to do soon. I was lucky enough to see Wild West End played by DS in 1980 as an encore to a brilliant gig in Lancaster - I was 15 and it has had a profound impact on my life. What a man MK is.

Thank you Phil!! Love this song but never liked the way I played it, I've always used to bar with my index in the verse and the sliding was sloppy now I can get it right.

Wonderful video thank you! And wonderful song choice, as you said, "quintessential" early Dire Straits.

Thanks Phil! This has really improved my playing of this song Quick question- it sounds like you have a little delay effect when you play,. how do you set that?
@philcaffrey
@philcaffrey Месяц назад
Hi Jamey - that's great news. Every little helps as they say. Re the delay, great spot. I always have a bit of delay on my guitar to fill it out. I have the delay set at somewhere between 250 and 500ms depending on taste/type of song/music I'm playing, feedback/repeats are set so I get maybe 3 or 4 audible repeats and then the whole thing goes quite low in the mix. As I say, I use it for body (a little bit like an extra reverb or even instead of reverb) rather than having it very overt like Dave Gilmour or The Edge. It's worth playing around with settings. My general view is that as soon as you start noticing it, there is too much - it should almost be subliminal if you get my drift. Hope that helps.
