This is a big one, and I don't hear a lot about it. Few of my fellow engineers approach their artists this way. Currently working with an artist who struggles to truly perform behind the mic - all closed off and quiet. Difficult to establish that emotional headspace when you're not actually performing on stage for thousands of people. I've found that showing him videos of artists giving powerful and emotional performances while being relatively motionless and tucked away behind a mic is helpful. Most of that emotion comes through in their facial expressions. A video that comes to mind is Sarah Cothran's cover of "As The World Caves In". Great topic, ty!!

If you want to be a music producer, hold on to your hats - because you'll be wearing a lot of them. When I first began my endeavour, I found a great school. I went for the full-blown 2-year Liberal Arts degree. In my first semester of Studio Techniques, the professor gave a full day's lecture on the importance of psychology - going through much of what Colt has expounded upon. I immediately signed up for 2 semesters of Psychology - Basic Psychology, and Human Development. So much wisdom. Thank you, Colt for this teaching.

“I wonder what it would sound like” is one I’m ALWAYS using. A couple of things I might add to this: having a workflow that allows for an artist to track, and then hear a fairly good sounding playback by the time they come into the control room really helps to keep everyone positive and excited. (I.e. drum buss compression, vocal fx, maybe a little mix buss brightness) And on the communication thing, communicating everything you can via text or email really can come in handy to absolve you of any accusations of miscommunication.

As an Architect I have seen the same. I am the design professional being hired and paid to do this and produce a product. But I don't actually own the building in the end. I have standard I must follow, and there is more to it. But the after I am done with the drawing and the building is up. I walk away and the owner has a live with the result.

100% dead on ! .. its really easy as engineers / studio owners and the such, as we techies conquer our own path we may lose objectivity in the final fact that its the artist's name big on the front cover and ours but a footnote on the back credits. great advice and insight. nothing will lose you a client faster than our own ego.

Colt, I'm working with a singer who refuses to approach harmonies. In context, he is Jamaican and can't afford much studio time, so he focusses on his lead vocal but is unwilling to pay for support vocal time. If one sees the situation, its understandable. How can I get him to accept the benefits of doing his own double track/harmony/ backing vocals. He wants to succeed yet is being a little unyielding... any ideas ideas on how I can coax him round?

Not a producer, definitely not an engineer. Just a boneheaded guitarist trying to get some music down with some friends. THANK YOU for the singer tips. Thats exactly what i'm dealing with. Singer has great parts, but lacking truly powerful delivery. I'm going to try this tip next practice.

The first three songs on your playlist of songs you've worked on sound almost identical... Crappy auto-tuned country music. I went further down the list and nothing stuck out to me as anything special. I love the channel and I'm happy for your success but unfortunately the success came from mixing and mastering mediocre mainstream music.

I think you still have the definitions confused. One studies the mind and behaviour, the other is a doctor who tries to fix mental health.

Psychiatrist is a medical doctor with a specialization in psychiatry, so they can prescribe drugs,. A psychologist can't. Both will do psychotherapy, which means listening and helping patients with their mental health issues. Of course in the modern world issues are sometimes fixed with "cost effective" solutions, meaning some psychiatrists are forced to skip the therapy part, and just prescribe drugs, but that's not really how it's supposed to be.

Yeah, we don't really need gear porn. Most of it is stuff that I would bet most of us can't afford anyway. I too prefer the one's where he just talks. There is a lot of wisdom in that man, and that's coming from a guy old enough to be his father, maybe grandfather!
