Our older homes are not energy efficient. They can be freezing cold in winter and unbearably hot in summer.
Join us as we step inside a renovated World War II bungalow to uncover the simple tips you can use to make your home more comfortable, sustainable and budget-friendly.
Discover how CSIRO research is tackling home energy efficiency from every angle: www.csiro.au/e...
Here's a checklist for your house:
1. Encourage air flow and cross-ventilation.
2. Use blinds and window coverings to keep rooms cool in summer and trap heat in winter.
3. Install insulation.
4. Find and fix gaps that cause draughts.
5. Use weather sealing on doors and windows.
6. Choose appliances with the highest star ratings within your needs and budget.

To he honest, this is a pretty small list of things that can be done to make houses more energy efficient. What is the best type of air conditioner to use in summer? What is the best way to heat a home in winter? Plant shade trees to provide summer shade and block winter winds. Paint your roof white if you live in a warm or hot climate (thanks sarcasmo57) or paint it black if you live in a cold climate like Hobart. No mention of under-floor or wall insulation? Not sure why. And cross-ventilation is something you must consider at the home design stage but you can retrofit windows and other openings to cool a house down in summer.

Please discuss the newer estates; Urban Heat Islands with no room for vegetation, dark tiled roofs, houses enveloping the entire block, poor construction and non-compliant homes, and plastic grass everywhere.

And solid fences that block any breeze And bushland bulldozed . And retic front lawns that leak drinking water onto the road. Plus high debt for decades with children who never play outside and are reared in Kindergarten.

Ordered a solid door to the south with draught excluders & seal fitted. Sealing around window & would like to get double or triple glazing also for traffic noise. Seal around windows & possibly install curtains over the blinds to the south. Have already installed new insulation with light roof & anticon as well as the bats & whirlbirds in the ceiling plus solar panels. Verandahs to Noth & south with louvre windows to the north west & north east. Would like to plant trees to the west but there are telegraph lines so could instal a vertical garden wall. Pergola to the north can have deciduous plantings. Have planted fruit trees.

Why more power in Dec post reno...? when before it was less.? As in : pre reno Dec was a drop from pre reno Nov. and Post Reno Dec is a massive rise from the prior post reno months, nearly up to the levels of pre reno.

@@ArjayMartin It is possible they had a heat wave that December Post Reno but not pre Reno, it was still lower than Pre Reno

@@julienilsson8781 What is the evidence of that though. "It is possible" the post Reno they were at home less, and it was cooler, than the previous year too... that's a risk of non controlled 'anecdotal' evidence.
