I remember when I first learned this from you. I spent at least a week doing just this drill until it was second nature. It really is as you said, “the gateway” to most of his greatest licks. I first perfected it without the amp turned on. After getting it down and really getting that “bouncy” feel to it, I turned on the 64 Deluxe Reverb and it was so much easier and fluid. I know I’ve said it before, but you give more to the student than anyone in the business does! Good on you! John.

Thank you for these box lessons. They have helped my phrasing big time! I have always been bogged down with full on scales. The Albert King box is money. I have been targeting the ending notes you’ve recommended. I sound much better. I have been using basic 1 4 5 type progressions. My question is, what should I target when there are 4 or more chords? Should I target those as well? Sometimes it’s hard to remember the chords/root notes as these jam tracks I practice with expand. I hope I’ve detailed my question clearly enough. Thanks for all you do.

That is an "aha" moment! I used to try to pick every note. Never thought you need to "cheat" being fast with hammer on and pull offs.
@jagapatto

Most of his stuff is on Stevie Ray Vaughan's work. SRV tuned down one half step so it wouldn't make sense to use standard tuning and try to play with a backing track or CD of SRV. It is a huge pain to switch back and forth between tunings if you're using a strat. If I go on a SRV binge, I usually tune one of my guitars down and just leave it that way. If I want to use a regular-tuned guitar, I'll use a different one.
@Texasbluesalley
@Texasbluesalley 13 лет назад
@sysphus13 I initially started doing it because I read that Stevie did, but there's a lot of practical reasons that I prefer it now. One reason is that the pick gets hung up in the strings more with the pointy end, both for regular picking and faster 'fan' picking (where I use the flat, back side of the pick).
@jadm110
@jadm110 3 года назад
so you don't prefer the pointy picks for playing?

I have been playing alot of srv the past couple months and when this I play style lick I alternate between using my ring and middle finger to do the bend on the g string. Do you think that I should try only using my middle like you do or should I do what's comfortable? Also when doing the hammer on the b string sometimes I hit the e string in the process, do you have any tips for eliminating that problem or it it just a practice makes perfect thing?

Excellent trick in the bag ! Is it the angle or is your action set pretty high ? I can't get the hammer on to sound anywhere near the same volume as the other notes. If at all. I think my action is too low. Thoughts ?

When I bend my middle and ring fingers hit the D string and makes a sound, is there anyway I can mute it? Seems to be my only issue

@brianabadia1983 not nessarily, i usually use dunlop jazz 3s which are small picks so when someone hands me a regular pick now i usually use the side of it beacause i find it easier to pick faster and use my other fingers, but its all prefrence

@Pollutens
@Pollutens 13 лет назад
This is a great exercise but speed is also in the head, not only in the hands, you have to think music fast and as a guitarrist i think the problem is not in the hands, because the hands will make you play what you have in your head and that isn't as trainable but still, this as you say unlocks a lot of licks :)
@Pollutens
@Pollutens 13 лет назад
@kortt That's cuase blues comes from the inside, you cant just learn it from a tab book and jam along, you have to feel it, you have to know what note comes next and what u have to express, blues is like speaking english, you know what word or lick comes next cause u know what ur going to say. That is the main difference between blues and any other style :) peace bros

It was first played in a song called “The Caveman Blues” in 1500 BC by an Egyptian cover band. Or so I have been told.
@sysphus13

I notice you use the circular side of the pick too...is that a stevie thing, or just something you do?
@kortt
@kortt 13 лет назад
@Pollutens Don't know about that, you may be right. But, I know guitarist who can play wicked fast as long as it's something they've learned from a tab book. They can't improvise because they haven't trained themselves to think musically. My son in law can play Metallica all day long, but ask him to jam to freeform blues and he's lost.

How do I prevent my ring finger from going under the d string while pulling off the g string bend?
@Texasbluesalley
@Texasbluesalley 5 лет назад
The action on your D string might be a little too high if that's happening. Bring it down a little bit at a time until it catches on your fingertip while bending.

@Pollutens yeah, but you cant play what you hear or think in your head if you dont have the necessary strength in your fingers. You need to learn to hear and think musically with your head but you need to train your fingers in order to follow your musical ideas.

That's cool, but on that 4. note, wouldn't it be easier to upstroke it? Like a 3 down's and then on the B string one up... It's easier for me that way. 'cos if I don't do it that way, when i'm coming back to repeat the lick, my pick always hit's that B string and it sounds like a mess. Anyway, that's just me. Great lessons by the way. :)
