Fascinating. Absolutely fascinating. Such a gift to have this beautiful complex music broken down into language that I as a jazzy/intermediate pianist can understand. Thank you so much for making this. Love your channel.

Your presentation of Chopin's bio is exemplary short. Of course there is much more as there is for any other composer. Chopin himself said his preludes were mere scriblings as compared to Well-Tempered Clavier, of which he could play 17 preludes and fugues by heart later in his life, says students, quoted in Eigeldingers book, "Chopin: pianist and teacher - as seen by his pupils". Chopin utilized the free-form nature of the prelude - (prelude meaning opening music, introduction), and that form inspired J.S.Bach to some of his most mood-carrying pieces, like the Eb minor prelude, or the C# minor prelude. Bach's preludes were also played and copied as standalone pieces in the "Notenbuch for Wilhelm Friedemann", a book for his oldest son, which book had been copied by so many musicians during the years until around 1790 where new music began to dominate. While Bach’s preludes often stand alone, in the Well-Tempered Clavier, each is traditionally followed by a fugue. Though Bach’s fugues are expressive, their compositional technique sometimes casts them as mere continuations of his stylistic norms. Chopin, on the other hand, brought remarkable expression and diversity to his Preludes. It’s noted in Eigeldinger's book that Chopin enjoyed creating musical parodies that reflected the personalities of his friends and acquaintances. This insight transforms how one might hear each prelude-as if portraying a distinct character. For example, the A minor Prelude might conjure an image of a friend with a troubled gait, colored by pain or a naturally somber demeanor.

Sir, I wonder if you are familiar with the composer and pianist Alkan? A contemporary of Chopin, perhaps he is too obscure but would you consider examinening his piece, Song of the Mad Woman by the Seashore? Woderful lesson here! Cheers

Alkan! Yes, I am familiar with the works of Alkan. Like Chopin, his musical output was centered almost exclusively on the piano. I find him fascinating (and frustrating, since much of his piano music is somewhat beyond my technical capabilities!). However, Song of the Mad Woman by the Seashore (La chanson de la folle au bord de la mer) is playable by most amateur pianists. I will keep this haunting piece in mind for future examination. Thank you for your comment.
