The key questions being addressed by this research are what technologies and procedures must be emplaced or developed to sustain routine state or commercial operations beyond the limitations imposed by Part 107. While this question is broad in nature, it can be roughly broken into technical and procedural elements and their interactions to ensure a traceable level of safety for operations in complex and changing environments. On the technical front, existing ATM systems generally do not track very low altitude operations outside of terminal operation areas surrounding controlled airspace. Therefore, several sensing technologies were explored to provide situational awareness and tactical/strategic deconfliction between UAS and crewed aircraft operations.
