The phenomenon dubbed "Midday horror" or "horror of noon" was presumably first described on Russian imageboards. Anons, and later on many more users all over the web, noticed that certain similarly-themed pictures and paintings somehow make them feel anxious. For no apparent reason, images of a seemingly regular sunny day don't evoke a feeling of happiness or relaxation. Is this familiar to you?
The birds suddenly go quiet. You look around and all you see is the blinding light of the merciless sun draining everything of moisture. The air trembles. All you feel is the relentless heat and... Fear. You are alone out here. Or are you? In any case, it's certainly DANGEROUS to be here right now. The limbic system remembers and knows exactly why.
Of course, this isn't a newly discovered experience. Ancient Slavs believed in a spirit called Poludnitsa (or Poludnica/Polednice/Pripoldnica/.., i.e. Lady Midday). The noon demon had all the fields in her grasp when the sun was high overhead. She would inflict headaches and illusions, snatch children and drain souls.
If you come from a Western culture, you can also check out the works of Andrew Wyeth, Edward Hopper and Jose Manuel Capuletti. This montage features photos depicting scorching hot scapes of Russia & neighbouring countries, and also some paintings from artists of Slavic/Soviet origin.
