UK trained family Doc here. The number of obstacles for us to move to Canada are staggering!! The costs for applying for a licence and then paying for our credentials to be verified is ridiculous!
Pay family doctors more per appointment. Get the government moving on licensing doctors trained abroad especially in places like US, UK, EU and Australia. More nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
These remote areas aren’t even the only areas now….even Kingston is at a crisis level now. We have ONE legit walk in clinic. One. My doctor is retiring by the end of this year so I’m in a crappy spot by Dec 2023 😢
The reason there are not enough family doctors in Ontario is because although Ontario medical schools each receive over 3000 applications per year, they each only let in a little over 100 people. There are so many empty spots for family medicine. There are SO many highly intelligent and competent Canadian applicants who get rejected and then go and become doctors in the United States and in Europe. Every time I see one of these “news” pieces I am shocked by the bullshit and the lies
Primary care is the key to preventing many illnesses, disorders, diseases and conditions. We are now putting so much pressure on our hospitals 😔 We need to make it easier for Canadian born doctors who train in other Commonwealth countries (UK, Australia, etc.) to return and set up shop in their birth country. The training they receive in these countries are on par to Canadian institutions. This all goes back to an intertwined system which includes our Universities. These Unis are also focusing on accepting foreign students over Canadian students because they make more money…when these student graduate, they leave 😡this is bullshit. Look at how many primary care residencies go unfulfilled each year in Ontario….many Canadian trained students don’t even choose primary care anymore! why can’t these spots be filled by Canadian students who trained overseas or other internationally trained students?? Why???
Decision some 3 decades allowing our public health care providers to pick ND and chose patients has undermind 'Universl' and grown the problem of those going without family physician. No amount of GPs will change that complicated patients are big proportion without GP
Canada is 30 years behind USA- heard that from one of the doctors who practised in both countries. Personally, I haven’t seen a doctor in 10 years. Cannot find one :(.
The U.S. does NOT have a quality health care system; it is LAST among the developed nations on most key measures. Even those who are more well off have to battle insurance companies. It's an extremely disorganized non-system. Many in the U.S. also can find a doctor. The doctor you've interacted with must be in a large city; and clearly not in a rural area.
