You're in the studio and at the mixing console with Motown historian Harry Weinger and Questlove of The Roots as they unpack classic tracks including Marvin Gaye’s 1971 chart-topper “What’s Going On” and The Supremes' 1966 hit "You Can't Hurry Love."

Oh my GOD, Marvin's falsetto is soooooooo clean! Just when I think these legends can't get any better than what I already envision them as.

Quest love : I feel that this was orchestrated in the depth of winter . Harry : knocked together in the middle of July .

I think Quest would be surprised by how vibrant Detroit was back then - anybody that wanted a steady job could get one. The factories and machine shops couldn’t build fast enough. Times were good. But still, racism was definitely an issue. But it was the greatest expansion of wealth and prosperity - for all races - the world had ever seen. The fact that Marvin could make, and release, this record was one of the signs that progress was being made. Detroit is now a faded flower but it was quite a thing to behold for a time. So many memories….

I didn’t know the art of Marvin until a few months ago, and it totally smash my soul like a thunder. After the dance, I want you, and Soon I’ll be loving you again are my lifetime soundtrack nowadays. Feel Marvin like my brother.

As a native Detroiter and musician,, I greatly approve. I only wish it the individual tracks were available to download. How cool would that be if you could put these tracks in your DAW and mix them yourself? I’d never leave the studio.

The female vocals are the Andantes on the backgrounds. The single version of "God is Love" is gorgeous. My favorite Marvin Gaye tune.

Early Motown sessions were bananas. They were banging out 3 iconic tunes in one session. Who does that? On the WGO album David Van de PetIt* (the arranger) was a bass player! He was flabbergasted by James Jamersons understanding of the bass. The two of them banged out the bass arrangement together. All written! (James was a master sight reader). They had a mutual admiration type of relationship. David reverently sought the advice of James. (Should it go like this?) Jamerson was flattered that the show runner wouldn’t make a bass move without his approval. If you listen, no musician had the dominant role like Jamerson. The rest of the band was like ambient ear candy. Drums and all. Distant guitar. Non prominent piano. Bunch of toys. And Jamerson upfront dead center carrying everybody. Every note painstakingly written . A kind of ghostly feel to the whole piece. Ending with a mellotron and china cymbals. Da duh da duh da da duh da daaaaa Auhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. “Jaw drop” by the end of side one. Nobody said a word! Other worldly feeling. “What the hell was that?” It completely changed the atmosphere in the room. (Nobody played side 2 lol. Well almost nobody.) After mercy me the record player went back to the beginning. In a house full of people frying fish and drinking like wales. WGO became a cultural lifestyle in the homes of what…. 90% of black people? It was a listening album. You talked while the whole side A played. The albums topics generated constant conversation. Unconsciously. The album lived right where we were. Completely in the moment. It all comes back when I hear it.

Yes, unconventional, Marvin Gaye was a musical genius, and this is a masterpiece just like something from Beethoven, or Mozart.

Why sis this take place with Quest ? why not someone who plays more than drum, perhaps a singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist ?? Not Quest I'm sorry

Quest is a record producer. I’d say he’s eminently qualified. A good producer just needs to have good taste. S/he doesn’t need to be a musician at all.

Marvin didn’t want a motown drummer? What the hell does that mean? All of the motown drumming is pretty undefined.

Can we leave perfection alone!!! no need to dissect it if you can't duplicate it!! AND JUST ENJOY THE MUSIC ! that was Mr Gaye's purpose of doing it!! you can't duplicate another person's genius! it's like you looking for flaws!! Marvin has none! check his sales against yours! find your own fame! so someone may want to dissect your artistry!! and again i would say! what's the point! Leave M.r Gaye's music alone!! i remember when rapper shaggy did a song called ! bombastic...with MG'S lets get it on track! i went into a shoe store where two young brother's / shoe salesmen...heard it playing over store sound system...they were pissed! they were saying why did he do that!! basically saying ! don't mess with the Master's music! it's not to be degraded like that! i was older ..and it made think ..the younger generation has much respect for musical genius! i felt very hopeful!! if you want to dissect something /music ..do it to artist who never made it! something young artist can learn what not to do!! DAYUMMMM!!
