The gmk Godzilla suit looks like trash But the figures and promotional designs are fire in my opinion, one of my favorites I think it would have looked cooler if the suit didn’t look so.... bad quality (Also sometimes in the movie they forget to add camera shake when the kaiju are stomping around)
Agreed about Shinji Higuchi. He deserves more praise from western fans that he's given credit for. Everyone gives praise to Anno for Shin, but Shinji had just as big of hand in directing. Sure he didn't write or edit it, but his effects and direction are there.
Here are some of my unpopular/random opinions: •Godzilla (1954) definitely deserves all of the praise it gets, but it's not necessarily a perfect film. My biggest issue with it (which is also pretty minor) is the pacing; there are some chunks in the film that do feel slow, but it doesn't prevent me from enjoying the film. •Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) does not ruin the essence of the original uncut Japanese version, it's just not as effective. •Both Ebirah, Horror of the Deep and Son of Godzilla are a bit underrated and often overlooked as they both have some of the most fun human casts, and the island setting is a nice break from the usually city setting. •As good as Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla is, I feel that Terror of MechaGodzilla is superior, and deserves to be ranked as one of the best Godzilla films for its drama and dark tone, all supported by the outstanding special effects. (I'm sure many can agree on this one) •Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante are the only entries in the Heisei Continuity from 1984 to 1995 that are genuinely very good, showcasing some of the best storytelling and effects in the series. •Godzilla 2000: Millennium is another that's overlooked, as it is a nice revival of the alien invader plot from the Showa series with Orga being a very interesting kaiju due to his design and origins. •I feel like GMK is only highly praised for its over-the-top monster action rather than Shusuke Kaneko's influence and storytelling in the film. (I think this can apply to other films) And that's all I got for now.
I share your opinion of Godzilla (1954) and, on rewatch, am convinced that the problem was its editing. IMO that informs why some scenes kill the pace of the movie. And I remember Terror of Mechagodzilla similarly. It's a shame that, just bc it was a box office bomb, it is poorly remembered in posterity. I think it's the same reason Godzilla vs. Biollante gets a bad rap. It has some awkward, campy charm. But it does two things: (1) it executes 1984's mission statement by casting Godzilla in a realistic political universe; and (2) explores compelling sci-fi themes that were at the core of 1993's Jurassic Park. Namely, that modern science still renders nature unpredictable and dangerous. Speaking of bad editing, Godzilla (1984) is schizophrenically uneven except in one area -- the editing is very, very bad in the Japanese version. The American version is actually edited better, but that's not saying much. There is even one scene in the American edited that's randomly thrown in just before Godzilla makes land. I remember, when I was a kid, I once asked, "But wasn't Kenny on Oshima Island?" Speaking of bad box office records, I agree with your opinion of Godzilla 2000. The movie just got a bad rap bc it underperformed in the US and critics get confused by Godzilla movies. And Oruga gets ignored bc it was not heavily marketed by Toho.
Unpopular opinion: The anime trilogy’s idea of giving the Godzilla franchises a chance to be more philosophical and thematically rich with its themes deserves way, *_way_* more respect. I’m not saying they’re masterpieces, nor am I saying Godzilla films haven’t had strong themes in the past, ( hence the original and Shin Godzilla). But, the anime films did attempt to further elaborate on older themes by focusing on humanity’s condition not on it’s hubris. Could’ve been executed way better though. (P.S, sorry for making you read so much.)
@@ultrae4628 I don't know why I feel that way, it's just I don't like the anime movies. City on Edge of Battle tried to do something different with Mechagodzilla but he didn't do anything and then just gets blown up by Godzilla. I cannot say the same for Ghidorah as they built up suspense and horror for his arrival. Plus I like how Metphies became the villian. Even though the fight between Godzilla and Ghidorah was mediocre, everything else seemed good. If you couldn't tell, The Planet Eater is my favorite of the 3.
-I like chubby Godzillas -KingGoji 1962 suit is the best Showa Godzilla design -The design changes to the Monsterverse Godzilla weren't necessary -As far as unmade monsters go Bagan is overamphasized -Shin Godzilla is great in terms of cinematography, effects, message, realistic military depiction but Godzilla is too alien-like -Toho should make a new Godzilla roar I like the changes made to the monsters in the anime trilogy -If Toho or Legendary decide to bring back aliens they should redesign them to be less human-like -I like Little Godzilla from GvsSG -SpaceGodzilla should get a more original design -I like when Kaiju are portrayed as believable (not the same as realistic) -Toho needs new monsters -Godzilla vs Kong is a bad idea mostly because of our mammal/human bias.
I totally agree with most of these! Lol with son of Godzilla's design! It's like why couldn't they have designed Minya to look more like his father then the other way around? XD
Interesting how neither Who Will Know or Persecution of the Masses made it onto your list of favourite Godzilla songs. Those are definitely two of mine. Both in my top 10 for sure.
Not gonna lie the suit design scared the shit out of me as a 4 year old watching Son of Godzilla for the first time lmao. I look back on that film now as one of favorites, IMO Showa Era had the best films overall. I love a few of the Heisei/Millenium films but Showa edges them out for me at least
Agreed on many points. Here's some of my opinions. (2021 Edit) 1. The existence of the son of Godzilla never made sense to me (both Minilla and Junior) Where did he come from? Just the idea of there being multiple Godzillas only made sense in the context of the Kiryu saga as they had more of a narrative purpose. However, that brings up more questions than answers. Why haven't other Godzillas appeared outside of Japan? How come when the first Godzilla dies, another takes its place almost immediately? I personally feel there should only be one Godzilla. 2. The Ultraman franchise gets too outlandish for it's own good. It panders more to children these days and I feel Tsuburaya Productions has been playing it safe for the past 10 years. They exist to sell toys. Transformation devices, monster cards, and form-changing. 3. Spacegodzilla and Destoroyah are the most overrated Godzilla enemies ever. One of them is just a near identical clone. They're mindless brutes who are evil with no rhyme or reason. Sure, they have emotionally affected Godzilla's morale, but it's not enough. 4. The Monsterverse in its current form is not a cinematic universe. Currently it's two Godzilla movies, a Kong movie, and an upcoming crossover. Future entries in the series centered around other flagship monsters have not been planned or greenlit. I blame Legendary/Warner Bros. executives and the marketing team for the use of the name "Monsterverse". At least Marvel and Disney were subtle about the MCU during phase 1, and even phase 2 to a degree.
1. I'm not as in love with the Heisei films as other Godzilla fans. Part of it is nostalgia since I grew up watching the millenium series and the showa era. That and I wasn't the biggest fan of the design from the heisei era. His mouth looked to feline for my taste and he looked very fat with cellulite rather than intimidating. 2. I think Godzilla 2000 deserves more respect. Part of that is nostalgia but another part is that it is a well done monster flick and I love the design of Godzilla in that film especially the spikes being shaped like flames. The human characters are pretty interesting and I felt like it was a good combination of Showa and Heisei. You have some comedy from the Showa and some harder sci fi from the Heisei. 3. I think some fans obsess over the Heisei Gamera films over a perceived seriousness rather than them being good. Don't get me wrong they are genuinely good films. But it always seemed like people praised it being serious in contrast to the more goofy Showa films. I think there's room for both in the Gamera movies. This could apply to Godzilla and other kaiju films in general. It feels like people want it to be super serious when you can have room for both serious and goofy films.
Alright here's my unpopular opinions -i don't hate any godzilla kaiju the only ones I truly hate are the polygon trilogy monsters -the polygon trilogy is worse than Zilla 1998 and Godzilla's Revenge -the only movies I consider objectively great in the franchise are Gojira and GvD -the reiwa movies aren't smart, experimental, bold, and great they are infact unoriginal -being different doesn't make your godzilla film good -america hasn't made a good godzilla film -tone doesn't equal quality -the "serious godzilla good silly godzilla bad" are worst types of godzilla fans -GMK could've been a third objectively great movie if it had angirous and varan as it originally wanted to -saying that the 1998 movie is a reason why the millennium series exist doesn't excuse the 1998 movie from being bad -the heisei era is objectively the best godzilla era -G14 fanboys are annoying -the pacific rim franchise is bad
More unpopular opinions 8months later!! 1. Ghidorah was well portrayed in KOTM, but could have been designed more extravagantly. In other words, there needed to be more emphasis on his alien origins. (I.e. multiple eyes, manes, less scaly skin, etc.) 2. The King Kong Godzilla debate us overblown. They really were never meant to share the screen together, as interesting as the concept may be. 3. Mothra needs to get her own films again, and stick to being female. Mothra Leo was cool at first, but he got a bit outlandish. Other than that, Mothra was always a feminine icon.
Pretty much agreed with everything you said, but I think the comment about Godzilla changing and how he doesn’t always need to be the exact same rings true as long as the movie around it is decent. Anyways, unpopular opinion is I think prior to KOTM, Ghidorah’s role and importance in the franchise is massively over rated. In his own first outing film he doesn’t leave much impact other then a giant space flea from nowhere and consequent films turned him into a jobber. For being a supposedly world ending monster, he only has two brief destruction scenes in the showa series. It always feels like there should have been more build up, and that Ghidorah should’ve fought Godzilla solo more to demonstrate how supposedly powerful he is. A weak monster doesn’t mean a bad film, I just don’t think Ghidorah’s role in a film as an antagonist to Godzilla has ever been properly executed. KOTM will most likely change that.
Here are some of my unpopular opinions. 1.I don't hate Godzillas design from Son of Godzilla 2.I don't care for Destroyah 3.Gorosaurus is a great monster
I am a lifelong Godzilla fan but I do think my overall opinions regarding the franchise would be unpopular among the fandom. 1.) Goji 1954 is a boring film, even by the standards of the era. 2.) The Showa series doesn't hold up very well, with a few notable exceptions. 3.) Return of Godzilla is not a good film. 4.) The last 3 films of the Heisei Series are its best and most enjoyable. 5.) Godzilla Final Wars is one of the best films of the series. 6.) Shin Godzilla is objectively the best Godzilla film. 7.) American Godzilla films are illegitimate. BONUS: Godzilla is my favorite character, but Heisei Gamera is the best kaiju film series.
Most of those opinions are what the fandom thinks. The fans don't like Return of Godzilla and the Showa era is normally refered to the worst era. And people praise Final wars.
I personally think ghidorah is a terrible rival to godzilla as he has never defeated godzilla once and his only known victory is likely to come from the new movie.
Nice video! Here’s some of my random yet personal opinions: - Most of The Showa Godzilla movies haven’t aged well. Yet they still have their charm. Plus it’s my favorite era of Godzilla. - The Monsterverse as a whole is mediocre and overrated. I don’t hate it but it lacks the moral of what made Godzilla great in the first place. Also Godzilla (2014) and KOTM are underrated while Kong: Skull Island and GvK are overrated. - Godzilla SP wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either. It was average at best. - King Kong vs. Godzilla/Godzilla vs. Kong is a terrible concept. Both Godzilla and Kong are too different in TONE and CHARACTER to do a crossover. Plus they work better in their own universes not to mention our Mammal/Human bias. - Some of the Showa Gamera films are better than most of the Showa Godzilla films. Even though some Showa Gamera films are bad if not terrible. - The Heisei Gamera Trilogy is overrated. I still love these movies and are better than the Heisei Godzilla movies. However they are too heavy over praised and not in a bad way. - The Heisei Godzilla is the best version of the character so far. Plus it’s the era where the character was at his peak. - Godzilla Final Wars is my favorite Godzilla movie. And it’s not bad as most people think. - GMK is overrated. I still love the movie but it’s over praised by fans for its visuals and story. Plus Ghidorah works better as a villain than a hero. - King Ghidorah, Mothra and Mecha-Godzilla are overused and EXTREMELY overrated. Toho should use more of their other Kaiju. - Hollywood can’t get Godzilla right. Since they only know the basic concept and not the core concept of the character. - Godzilla 2000 is underrated and overlooked. - The Reiwa Era of Godzilla is interesting but it’s lacking. Toho still holds the characters back. Plus the overuse of Shin Godzilla’s success into every entry is tiresome. That’s all I got at the moment.
1. Agreed. I don't actually mind the designs but _Son Of Godzilla_ is such a good film. 2. I'm cool with that. 3. Finally, some respect for the trash monster. Easily up there with Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla as Godzilla's most iconic and deadly enemies. 4. True. 5. hmmmm. Controversial, but I see what you mean.
I don’t think of these are unpopular, because godzilla has so many divided opinions that having unpopular opinions is meaningless. Also been meaning to say this for your vids, but word of advice I think in your videos you should try to sound a lot less monotone, it’d make your delivery sound less robotic and less awkward. Not really unpopular, but I do have some random opinions - Gunhed should be brought back in a godzilla movie, that way toho can make use of it and make a new redesign for it. - Out of the composers that weren’t ifukube, Kow Otani was easily the best when you look at what he’s done in other works like in Gundam Wing, Outlaw star, Shadow of the colossus, sengoku basara, etc. hattori is solid, but I mainly think he peaked with nadesico than godzilla. Emerson is probably a close 2nd given he did genma taisen’s music. - If there is a new godzilla film, they should get Kenji Kawai or Toshihiko Sahashi to do the music scores. Given their backgrounds in what they’ve done, their style would work perfectfly for a godzilla film. - If there is another godzilla anime, they should get someone like Jun Kawagoe to direct it and probably give it to a studio who can do it in 2D animation, if it also has any godzilla mechs then get Kawamori, Izubuchi or even Ebikawa to design them.
Heres mine: • I think that Final Wars is an improvement over Destroy all Monsters. • I think the Monsterverse went downhill after Kong Skull Island. • Neon Genesis Evangelion gets too much hate from Godzilla fans and is very underrated. • Godzilla vs. Megalon is not a good movie however it is the best Godzilla film from an entertainment viewpoint. • Godzilla 84 is the best of the Heisei series. • Rebirth of Mothra 3 is my favourite non Godzilla kaiju film. (Not show though that goes to Evangelion)
I agree, I actually enjoy Godzilla Raids Again. I understand it's not as great as it's predecessor but I still enjoy it, and I actually like the suits. Still my favorite Anguirus design.
Sousa: Says G:KOTM is a mediocre piece of crap. Also Sousa: Says the most boring Godzilla movie is good. I respect your opinion but that is just odd to me.
While unpopular, I find myself agreeing with you on all points. Especially regarding Son of Godzilla. I see people tout that film as one of the worst in the franchise based on nothing more than it being too cute and kiddie. Despite the designs, the human characters are fun and lovable and the ending is one of the most emotionally touching moments of the franchise, bar none. As for an unpopular opinion on my end? Godzilla PS4 is the best Godzilla video game. I enjoy it far more than any of the pipeworks games because it truly felt like a Godzilla movie as a game and the attention to detail and accuracy for each monster was fantastic. The pipeworks games were fun, but I can't help but find myself getting irritated by inaccurate beam colors and roars.
I never stopped watching any Godzilla film. Good or bad, there will always be something about a dude in a suit destroying a miniature, and fighting other dude's in suits while destroying a miniature. Plus, Godzilla in general was my introduction into Japanese film, food, music, and culture. I love Japan because of Godzilla. So, I ignore whatever feedback, I'm that guy that can sit through All Monsters Attack, and the other unpopular Showa series films.
Thing is if Godzilla's being called a plot device that means the movie he's in isn't very good. Its got writing so bad that Godzilla only exists in it to keep the plot from grinding to a halt and no other reason.
My unpopular opinion is that the Monsterverse Ghidorah looks like a three headed Smaug. I would have really liked if they added the mains on Ghidorahs head or at least have gave him the crest on his heads.
Godzilla King Of Kaiju Agreed, I know they’re just trying to be faithful, but they could’ve done something to differentiate him from other pop culture dragons
J Marcopulos I didn’t say that Monsterverse Ghidorah sucks because he looks a little too much like another creature. I’m just saying that it would’ve made the design better,
1. Yeah, they aren't great. And yeah, that ending still makes my throat close up a bit at the end. 2. Fair enough, there are seemingly multiple arcs in this one era, so splitting them up is a reasonable choice. I've more often than not seen people split it up by the first two, then King Kong vs Godzilla to Destroy All Monsters, and finally All Monsters Attack to Terror of Mechagodzilla. Your version gives a more even spread of movies though, which is good. 3. Hmm, I never really thought of it. Yeah, I guess so. Godzilla seems to gimmick out of most of the Mechagodzillas, and he usually stomps most of the Ghidorahs, so you're right. He melted his hand to the bone dude! 4. YES DUDE, THANK YOU!!! I will always rank my Godzilla films as Gojira, Shin Godzilla, and then the rest; the parallels to Fukushima and the satire alone give it way too much importance to be just another kaiju film. Plus, the scenes with Godzilla are clearly shot and beautiful. And the Gamera films he made were perfection. 5. I'm half-and-half on this one. His looks aren't important as long as he still represents the main ideas. But the movie he's built around is more important? I mean, yes, but something in me says I need more elaboration... I don't know. But you brought it back at the end, there is no one Godzilla, there is only the unending idea. 6. Yeah, those are good choices. I think the psychedelic feel of that one song in Godzilla vs Hedorah fits the best for that movie, which makes it my favorite.
One more thing I want to add, this is more about the Kaiju movies in general rather than just Godzilla. I don't think Pacific Rim is as good as people make it out to be. The world they set up is interesting but the story is so basic and bland. The only stand out performance is Idris Elba and they could've played with some of the tropes of kaiju movies a bit more cleverly.
It’s refreshing hearing a Godzilla/Tokusatsu content creator/western fan who actually has interesting shit to say and not regurgitated lowbrow horseshit.
So basically you rather have a Godzilla that is just there. No personality,no emotions,no nothing, even if he is emotionless. What makes alot of these movies interesting is a monsters MO or personality not them being there. You might as well just write them out if you feel that way.
That's why I can't stand Godzilla fandom. The moment they want to make a creative spin on Godzilla all these old timer complain and has negative view. In other fandom like mecha, kamen rider and ultraman, they are open to change. Although not all the change and experimentation are "good" atleast it keep things refreshing. No wonder Godzilla went into multiple hiatus, these fandom are so stuck up about Godzilla vs (insert monster) to care about if the story are good or not. This make it hard for new fans to get into Godzilla. Literally the worst tokusatsu fandom ever.
-The Heisei era is boring -King Kong vs Gozilla is a lame concept -The animated trilogy is is one of the most important entries in the franchise -Monsterverse Godzilla's design is too elegant -The American 1956 version is underrated -The Reiwa era is bold, smart and experimental, which is exactly what the franchise needs
Here’s a couple of unpopular opinions: - I don’t like the legendary version of king ghidorah both design and story wise. His design seems very bland as it uses elements from modern dragon depictions and doesn’t do anything unique to differentiate itself other than his horns which I can argue is the only unique trait. I also dislike how in the film they reveal how he’s an alien species yet does nothing with that revelation and adds a plot hole that probably won’t be answered in Godzilla vs kong, the plot hole being how he got to earth and why is he so similar to the other titans and have similar traits even though he is from an alien environment with its own unique variation of evolution. - I feel that the more times we establish Godzilla as a creature born from or controls nuclear radiation just only makes the allegory of the nuclear bomb feel forced and repetitive for future films in the Godzilla franchise, this makes the best and more interesting films like godzilla vs mothra, Godzilla vs biollante, shin godzilla and many other films more unique as they don’t linger on the message of nuclear being bad but instead focus on the repercussions of other things like genetic modification, corporate greed, poor government and others that are more relevant in the current world.
Well, actually, he does, the whole regeneration scene is based around that (i could throw a lot of stuff that correlate with the fact that he's an alien but i won't). Every single version of Ghidorah is too much Earth like to be Alien i think, with the exception of anime Ghidorah of course, but, since the space is really big, i guess there are infinite possibilities, there's a chance it's convergent evolution too, which is probably the case. Well, the novelization explained how Ghidorah got to Earth, but sincerely, i think the less we know about his origins and where he came the better, fear of the unknown.
Legendary Ghidorah is more serpentine. More cobra-esque. I wouldn't say he's bland. And the film not explaining how he got to earth isn't a plot hole. A plot hole is a contradiction, something in a story that should not happen. All you need to know is there's a dragon with three heads named Ghidorah from space that can breathe lightning, regenerate, and has an ancient history with Godzilla. Good enough.
Ok here are mine: -Godzilla 2014 is the worst Monsterverse movie - Raids again is one of the most important films - The Showa Era is the Worst Era - Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and KOTM are both underappreciated - Monsterverse Rodan is the Best Rodan - Mothra vs Godzilla is Overrated - Godzilla vs Biollante is the best Heisei Film Godzilla vs King Kong is a bad idea bc of our bias - The Anime Trilogy is better than the Heisei era - Destoroyah and SpaceGodzilla is a bit Overrated - King Ghidorah has only truly lived upto his name as 'Destroyer of Worlds' in KOTM and The Planet Eater
Aside from Shin Godzilla, the reiwa era has been the worst era of Godzilla so far The original 1954 classic without a doubt a great movie, but I just don't get as much enjoyment out of it as I do with almost every other one that cam after Mechagodzilla 2021 looks lame GvK was terrible
Godzilla 1998 spawned the air millenium, but it was godzilla 2014 that revived a godzilla franchise death after final wars and that boosted its popularity, for the first time we had two series godzilla at the same time and the studios already provide for future films.
1. I think Godzilla vs King Ghidorah is a lot worse than the 1998 Godzilla movie. 2. I think Godzilla vs Hedorah is a very overrated G movie. 3. I think Godzilla vs Gigan and Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla are good movies. 4. I think FW is a better version of Destroy all monsters. 5. I think Heisei Godzilla is kinda overrated. (Don't get me wrong I love Heisei Godzilla but I don't think he's as good as people say he is)
That's where me you will have to disagree my friend if not faithful to what godzilla is then it is simply not godzilla to me . To me godzilla earth is the worst incarnation of the character for one how boring he is and how he has zero personality and two he barley even moves
My unpopular Godzilla opinions are: I think Godzilla vs mechagodzilla 1993 and Godzilla vs spacegodzilla are underrated, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah is overrated, and I prefer to watch the Japanese version of Godzilla 2000 millennium
I don't really have much unpopular opinions though I guess some are the Showa movies are a bit meh, while I like Shin I think it's message might be a bit harmful, Gamera The Brave is the best Gamera movie and should be one of the best kaiju films, Heisei Gamera is meh, Heisei has the best characterization of Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again is underrated, Monster X/Keizar Ghidorah is cooler than King Ghidorah, Anime Ghidorah is not really Lovecraftian, Godzilla 1954 is good though a bit overrated, Destroy All Monsters is pretty mediocre, Skull Island is one of the best Kong films, and Space Godzilla is one of the best Godzilla kaiju.
Shin Godzilla is heavily overrated, and I am completely incapable of objectively, and fairly criticising it because of its release's personal impact on me.
