Not 100% true but I can see your point. Selling art can be very tricky. Depending on the crowd attention a convention that may be the type of work they want unfortunately 😩
Depends on the art style. If they change the originally cutesy or stylistic differences of the original show and replace it with an, admittedly common, "Tumblr nose" or by making the character look unrecognizable. I honestly just glance over it because I don't even recognize the character. Also, another thing that stings to admit for a lot of people is that not everyone likes the unique or overly stylized when it comes to fandom characters. And yeah, the chibi no-nose keychains are gonna sell more than the realistically rendered print of the same character. Especially if the rendered piece has a distracting feature. Most notably, the nose. There's a reason why ears and noses are drawn less and less. The more simplified you get. Because it is an easier way to draw a character by omitting details and it's well-received making it more popular. But at the end of the day it actually just boils down to whether the customer likes it or not, there is a market for both artistic interpretation and staying true to the original.
Honestly I like when its close to the original. I recently purchased keychains from a show i liked and thes are mainly drawn in the art style of the show but you can see a bit of the artists extra style in it. I really like that because to me that kind feels true to the original but also you can see the artists own style in it. Not saying that your own art style is bad at all. I adore that too! But i just like original artstyles better
They said "to me, personally" which made it clear it was just their opinion, not a fact. Not to mention that this is literally captioned with "unpopular art opinions" so this isn't even a big thing
I've been thinking about this! I've been drawing things too close to the original, and I was thinking I should draw it in my own style. Problem is I don't know exactly what my own style is... still trying to figure that out!
Good luck figuring out your style! Just keep experimenting with different things you like to draw/are attracted to in art. And you'll find something you like in due time
Whenever I go to conventions, If I can find it in a store, I’m not gonna buy it. Though there are a few exceptions, if it’s like cute or bizarre plushies. One of these exceptions was a hot tamales Funko plushy. One of my favorite things to get is pins! It has things that I like, I can show them off and it doesn’t take up too much space. I would like to get some keychains but I don’t want my keys to become too cluttered :( I like getting posters and other home decor items like magnets. I remember going to a convention and there was this little kid who drew a whole bunch of characters from different franchises, and sold them as magnets, pins and drawings. The drawings were so charming so I had to get some as magnets :) I can’t get those magnets anywhere else, I don’t get them for the exclusivity, but I just enjoy purchasing things from other fans! And we get to talk about the things that we like! Another one of my favorite things to do at conventions is talk to the booth runners, I’ve had many lovely conversations
If it looks like the original, then id say theres gotta be smth in the posing or whats happening that wasnt just clipped from the og,, then im chill with it,,, if it just looks exactly like the og tho,, then it feels closer tojust getting merch,, if that makes sense
See im primarily a horror artist(i draw the spooky) and i worry that if i do it in my style(make it a monstrosity) people just wont like it or they won't understand what is going on.
That is tricky 🤔 Not everyone will vibe with your art but hey maybe post it in similar communities or in a relevant reddit group? The people who vibe with your art are out there for sure. There is a market for everything ☺️
I can see that 🤔. At the end of the day artist will sell what is in demand for their audience. On the topic of affordability of the art, I feel like the items the artist sell can be about the same price of official merch or even more, because of manufacturing costs. Stickers & smaller items will be cheaper for sure, but once you get into tshirts, and larger items an artist may raise the price to balance with the cost to produce the item.
True! But they were also just talking about what sort of merch they personally as a consumer like to buy/look for. It's just their preference and they aren't saying not to buy from those who emulate the style of a series
