Why are Canadians incapable of pronouncing “Mario” properly?
@Cannotbetamed1
@Cannotbetamed1 6 лет назад
A combination of regional accents/dialect and an ever growing determination to say it ‘wrong’ every time someone complains about it. I think the real question is why do some people have such a stick up their butt about how Mario is pronounced?

The saving system in the beginning made me quit the game. Restarting the entire prologue after dying? Wasting 30 minutes? Fuck that piece of cancer.
@Taikaru
@Taikaru 4 года назад
Oof. It's easily one of the best games of the decade for me. I played it then watched 4 Let's Plays to see each different reaction. Cried every time. It does seem most who disliked it didn't finish - there were easier settings, and games don't have to serve victory on a silver platter. But I can agree on some of the terrain being boring and repetition... that was due to limited resources, but after the game's commercial success, the next may not be like that.
@Diepvries11

@@Taikaru If a game doesn't respect my time by making me start over after dying 30 minutes into the game, the game is a piece of cancer. I work 60+ hours a week and have a social life. I simply cannot accept it when a game is designed that way.
@Taikaru

@@Diepvries11 Fair enough - that's your standard and preference which is certainly legitimate. But those who will not mine, won't dig up much gold. I for one, will push beyond parts I don't like - sometimes to the excess, like I keep playing Blizzard games hoping for the stories to get better but they never do. But occasionally it allows me to find absolute gems that had a positive impact on my life, like Nier Automata. Cheers!

I almost quit at the end of route C because there were a lot of hacking mini game sections that I couldn’t get through and ran out of health, but I am so glad I did and would do it again, absolutely love it. Granted, difficulty has never been a turnoff for me. I also had a lot of problems as I was playing on pc, and had to tweak a lot of extra settings to get things running smoothly, that didn’t turn me off either. If you’re ever in the mood to give it another go, just know that it is that incredible of a game. And the “endings”? There are 3 that are the longest, and I would call them a base game, a dlc and a sequel rather than playthroughs, all the other ending you can easily unlock after those 3, and if you fail at certain times in certain way, which just seems to me like fine attention to detail instead of tedious. All of that being said, hating the soundtrack is just sacrilege, I think you ultimately end up hating it because it plays during moments that are supposed to evoke certain emotions but you are just focused on bad mechanics which forms bad impression. The soundtrack is seriously good though.

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me with Nier: Automata! Died after the first 40 minutes, had to start from scratch. It actually soured the rest of the experience for me, to the point that at a part much later in the game, when a certain character is about to die (avoiding spoilers here) I wasn't sure if I was playing well enough for the game's standards. Like, I could just see the game punishing me for not moving quickly enough and making me start that whole section over again. It was a shame, because afterwards I realized that what was probably a very emotional part of the story for most people was instead ruined for me, because all I could think about at the time was how annoying it would be if I screwed it up -- all because I never got off on the right foot with the game to start with. Sorry for the little rant. Nier: Automata is just so critically acclaimed, and while I did enjoy my time with it (albeit in a frustratingly muted capacity), it's just so uncommon to hear someone else with similar complaints about the game. Or indeed, any complaints at all. The game's on such a high pedestal that it's hard to criticize it without offending people just because you didn't like their favorite game. Here's another unpopular opinion: I actually prefer the first Nier, by far. It had better characters, a better story, and (anybody can crucify me for this if they want, I don't care) better music. Or at least, music that actually stuck with me, with tracks I still listen to to this day. While Automata's music was pleasant enough to listen to, and certainly more intricate, I honestly can't recall any specific arrangement. And that's frustrating, because the most important part of ANY rpg to me is the music. Okay, I could keep going obviously, so I'll just stop there. Again, sorry for the rant. Had to get something off my chest, I guess.

weebs are weebs, anything you say about their fav opera they will scream at you. same shit happens with Sword art online. it's a shitty anime from every point of view, but weebs will defend it no matter what. Nier automata is the SAO of games imho, it's a mediocre game gameplay wise, with a good story (nothing new if you already know the cyberpunk philosophy) nothing more. but games should be games before anything else, for good story there are movies or books. But you can see the same shit with kojima, japanese artists wants to make movies but they can't so they try that bullshit in game industry.

I respect your opinion and I really appreciate the fact you tried games before judging, you know what you feel and what you’re talking about. For me about nier automata, You said it was frustrating to have so few saves points in game at the beginning, i know how it could be complicated to accept these kinds of issues ( I tried it in difficult mod, the beginning was a nightmare, but I used to, as dark souls it gives you the opportunity to be so proud after this difficult moment ) About the endings, I really appreciate what they did, I’m sure you ever had a game you loved and you would never finish the story,search and continue to discover secrets even in NG+, that’s what Nier offers to player. For example you can buy all the PlayStation trophies for the platinum in game to an npc after did 3 times the game, this ultimate troll. Sorry for my broken English by the way I’m French 😅

@wolfman8325

I agree. I liked the game to an extent. But so many of the design decisions sucked. It felt like it was stretching out 10 hours of content into 30 + hours. There were some great parts but... The map was horrendous. Having no fast travel for large portions sucked. Playing through the same parts, and same environments sucked. I expected the later routes to open up more locations but it mostly just recycled the same areas over and over, big bland areas with nothing to do in them, which I had played through already. The side quests were as generic as can be. Some missions were literally "go to the village, go back to the camp, go back to the village" without fast travel. Also half my side quests just failed with no indication that I had reached a cutoff point, and I had to play another 8 hours just to get back to that point in route B. What kind of crappy design is that? Give the player no warning and stop all their side progress without telling them they can return to the missions later. For hours I was in a bad mood. Combat was okay, fun enough, but not a lot of depth to it, you could just spam the pod. Also the levelling system was pointless cause enemies scale up anyway I think. And the story was kinda nonsense. I liked the characters though. I enjoyed it somehwat. .It had some good boss fights and those R-Type sections were cool. But overall, overrated by weebs and critics.

@@Cannotbetamed1 Do not worry. It is not just that. The game is super pseudo-philosophical and pseudo-psychological. Anyone with critical thought would have a problem with it. I do find these kind of videos really interesting even if I disagree with you about almost every game you listed. Nier: Automata for me was the complete opposite, didn't really think I would like it since I'm not that into the platinum games hack'n'slash-style of gameplay and I usually don't care that much about stories in games (gameplay is the important part) - but with this one I thought the story was excellent and the gameplay really clicked with me. Absolutely one of my favourite games of the last few years. I have played almost 200 hours of Stardew Valley, completed Undertale, picked up almost all the moons in Super Mario Odyssey and beaten Duck Tales lots of times.

Being a big fan of Nier: Automata I felt like I wanted to say some thoughts on the points you made. Sorry for the super duper long comment!! Firstly, I, too, died on the first big boss and had to reset the game. I, too, got very annoyed about it and was a second away from putting the game down, but my brother had sent me the game and promised I’d enjoy it so I continued. I do completely agree that the choice to make a lack of saves and lock off the menu screen was odd and not in a good way. That said, I disagree with a lot else. I loved the environments; the art style was super cool meaning I loved exploring the game as it was a joy to look at. There were some really unique environments too that I have never seen before in a video game, such as the amusement park wit the cute lil dancing androids. The environments were also varied, from cities to deserts to forests etc. + the lack of immediate fast travel didn’t bother me. I guess this is personal preference, but I’m the kinda boring player who loves slowly going around the beautiful world some games develop and I sometimes don’t even use fast travel if it is an option. I really enjoyed the combat to be honest, it was hack’n’slash done right; it wasn’t exceptional I guess, but I didn’t find it boring, clunky or bad. In terms of the structure, I also found replaying part a lot of part A through part B kinda annoying. Again, I went off recommendation and in my opinion Part C payed off for all the time I spent in Part B. (I hate how C and B rhyme). I also died at the same point in 2B’s story and had to reset, literally the exact same way... that all said, I felt like you stopped right as the game actually got good. After (spoilers I guess) 2B dies, the game gets superrr interesting, creative, dark, there are a ton of ‘what the fuck plot twists’ and I just finished the game over the course of one night as I couldn’t put it down. I respect the game has a lot of tedious aspects, but after finishing the whole thing all that stick with me were the good stuff and a story that explored some really interesting themes. As for your last two points, I A D O R E D the soundtrack, each to their own musical taste I guess however. I don’t like anime either, but fuck that because I still thought this game was great. I respect that some of the game’s more tedious elements made it harder to play, I guess I just wanted to share the side from someone who loved the game and thought the good in beating it outweighed some of the more annoying segments. ~Sorry for the essay haha, I hope something I said actually makes sense :/
@Cannotbetamed1
@Cannotbetamed1 4 года назад
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I thought the amusement park was the best part of the game by far - it was a great place to explore, I liked the music there, and the fights on the roller coaster and especially the opera fight were amazing! But any time I was in the ruined city, or especially the desert, I was not having fun.

Valid arguments on Nier: Automata. I was some how able to push thru some of those bad design choices and complete the game. I found at the end that I loved the game despite all the poor design choices. As frustrating as the game could be at times I did feel I had to give credit to the devs for attempting to try something new. While some mechanics worked very well most didn't BUT I think with a bit more brainstorming some of those design choices could have been tweaked a bit to make for a fantastic game play experience. No spoilers but the story while nothing new or revolutionary is quite tragic... It reminded me of the ending of the original Berserk anime series.

I can totally get on board with some of your choices. A lot of the games you listed I have watched other people play but couldn't be arsed to play them myself, either because the subject matter turned me off or I just didn't care all that much. Odyssey especially mostly just seemed like it had 'cute' mechanics but nothing that actually held my interest for any span of time. The same with Undertale; I'm glad other people like it, but aesthetically, I'm not in the target audience and to be frank, I think the music did a lot of the heavy lifting.

Wow, Pam, you really didn't like 999? I played it originally on DS a few years ago and was absolutely stunned by all the aspects of that game (and I don't even like visual novels) It has multiple endings, but in order to see them you have to make different decisions and take alternative routes. And every time you do that you'll see new parts of the game, new aspects about the characters and story, so you wont be playing the same thing over and over. But, while I love the concept and it's execution, I agree that the characters talk too much and the narrative can get tiring at times. Anyway, give Lili and Max a kiss for me, love you :)

The game kept telling me I was getting close to New Donk City, but each time it did there was another stop along the way and I didn't wanna play any of those other stages. I just wanted to play New Donk City. Eventually I just became disinterested. I did play it longer than I played Super Mario Sunshine, though. As far as 3D Mario games go, nothing touches Super Mario 64. A couple of the other games you mentioned I had not heard about like 999. In fact the only one I'm interested in trying (someday) would be Neir Automata. Or Nier? I dunno. Also, thumbs up for your comments on handheld gaming.

I’ve thought that there must be something wrong with me for not completing Nier Automata even once. The excellent unique soundtrack, otherworldly atmosphere, and fast fluid combat kept me engaged for several hours, until I felt I’d reached a point where I was about as competent at combat as I was ever going to be. And that moment, mysteriously enough, was when my interest just dropped off.

For me, it’s Persona 5. I tried and tried and TRIED to get into it, but it has too many serious flaws. The dialogue and characterization are childish, trite and repetitive, offering the same obvious points again and again (“You’re on thin ice!”, “Stay out of trouble!” etc.), the graphics are stylish but dated, a lot of the music is muzak on a torturous loop, and even the famous everyday life mechanics amount to little more than simple presses of a single button to watch an animation unfold. The combat was unspectacular too. Just completely don’t understand why it’s so beloved.

The popular video game that I don't like is "Horizon Zero Dawn". I honestly don't get how this game became so beloved and overrated, its a 7/10, maybe 8/10 at very best, but people talk about it like its something special. Its a boring collectathon slog full of empty side fetch missions, and the combat isn't nearly as "innovative" or interesting as people make it out to be. It was also just silly to make a character who in cut-scenes can flip and dive, spin through the air etc, but in real gameplay time, you're limited to only very specific climbing spots always highlighted with obvious yellow ropes? LOL pretty lame.
@novelezra

I just saw your new video where you talked about Danganronpa (a game I hated) and you said you hated 999 so I wanted to find out why. It sounds like you didn't complete the game, which I understand I suppose if you weren't enjoying it. But, I will just say, if you ever change your mind and want to complete it. You will be in for one of the best endings ever in a video game. Possibly the best ending to any Japanese video game ever made. You know when you play a puzzle game and the plot is full of cool ideas and concepts but they never go anywhere? 999 is the opposite of that. I know you found it too wordy, but it's all in aid of possibly one of the most astonishing and creative endings ever. The games multiple endings are filler, everything in the game has purpose and it's meta to the point of beauty. If you choose not to complete it then I understand but if you ever get the itch (and hopefully this post does that) then please try. Even if you hate it after all is said and done then at least you can know you tried! And if you think I'm just some guy who likes visual novels, thats not the case at all. I cant stand 99% of visual novels, my favourite games are stuff like Broken Sword and GK2

Hi Pam. I would really love to hear you do a review for the Chrono Trigger fan made sequel Flames Of Eternity. That game is superlative and it truly encapsulates the spirit of it's predecessor while expanding upon the whole time travel concept. Hopefully you have already played this game. If not I emphatically recommend that you do. Also, I would not be surprised in the least if the makers of Chrono Trigger got their idea for the "End of Time" location from Edward Packard's Choose Your Own Adventure (Quantum Reality) The Cave of Time novel. He in turn may have partially got the idea of the Old Man in the "Time outside of Time" cave from the Twilight Zone episode "The Old Man In The Cave" from 1963.

can i ask what you played 999 on? because when i played through the rerelease on PC all i needed to do was pick some new dialogue choices in 2 of the sections, skipping dialogue (you can set it to auto skip seen dialogue) where necessary. that said, your other points probably weigh much more against the game anyway.

I played it on the DS. I didn't notice any of the dialogue being skippable.
@maboroshi1986
@maboroshi1986 6 лет назад
yeah that would explain it, the PC rerelease adds skippable dialogue and the flowchart view from the sequels. it makes navigation through the story a breeze for the changes to get the actual ending. when i played on the DS (after the PC version) i felt their loss very heavily. also one of your complaints about the game being too dialogue heavy is mitigated slightly, they include a portrait view with the characters so it's more like a conventional visual novel...if you're into that kind of thing.
@thechief237
@thechief237 6 лет назад
After you've played it through once on the DS, you can hold down a trigger (or some button, it prompts you after you complete a playthrough) to breeze past all of the dialogue you've already experienced. Also the game won't let you accidentally skip past dialogue that is crucial or any that you haven't seen. I enjoyed the hell out of it, but that's just me and my mystery games lol. I had to go pick up the other 2 in the series after I finished the first.

And my item/weapon menu just got cluttered with crap. The constant pausing before battle really took me out of the game.

I have picked up on people not liking Odyssey as much as other Mario games [or games in general] - I for one really liked the open-world aspect, and it removes the 'use star to fly to planetoid' or planetoid stuff from the Galaxy games [which I still like]. Also, I haven't played Undertale, and when I do, I'll keep my expectations or comparisons to games like Earthbound reasonable, so I'm not like 'But people said this game was amazing! Why?' I was disappointed in Mario Odyssey. It felt really undercooked, like a bunch of ideas just slapped together, rather than one fully realized, fully fleshed-out game. Personally, while I would prefer a gimmick-free experience (I STILL want more or less an epic 3D Mario 3 type of game), I enjoyed Mario Galaxy when it was new a LOT more than Odyssey. For that matter, I enjoyed 3D World more, in spite of how maddening some of those stars were to get (and in spite of the fact that they REALLY dropped the ball not just making it Subcon, and not having more SMB2 baddies in the game, including Wart). Overall, MO seemed like an okay game. But I just didn't see how "awe inspiring" many people made it out to be. I got frustrated with it more than I had fun with it, to be perfectly honest. The gimmick of taking over enemies and using their powers is cool on paper, but in execution, MOST of the powers you get are very limited, and some of them are actually fairly useless, or just un-fun to use. It's not a BAD game, by any means. But I certainly don't want the next 3D Mario to be anything like it.

Haven't played most of these but can somewhat agree with Nier Automata, but for somewhat different reasons. To me it was mostly the combat and bosses, since they lacked depth. The difficulty was also really unbalanced, where Easy, Normal, and Hard were pathetically easy, while Very Hard is only for complete masters. Also the lack of checkpoints is incredibly annoying. I can't imagine ever playing on Very Hard, since that means taking a single hit will put you back at least 10-15+ minutes. ========== One game that pretty much everyone adores but I hate is Shadow of the Colossus. Everyone says it is really intense, but I don't see that. It is nigh impossible to die in this game, so what is so intense about it? You have to actively go out of your way to fail. You already know that you *are* going to win. The story isn't all that good either. And the horse scene did nothing for me. I don't really care about fictional animals that do nothing, to be honest. - Great video by the way. New subscriber :3

Once it got a reputation for being “hardest game ever!!!” it’s as if it was taboo to say that the games are just not well made.

Hi Pam ! If you should pick up another Uncharted game in the future I´d recommend the second one. Naturally Part 4 is superior on a technical level but Uncharted 2 has the best level design, locations and side-characters. Every other game in the series has a couple of boring, even annoying chapters but I can´t think of bad one in Uncharted 2. ... and Max looking at the camera @7:20 so cute 😺

The Uncharted games can be a pain in the ass because of the puzzles that never made that much sense to me and forces me to look up a walk-through on RU-vid just so I can get pass them. But aside from that, I love the games. I haven't played The Last of Us yet.

I agree 100% I played Nier Automata for 4 hours and haven't picked it up since. I't not a pretty game to look at. I've been saying that Duck Tales is one of the most overrated games of all time for years.

So I finally got around to finishing Nier Automata last weekend....So now I love it. I'm not an RPG player and I often get frustrated by the level up and crafting systems. I decided to finish this game and learn about the things that were going on. I put over 100 hours into this game. I wanted to find all the weapons, do the side quests, level up to 99 etc.

For 999, the Nonary Games version is by far and away the worse version from a writing standpoint. The original was written with a dual screen as a critical component to the story. One screen was for exposition and the other for dialogue. Nonary Games took the exposition and implanted it into dialogue to compensate for the lack of a second screen. Characters constantly narrating was exclusive to the rerelease. It was not that way in the DS version that most people have not played. Not to mention the ending doesn't function with only 1 screen. The story actively demanded a second screen, and the way they adjusted it in Nonary Games was pretty bad. There were many ways to handle the transition to a different platform and they picked, like, the worst one.
