What are performance considerations to doing decals like this rather then geometry? Do DBuffer decals in this decal method have draw calls? Whats the performance considerations?

Uh. Odd. In the UE5, even with the Project Settings Dbuffer Decals on, the dropdown menu isn't showing. Maybe they changed something?

Hi Ryan! In the video you mentioned that you would later show how to take care of the cases when the decal wraps around corners/onto other objects and gets stretched out. Any updates on that? :D

Hey mate. I noticed in the video time 2:40 you have the blur smudged effect of the decal. And you say there a way around fixing that so the decal wraps around. I am extremely interested learning how to make the decal sit on different axis and surfaces with out the blur smudge effect. Can you please provide a link or video explaining how to resolve this ??

When i change the blend mode to DBuffer Tranlutent Colour Normal Roughness the Emissive Colour does not blend out. And its still transparent... Why not a single thing works for me

Any help on what to do if Decals dont show up in an unlit area? Dbuffer decals do not work.

Hey, just curious if there is any way that I can get Emissive to work with DBuffer decals, Im using a landscape and want to stop it from recieving decals, the only way I have found to do this is to turn the DBuffer response for decals in the landscape material to "None". This however means I NEED to have DBuffer decals, but im using emissive decals :/

What's with the smearing? I made a graphic in photoshop with no background and UE4 then takes the sides and smears them on both sides to fill the negative space. Why?!

I'm having a decal problem. My road lines decals are reflecting onto my character and truck. i turned off accept decal on truck. but any item i put in truck bed still gets the road lines. any way to turn it off in decals so i dont have to turn it off on every item in my game?

My emissive color link doesn't gray out like you. It's the strangest thing. i'm selecting the dbuffer option, same as yours but it won't gray out :(

Thanks for the DBuffer tip! Looking forward to your tutorial on dealing with decal stretching. I ran into the same problem recently and had to scale down along one axis to get a barely acceptable result. And btw cool propaganda poster. Some wise words right there :D

any workflow updates for decals in 2019?. Also, I got a question, traslucency has a big impact in performance. Is texturing by decals a good workflow? or is better texturing in substance each asset?

When I add a normal map to my DBuffer opaque decal, it makes the decal look black.

Thaanks :) I'd probably never ever set them to emissive, that would kinda destroy darker scenes and no shadows can really have a big enough influence on it

Good vid. Very useful to quickly achieve all kinds of shenanigans. Don't know if over-reliance on decals is bad for performance though.

@Ryan Laley Do you know if there is a way to procedurally place decals on a landscape or even a landscape spline based road? I'm trying to find a way to scatter puddle decals along a road that is a few miles long.

When you created the poster decal, why not use a plane with the texture on it?

You could do, but this can be expensive as it's added verts to be drawn. Also we want the picture to be actually on the wall. A plane you would need to line up perfectly to avoid it clipping or occluding.

I cant turn off decals on landscape material. I have turned off on the character, but I simply cant turn off on the landscape. Decal response dbuffer: off doesnt help. I use marerial attribute. Any advice?

The first way of doing it doesn't work in darker unlit areas, but the second method did. Good work!

I have a problem. the decal is not going with the darkness in my level. it just stays visible. how do I make it blend with the darkness?

So what is the benefit of using Dbuffer? :) Use for better optimization or its just an option, but it will no effect game optimization? :)

It shouldn't affect performance. As I understand it, it changes when something is drawn through the renderer

On the mesh is a tick box that says receive decals. Tick it.

Just a random thought I always wondered how nice a MP game map would be if the damage like bullet holes and explosion impacts does NOT disappear with a timer and stays for duration of match. Like smoke hanging in the air. I always just assumed its for "cost" reasons (processing the extra information of decals) that this is not common. Any thoughts on that? I was just wondering. Also of course someone can go nuts and shoot a thousand or more bullet holes into the floor and that would obviously put a lot of weight on the game thread. I wonder if it could be done somehow though ...

first, nice video tut... but you do not have to click the box, but only in the empty field of the material (3:30). And if you first put blendmode on Translucent and then on Deferred Decal, there is no error. cheers :)

Thanks for the comment. I wanted to explain the error and what it means, as it is most commonly the error people have. But yes you are right, if you do it that order you want get the error at all.

how do you attach the decals to a moving mesh like an enemy being shot or a physics object getting blood splattered on it from something else?

i guess add the decal to te actor directly , for example a trigger box would be attachted to a door actor directly
