This balance is created by the middle cord and the chains. They aren't there to sell an illusion. They all carry the weight .

The chains are mainly there to limit the height of the table and keep tension on the rubber band. If they weren't there, the rubber band would pull the one piece of wood to the same height as the other one, lifting the table even higher, and at that point the band would no longer have tension, causing the whole thing to fall.
