def looks interesting, the question is if they can carve out a place in the market. other than that i think their identity isnt too clear yet which is what held me back from checking it out. its not really full games, but its not really a shared metaverse either from what i understand. a personal thing that would make me dive into it immediately is VR support, if you could build worlds for VR it would be a major win for new content for that niche. but that userbase would probably be way too low. thank you for the informative video! :)

I've known about Core for some time(disclosure: I know one of the founders) and have been having some interesting conversations lately about this kind of shift in how the factors of game production are getting unbundled and rebundled, with AAA retail gradually transitioning towards service games, indie titles getting attached to subscription services, and the rise of asset stores and mod-friendly platforms in the midst of this as two kinds of marketplace approaches to monetizing development, alternatives to the complete experience you usually get from a game on Steam. A lot of the difficulty is really in getting eyeballs in the right places. I see comments here talking about flipping a shitty game on Core. That's identical to doing the same thing on Steam with Unity assets. The perceived quality of the platform just comes down to what the platform chooses to promote or to filter out, and if they're doing their homework that kind of effort gets filtered. If the platform pushes good content and has some marketing spend behind it, it can get some traction and succeed with either business model. And if the marketing is grassroots, it can still work, it just takes longer - that's how itch did it. As for Core itself, the tech is interesting. I still need to play with it sometime.
@Armitage1982
@Armitage1982 3 года назад
Interesting take. I suggest you take a look at it now, it was quicker than expected because contrary to what I thought, I ended up with a very limited engine with a crying lack of a content editor. I may have missed the more "high level" concept, but I thought that with a name like Unreal Engine behind it, the level of flexibility would be there. I think there is a market for a middleware product, between a full blown Unreal Engine and something like dream & co. But in the form of Core it's still very immature.

I've been developing games on Roblox for a long time, and making more than a living. I have not tried Core yet, and one of the reasons is that I don't actually see how you would sustainably monetize. It's pretty clear on Roblox by making a game, and selling whatever you want. Roblox also has a premium payout system to earn money from your game without even selling anything. The other thing turning me away from Core is that all of the content has to be made within Core. With Roblox, for the things that I don't want to model inside the engine, I could use Blender, hire a modeler, or find a kit online and get the exact 3d models that I want for my projects. Core does seem to have the upper hand on graphical fidelity though. That is a strong draw, and Roblox seems to be taking it seriously trying to close that gap.

Kinda tempted to have a go at it but the big problem I have with it apparently it's only supporting their assets for now? So that means a lot of games will end up very samey as Art and Sound - Assets are basically what is setting your game apart from others the most. Maybe Dwarf Fortress is the better game but Rimworld made it more accessible with clear graphic representation etc.

I've been using it for a few days. As mentioned in my other comment, it's a great idea apart from the obvious problems with the unrealistic monetization scheme (the reward-for-plays thing was just temporary and by invitation only), the "everything-belongs-to-everybody" model and the fact that you can only make one style of game, but the answer is NO - as far as I can tell, there is no way to create new assets or even basic primitives. And as far as "powerful modding" is concerned, unless you mean scaling and kitbashing of existing 3D objects and "community content", there is literally NO way of creating your own assets from scratch (neither in the editor itself nor by means of importing them) and they have publicly stated (in the form of a comment on one of their own videos) that they have no intention of ever making it possible to import assets to the Core editor, so I guess you might as well learn UE4 for now - a valuable (and transferrable) skill with none of the limitations. The only downside of UE4 is that you have to market and/or fund your own games, which for a lot of game devs is a bigger challenge than anything else. The "Feedback" section on their Discord is apparently also just there to make users feel like their suggestions matter since nobody there ever seems to reply or even monitor it (maybe they do but there is no way of telling). Pity though, it seems to me that including basic modelling functionality would would have be the number 1 thing they could have addressed at the very beginning, instead of hyping their community content and kitbashing "features", which after a few hours of use becomes extremely frustrating due to the obvious limitations that kitbashing implies.
@Chadderbox
@Chadderbox 3 года назад
Your opinion on Core appears to be almost the exact same as I said in my video, basically Roblox but suped up with UE4. One criticism I had was that you couldn't make money and the fact they have fixed that makes it a bit better. If this takes off, I might have another look at it, but I place it in the same group as Roblox for now.
@gamefromscratch
@gamefromscratch 3 года назад
I view Core as more targeted at game developers than Roblox. It feels much more like a game creation tool at the end of the day, like a really easy to use game engine, as opposed to a modifiable platform. Monetization though is the key to success, building that in from day one is important. But yeah, ultimately you can tell Roblox was the number one inspiration and or target for the core team, that much is obvious. Got imagine their elevator pitch was "It's like Roblox but..."

if they want it to take off they need to absolutely pump it with assets, currently still very lackluster selection it could fill the niche of being able to release a game and potentially turn a profit without a minimum 2year investment, meaning it would allow for a lot more creativity... but having poop assets kind of defeats that purpose.

They really ought to polish their "core" (pun intended) product first IMO before going about monetization. I've checked out Core a few times thus far; the most recent being a month or so ago and it's just kind of... well janky for lack of a better term. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool idea and all. But the actual games feel really underwhelming. Just the default character controller itself is kind of meh. Try crouching and you'll see what I mean. Latency was kind of an issue to for me. Anyway; cool idea, good luck to them. Just hope they actually polish some stuff first.

Second Life is a huge sandbox where people steal and sell other peoples' work. EDIT: The reason monetizing mods for Skyrim did not go over well was twofold. 1. the mod author would only get 25% of the money. 2. Most mods are people modifying (hence the word mod) work someone else did and then uploading it. This means the uploader would be getting money for assets they did not create.

So 50% of the profit go to creator, in best case scenario he is allowed to release to Steam so he ends up losing another 30%, so he is down to 20% and if he is not able to release to steam then he loses 90% of the potential profit (assuming core captures 10% of the pc market which is crazy optimistic) so the creator makes a majestic 5% of the maximum potential value of his game.
