In this episode of my unreal engine third person shooter series, I am going to add an IK function to the left hand of the soldier character to keep the left hand on the rifle. At the moment, due to mismatches in animations, the left hand of the character is slightly away from the rifle's position where the hand should be. I am going to move the left hand to correct position using IK.

at 3:02 you start with this BPI Animation. no one would know what that is or where to start unless you watch the previous video. for anyone confused the link is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nGHlwW2V0zs.html and the time stamp is 14:13 where he starts to make and apply it so you can continue watching this one lol. hope this saves someone struggling the same as myself.

This was an awesome helpful video thankyou so much! I got everything to work as it seems but i have some issues some, or the video creator might be able to answer! (2Years later lol) - My left arm is automatically rotated by 360 degrees and now has a weird twisted elbow, why is that? -> Will play around with the socket a bit. - More important question, is there a possibility to make it more - instantanous? Iam in First person and if i look up and down the hand lags slightly behind. Thank you!!

( TIP: I just spent a bit of time figuring out that I had forgotten to uncheck the PAUSE ANIMATIONm that seriously messed with everything! :-) )

Would the new ue5 ik rig or control rig be more useful for this?

I have a question regarding this - since your character is always holding the gun this works great. However what if the character had no weapons or if you drop it? How can you disregard the LeftHandPosition - when it is not set - and use the default animation positions?

Changing the alpha of tha modify bone to 0. I'm going to add different weapons to the character

@@CodeLikeMe Thanks - I found a different solution to that, but it looks rather messy if you want to do conditional IK on both hands and feet. The tool is 'Blend pose by bool' - I will have to look into the alpha, that would have the same effect setting to 0 will disregard the 'Two Bone IK' all together, and it will look less messy - also the Alpha will allow you to lerp to the position! forums.unrealengine.com/development-discussion/animation/43716-two-bone-ik-updating-1-frame-later As it turns out - you can actually set a boolean for each IK bone, and that will go directly into 'Two Bone IK' - in that way you get the same result without too much mess.

you can make a boolean like isHoldingGun, and use that as the alpha since true = 1, and false = 0.

@@jaspervandijk27 Thanks, yes I was not aware of what that Alpha did. :-) I worked it out and did this with the "Stoopid Shooters" package, now I have these Mixamo guys running and shooting them self. It took some doing but you can get them to pick the gun and start shooting until the enemy is dead etc. then they will return the gun to their back - a good way to add a bit of life to you game. @codelikeme has a lot about this just check it all!

Not working in my case. I brought in perfect animation from blender but in unreal 5 when I use Aim down animation the left hand displaces in midway and then get's to the right position. By using your method of IK this solved it but not my hand always from front and back whenever I am aiming up or down. Plus when I move character camera fast hence up and down the hand lags behind. solution?

If your hand position seems to consistent without the IK should we still do this portion of the tutorial? Worried this could cause issues.

Would that be because you started with the Paragon characters/skeleton? Because I just used the standard skeleton and a general military figure from the store and the gun stays in both hands correctly though all anims

I'm using mixamo animations. But some guns can have different holding positions, in that case this would be useful

@@CodeLikeMe It should also be noted that the hand position(s) can actually be slightly off from one skeletal mesh from another. I have this problem with several of the characters from the marketplace, where their hand positions of the mesh itself (in other words, the "thickness" of the mesh around the hands/fingers) is different enough that the hand position on the gun varies from one marketplace mesh set to another.

hello my IK is not updating fast enough. When looking up and down (I use different animations and I also have a spine rotation offset.
