We are back at the Ocean Corporation exploring commercial diving. Today we are posting a drill used to practice what to do when an under water welder becomes unresponsive. Hope this shines a little light on the world of commercial diving.
Check out oceancorp.com for more info.

I did this for almost 40 years. Started in the Navy, First Class deep Sea Diver for 18 of my 20 then worked commercial for most of the next 20. Also a year doing underwater bridge inspections for the Florida DOT. I loved every minute. Even when it sucked, was freezing, raining, zero visibility because when you get it done in those conditions you're allowed to be proud when you tell someone you're a Deep Sea Diver.

am i to old at 50 to do underwater welding, ive been a boilermaker / weld all my life.
@careyrose6059
@careyrose6059 4 года назад
@@horseshoe182 I know a number of divers 50+ that I worked with. Obviously myself included. I don't know anyone personally that got started at that age. Age isn't really the question. Getting a commercial certification is expensive and somewhat time consuming, Do you have any experience in the water? Recreational SCUBA? Welding is about the easiest thing we do. Cleaning 50 years of marine growth off a sea wall before you make your first tack weld is where the work is. Running hydraulic hull scrubbers on 900' container ships with a 100' plus beam in 200' of water can take some getting used to. I've seen experienced SCUBA divers freak when a hat went on and the breach ring was locked. I know this is long winded. The short version is you never know who gonna be the stud diver and who's going to suck at it until you suit up. Good luck.
@careyrose6059
@careyrose6059 4 года назад
Forgot to add this. What is your physical condition? There is a pretty comprehensive diving physical that must be passed every 2 years. EKG, chest xray, spirometer (sp) lung volume/function test. Higher body fat off gases less efficiently and makes you more susceptible to decompression sickness (bends). Just be honest with yourself. It cost too much to try and wing it.

Note how when he's on the bottom, the "distressed diver's" suit looks black, but once he's hoisted up to the bell you can see that it's red. The rescue diver's orange suit looks almost brown ("burnt orange" to use the art term) at depth. This is an excellent example of how water absorbs different colors/frequencies of light differently depending on depth, with red being the first to disappear. When I'm doing underwater photography, I often use a red filter on my light so that I can replace missing red light without over-exposing other colors. If I'm deep enough that all colors are being dimmed, I use an unfiltered/white light.

Excellent video. One point of observation from someone who actually had a 'real world' rescue experience along these lines (diver passed out from lack of O2 in the mix), the 'pick point' that we used was a ring on the very upper back of the diver (O ring in the harness). As unconscious diver was winched up into our chamber, his limp body was somewhat streamlined which facilitated getting him through hatch and subsequent hat removal. Hopefully you all keep doing these drills as if they are real. Someday, they may be.

Last breath is a good documentary on Netflix about a sat diver getting his umbilical cord snapped from the bell due to a storm and the ship loosing it's auto thrusters to stay on location. He survived half an hour without air before they could get the ship back to him and make a rescue. He had 5 minutes worth of air on his bailout bottle. They were breathing a helium mixture so thats one thing that saved him. Definitely worth watching

The purpose of drills are not to see how fast you can do it, but to make sure that you don't miss one of the steps. Once you get it right, you can work on getting it done faster. With that in mind, I would say that this is a good example of how its done. Its done differently in other places, but most always dictated by company procedure. Would be a good idea to keep the standby diver dressed throughout the dive, you could possibly save a couple of minutes, especially if you have to go look for him first...

Well thanks for video upload, that's way too different diving rescue in states compared to the UK or rest of the world we follow IMCA training. There is few things are not correct, 1st, after he opens his freeflow of the hat of main supply need to turn off and open his emergency supply (assume if he collapses by breathing contaminated air) 2nd rescue diver, must have 1feet safety lanyard so he can connect himself with diver chest D ring ( so the victim diver close to him and lifting the diver upright position and even rescuer can support victims diver neck to avoid neck injury and his fins or pressure gauge or any tool not get entangled during rescue which avoids delay to clear up in rescue process) 3rd rescue diver should connect man hoist on victim divers harness neck D ring (that will help victims diver stand straight upright and even rescuer can support victims diver neck to avoid neck injury) The commercial diver training in States is not updated so now ADCI and IMCA try to work together to improve the diving safety standards. www.divingtask.com

Thanks for posting this I was about to ding on several of your points especially the heads up portion, venting does not work if the head is down and the helmet is flooded. Also control of the airway, if the head is tilted down airway can be blocked with the potential for AGE, or lung expansion injurie. The recovering diver needs full control of the injured/non responsive diver. I am glad to see them running drills, it just needs some refinement to make it right.
@danielmattson678
@danielmattson678 4 года назад
I've been a dive supervisor for 10 years, training like this is what kills people... All regulations require direct umbilical control from a tender, that means that an in-water tender should have been used in any operation where a bell is used. Standby should have been ready to splash immediately, gloves are required on all job sites. The retrieval device should be hooked to the retrieval D-ring behind the divers head and the standby should have attached himself to the unresponsive diver after opening his egs valves to ensure bad gas was not the result of the diver losing consciousness. When it happens in real life these things matter, I hope they change their curriculum.

I am no diver but retired FD. It seems to me if there were more secure lift rings on the suit around the upper torso and, a power winch higher up in the bell capable of lifting a heavy load, this procedure could be made easier and faster. We all know seconds matter in any rescue situation. Under water where there is no way to administer CPR etc. seconds turn into minutes upping mortality rate 100 fold.
@richardjohnston2904
@richardjohnston2904 4 года назад
We appreciate the feedback and I agree time is critical when dealing with a distressed or unresponsive diver. A rescue diver is capable of administering CPR once in the bell. A winch is not practical as it requires a power source, depth issues and salt water which in time destroys nearly everything
@puppyupper4565
@puppyupper4565 3 года назад
@@richardjohnston2904 any reputable underwater welding operation must absolutely have a winch. If it's not practical then you have no business doing this type of welding. Safety is more important than a winch wearing out because of salt water. Most serious underwater welders use hydraulic grinders, winches and other tools. This requires an engine on a boat or platform. Guess what, they have to replace things often as they wear out. You response is utter nonsense. If you run this school God forbid the poor habits you ingrain in your students. This safety diver did everything wrong. The unresponsive diver's air should have been switched out as his air may be the reason for his unresponsiveness. His head should have been elevated, to keep water from getting into his mouth and lungs. His head was down at one point. And he absolutely should have been winched out of there. If this was at a deeper depth this man would have most likely died in a real world exchange. If you practice wrong you will get it wrong when it matters.

Do you still have to do those super long ascents when you’ve got that giant metal helmet?
@matthewluttrell9413
@matthewluttrell9413 3 года назад
Yes, those helmets aren't pressurized so you still need to ascend slowly if you've been at depth
@irikuchitharnaby1219
@irikuchitharnaby1219 3 года назад
along with the other reply even if the hat was pressurized your body would not be and you would still need to ascend slowly the only time you wouldnt need to do that is if you had a fully pressurized suit turning you into a walking submarine
@24tnuhknaks

Is there a way to imitate or replicate the pressure in which the diver is currently in? Wouldn't raising him up to surface kill him should the depth be very deep?

I want to go abroad.

There is so much wrong with the way they are saving the diver.. How can you not even keep his airways free?? You just pull him up or just start climbing over him.. Here in Europe you have to hold him completely vertical, head a bit tilted over and blow up your drysuit a bit so you get buoyant. make sure you have full control over both drysuits and leave bottom..

Dark to light I highly doubt you ever dived for money or even have dived before. It's not as simple as gearing up and diving to the bottom. There is procedures in place as the worst thing you can do is send down diver two/rescue who then needs rescuing. If there is two foot of visibility simply jumping in you are not going to find diver one hence the going through bell and holding hoses etc. This is only a practice scenario. Real scenarios are more likely to be deeper than this and certainly less visibility. The checks are all done for a reason, free flowing the mask to get rid of water, checking the face to see if eyes are open etc because if he is not moving but making facial response you might be able to do decompression stops if needed etc. Last thing you want to do if just yank a diver up to the top on a deep dive, until no other options are left because of divers state.

@@darktolight4363 sounds like the industry lost a such a great influence when you left. Yeah I've never dived commercially but I'm experienced enough to know you don't fuck about and get a big head when it comes to water as the last thing anyone needs is two divers in need of assistance.

Can you please explain to the lay person, through illustration, what happened to the divers who died I. Trinidad and Tobago in Feb 2022? Was it a case of negligence? Or did the company err on the side of safety? Meaning did they try to stop others from dying. Were the lines too Short??
