My physics teacher homeschooled her kid (she taught for fun and once she got her fill of public school she literally went off to NASA) and brought her with her to class on occasion. I honestly always kinda thought this was the case, but there was a group of kids at my university where most of them had been home schooled and they were all really smart and well educated. Met one of the moms at one point and she's prolly one of the toughest teachers I've ever met. She definitely encouraged her kids to go deeper on the subjects they liked most (diving really deep in bio while only getting the needed basics of physics, for escape), but I was honestly still really surprised by how thorough their education was.

That's more eclectic home schooling, which I do. I use various books at different levels based on subject. I adjust the levels and methods as kid needs and play it by ear. We also go by what kind of day kid is having. If it's a constant meltdown/overwhelmed day we stick to easy review work or let it go. If thru are in a great mood we try new concepts. We are currently doing kindergarten grammar/writing, first grade reading and second grade math. Science and history are more child led as that's a special interest for him. My kiddo is neurodiverse and is very much behind because the school system left him behind for years.

@@rachelnorton9394that's EXACTLY right and that's what people don't realize it's 100x HARDER as a parent. I was unschooled, but my daughter just started going to public school. As a mom with a kid in school I be working my ass off and I still can't meet all her needs between 3:30 and bed time. If I could afford a nanny I would have one just so I can meet my own parenting standards. I'm not saying good unschooling moms don't exist I'm just saying my unschool mom was really terrible at it and I can't actually imagine having the level of energy that it would take and also there are things out there that I would like to do with my time every great once in awhile I would like to feel happy and fulfilled as a human sometimes. I think everyone has things they are good at and I think I'm a pretty dang good parent actually but I would love to outsource more and anyone who thinks they are doing a great job unschooling and doesn't have a nanny (or highly involved second, third, fourth parent/family/way more humans than just one parent) is likely living in some level of fantasy. Im sure other people would go about it in different ways but my mother decided to do absolutely nothing, as in she would just let us run around and she would sit inside doing whatever it was she did. I can only really remember a hand full of times she decided to do school stuff, but that was just full of screaming and calling us stupid for not knowing anything. I always just felt so stupid, i didnt get taught to read till i was 11 (by my dad), had no idea what a continent was, no idea how to do math, no idea how to socialize, and honestly just really lonely. I was so isolated i literally didnt know how to act in friendships i eventually got, i would become possesive and overbearing because i was so desperate to just have someone there for me. I know this is satire, but as a former elementary school teacher that partially employed a similar curriculum, this is often a great approach for some kids. For others, a more structured, traditional education is a necessity. I noticed that often the kids who came to my class from a strictly Montessori background were functionally illiterate or unable to use basic math skills due to not being made to learn them. Not necessarily a problem with the curriculum at it’s core, more so with teacher and parental educational neglect. The most important thing for kids to learn is the “why” behind education. School is much harder and more boring when you don’t understand why you have to learn the skills you’re being taught.

Unschool or use Sudbury schools! (Sudbury is an unschooling school style. Also sometimes called a democratic school.) They'll still learn everything they need to, because they'll WANT to learn things that help them achieve their goals, such as to have an enjoyable job that can support them well financially, drive, etc. Except this way, you don't have to FORCE them, so they learn to manage themselves, learn in a way customized to them, learn faster because they are self-motovated, and they never develop an aversion to "learning" or "work" as many schooled kids do. They'll also keep the light in their eyes, the happiness in their smiles, and their love of learning. I wouldn't support this if it hadn't been pioneered before and worked! But it does! Read Unschooling to University to learn how unschooled kids easily get into college (as long as the parent lives learning and puts in the work, too)! If you want a learning community, find a Sudbury school. The only difference between unschooling and Sudbury is that students go to a school property for some of the day and have responsibilities such as cleaning and participating in their democratic school governance. Plus, it can help fund resources, such as books, art supplies, and stuff you can ask for a budget for. Sudbury graduates are consistently more mature, well-spoken, responsible, happier, and more emotionally intelligent and healthy than other students. Their college graduation rate is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than for public schools (80% versus 60% or lower). One of the nice things is that kids learn to put all their energy into whatever they love, and as they mature, that turns into putting energy into work, college, etc. It is truly customized to the unique needs of each student and let's them develop how THEY need. I want to make a Sudbury school in my area.

She also ended up being a super senior meaning she got held back a year, tho it was only half a year because she didnt have enough credits to graduate since she kept failing history & math, so once she passed those classes she graduated Not saying that this is a bad thing to do just saying that if you do do it please make sure that you find fun ways to make everything educational & fun for your children so that way they don’t miss out on important things that could potentially be important should they go into college or if they do end up doing “regular school” at some point

In Illinois homeschooling is not heavily regulated, once your child is out of the public school system the state is no longer involved. Technically you don't even have to officially notify the state that you're homeschooling, we did just to have a record but it's not required.

@@kumi9479 this explains how is possible that there's children who don't ever learn how to read or write and who've never been taught anything. @@kumi9479 good parents will not abuse the system. and that's great. But very many people pull their kids out of schools, and then don't homeschool them and abuse them brutally and because nobody check in on them, nobody ever finds out or they find out after years of torture and abuse. Very often it only comes to light after the child is murdered by the abusers. I'm not saying that our system that controls the curriculum and everything is all that better, but I think there should be at least some sort of check up. To see how the kids are doing and so that it doesn't happen that 16 year olds don't know the alphabet because their parents kept them home but never bothered to teach them anything, which is a thing that happens all the time. I don't think the government should control how or what you teach your children! but if you homeschool there should be a record of it so that it is known these kids are homeschooled, and there should maybe be some sort of system to see if the child wasn't just pulled out of school to hide abuse, and to see if the child is actually being taught anything. I know that there's many great people who homeschool! And I also know that there's many horrible abusers who only pretend to homeschool and who only keep their kids at home so nobody sees the abuse. It is abuse if parents don't physically abuse their kids but don't teach them anything at all, not even how to read or write, and it's preventable. A homeschooling system with zero check ups and zero regulations enables abuse, and I'm sorry but if only one child is saved that's more important to me that not doing a check up on a couple children who are homeschooled by loving parents who care about their education. If someone chose to not teach their child anything, that wouldn't be their business, because that's abuse and people dont have the right to abuse their kid just because it's theirs.

As a mom who has asked this a gazillion times and only received these responses- it is exhausting and infuriating. It feels like no one uses curriculum anymore except me. I found some that I love and I’ve learned to roll with the unexpected but for some of us with less than ideal attention spans or organization skills- curriculum is such a wonderful blessing and the only way I’m able to school my children in an appropriate way. I also hate the idea of the children deciding what to learn. That’s how kids grow up deciding they’re not going to do something just because they don’t want to and it doesn’t suit them for the time. This video should have a trigger warning 😅 I was "unschooled" and I am a gentle parent now. I take extra care to nourish my kid's interests... but being completely honest things would have been A LOT easier for me with some formal education. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I know that I, myself, certainly do not have the level of energy my children deserve when it comes to education. Frankly, my parents did not either. I was often emotionally neglected and when I decided to go to college when I turned 18 it was actually, impossible for me to be successful there at the time and I actally dropped out. I have since dropped out of college four additional times due to difficult life circumstances and have plans to return to school and graduate. As an adult I still have to utilize public services like the food bank and I've actually felt that sex work has been the best option for me at certain times because it has been difficult for me to be successful at more conventional jobs and provide basic needs for myself. I think unschooling is a great idea and I know families that it has "worked" for ( you have to define what would be success versus failure for YOUR family of course, but I REALLY want you to prioritize your children's needs here rather than your own. And, I'm gonna say it, tw, including their social needs. And I think this is worth doing because if you are failing and your children are at risk, you need to know, and be real with yourself, so you can change what you're doing) but I think it's wildly unrealistic for the majority of unschooling families that I have met and my own family. Growing up going to unschooling conferences, camps, and groups, as an adult I recognize a lot of what I consider to be neglect now. As an adult I've discovered that education is actually a value of mine. My kids are highly social and need almost constant social stimulation outside our family. I think if we lived in a intentional community many things would be a lot easier and unschooling would be a lot more realistic. I did my best to find the right community for us and I've come to realize it will be something I am needing to build from the ground up. I work towards that goal every day. I'm not saying that unschooling is wrong what I'm saying is the fundamentals of unschooling don't actually contradict formal education. And to put your children's needs above your own need to be coolest crunchiest mama or at least be transparent with yourself about which of your OWN needs you are meeting by unschooling. My mom was the founder of our local homeschooling group (before she started unschooling when I was about 6) and she was very popular among the crunchiest of unschool moms but when we were at home she didn't live up to her values, didn't consider my needs as an individual, and honestly did not unschool me. And how could she? How could someone really have the time and energy their kids deserve to be THAT present.

To many of the comments, neglect is not unschooling. This is how people who live this lifestyle get a bad reputation just by saying the word. If you unschool, it doesn't mean you send your child off to do whatever or nothing while you live your life and fail to educate them.. it means you educate your child with a philosophy and method unlike public school. You don't sit down for days figuring out which curriculum to use or blend to cover all of the school subjects and tell your child what they have to learn, do, complete that day. You sit down at the beginning of every month and ask your children what they would like to learn that month, what their goals are and how you can assist them. If they don't know, you give them all the options you are aware of and together you make a plan. Children don't have the experience we do and so we still have to guide them, show them resources and how you've best learned to do things etc. And you still participate in educating them. You're just teaching them how to take the lead when they want to learn and accomplish something and you're letting them know that common core philosophy is not the only way to get an education. If you never learn what the fertile crescent is, you won't fail at life.. It isn't neglect or an absence of education. It is a child interest led education perfectly tailored to the individual. Any person or group of people who basically says you aren't unschooling your child unless you let them do whatever they want or essentially neglect them. That is not unschooling. That is a total lie.
