This sweet young man needs to seek help, hoarders don't change overnight. Saving melted wax in a jar or a big bag of paper napkins is a definite sign of hoarding.

This one was actually a bit distressing to watch, because the issue isn't the accumulated junk, it's the mental health issue behind it. Cleaning and renovating this house and moving into another one isn't the answer. Getting some serious therapy is.
He said, "Garbage...garbage...Throw that away." There is hope for him!😁 Once they get a hoarder to start throwing things away the healing has begun! I hope he can keep it up.
I felt so bad for the wife. Sad that he was unable / unwilling to initially ‘make room’ for her in his life. Definitely more to this couple than what we learn in 20 minutes.
I totally laughed when she said if he put the deflated exercise ball into storage she would lose her marbles. Moving the mess to storage is fast but really just moving the crime to a second location.
If Sofie has never seen anything like his clutter, she's never watched "Hoarders". There are underlying reasons (often past trauma) that cause hoarding & the root of that needs to be addressed to help people with this issue.

@@juliearnold5065 So sorry to hear of your loss. I have a good friend whose mother died about a decade ago, and she had the same problem. She couldn't bring herself to get rid of all her mother's things, so she took most of it to her own house.

He needs therapy. This makes me really sad. They literally just moved most of their mess into (paid for) storage. Unfortunately he feels some kind of comfort in the chaos. He was very uncomfortable in the nice, neat "sold" house they visited. So sad...
I'm new to the series. Why were there a few episodes where Anthony was gone and Sofia looked a like she'd gained weight? Did she take an extended maternity leave and they had to wait for his contract somewhere else to be finished?
I don't understand why they were still selling that house. It's beautiful and spacious, and their mess had been sorted. She should have told him: "When you make room for me, I'll come back." He needs to learn that NOTHING ARRIVES BY ITSELF AND NOTHING LEAVES BY ITSELF.
I don't know if this guy is a hoarder or not - but living in the same place for 9 years can definitely make some one pile up a lot of junk without realising it. I had to move every year for a few years and each time I was surprised at how much crap I had accumulated in just a year. It was only after the third such move that I made a conscious effort to not buy junk and get rid of things I didn't need as soon as possible. I've lived in the same place for 8 years now, and I love how empty the place is! A friend once told me her goal was to get to 2 suitcases of stuff only. I don't think I'll ever get there, but it doesn't hurt to aim for it.

The transformation is one of the best I've seen them do, I think. I couldn't believe ALL THAT JUNK packed into that small space, geez! I can't believe, though, that she didn't know her husband had a real issue with being a hoarder BEFORE she married him - or was she never ever inside his home before they got married? I find that hard to believe, unless she was some kind of mail-order bride or it was a family arranged marriage and they only saw each other at her parents' home with 20 people watching every move they made!
Boy do I know how this feels.....My husband ( a second marriage) was a collector...When we met his apartment was stufffed in but I thought it was because he only had one bedroom and he had all his camping gear in there. The first time I bought a smaller home with NO basement and a pole barn so he could not fill up a basement full of his gear. (Little did I know that he had a ton of belongings "farmed" his out in his friend barn, and another basement and then later on he drove and picked this stuff all up -OH NO!.) Then he filled up the pole barn from bottom to top....After 20 years of working to get rid of his stuff we downsized and I moves us to a 1.200 condo with no basement and a single car garage....that was the only thing that worked!!
"If you haven't used it in the last 6 months, it goes" Try 1 year. I am not going to throw out my winter stuff just because I'm decluttering in the summer.
Fulton is a hoarder in process. A therapist can help him understand why he is holding onto this junk. Having an emotional attachment to THINGS - as in ""everything you own," is a red flag. When those things become more important than your partner's happiness, there is a big issue to be resolved. And all that excess just went into storage - which means it can always migrate back.
Great transformation, very nice. $100 says 90% of what was removed and put in that truck at 12:30 will be in their new house. The wife is stuck in a lifetime battle - and wait until kids show up OMG.
He has that non-reactive hoarder affect and needs counseling. If not I feel he'll just hoard the next house. I wonder if they're still married. The "after" house is unrecognizable. Very nice.
Taking away a horder's belongings isn't really going to help him with the issue, rather--it'll probably make it worse once they get into a new home. Hording is essentially an emotional coping mechanism, they feel protection in their belongings and being able to say what is done with them... In a sense they "hide" under all the junk. So take away someone's hiding spot by force and they'll probably build it up again as soon as they can. The house does look incredibly improved by decluttering but I'm just saying this is a temporary solution and won't solve the underlining issue.
I suspected from the initial reason stated in the beginning......we are selling to declutter and start over...Now they don’t have to go and I bet they didn’t! This guy has a serious hoarding issue....feel sorry for his wife. Miss the updates at the end saying the house sold...what? Did they stop selling? LOL
There’s WAY deeper issues here!! The poor wife is in for a wake up call!!! Selling the house and starting “fresh” is not going to solve the problem! He’s a hoarder!!!
He definitely has a hoarding or other problem if he isn’t embarrassed to have people in that house AND on television. Having that much stuff laying around everywhere isn’t normal. I hope his wife can encourage him to get help.
IF, and I mean IF this couple is still married, I 100% guarantee you that the new home they bought together is a complete horrific mess. Hoarding is an illness and very difficult to overcome. If she has decided to stay with him, she will have to accept the fact that he is a hoarder and a life of chaos.
He sees/feels an emptiness in the sold house that is their competition. That's his psychological problem that is bordering on hoarding. He seems to feel insecure without lots of his things close around, hugging him, in essence. I wonder if she is aware of this. If not, that marriage will not last.
Oh I have NO doubt they’re divorced. He was devastated how this went. His mental health was not only not addressed, they did everything that harms a hoarder. His mental health was not addressed (wrong show) He was mocked, put down, and worse. He looked like he was going to cry the whole show. He will fill a new house. Bless his heart. I hope he got the help he needed
Oh my! I've only just heard the opening statements, and I know that the designer/contractor will have their work cut out for them. I wish I could say that I've never met an 'objects horder" who is this young...but I have. I just didn't realize at the time that there 'was' such a thing. She was 25 yrs. at the time of acquaintance; we worked together.. When this young woman had a wreck and emergency surgery that required re-coup time, I, along with 3 of the other girls, went to her house to see what we could do to help; we also knew she had pets as well, and so we were concerned overall. We spent all day in one room.. We decided on the bedroom because that's where she would settle once home. It was---memorable. The work, and the accumulation of 'stuff' included empty pizza boxes and take-out boxes of fried chicken, etc..., dun notices for un-paid bills...sigh. Well, we were determined and got it manageable. The only things we put in the dumpster were the food-related boxes. We organized in a reasonable way, nothing dramatic so as to seem as if we were one-upping her situation. We were thoughtful. Still, she was so angry when she got to come home. She appreciated the clean bed, but--AND HERE'S THE LESSON I LEARNED--what may seem like helping to one person, to another--without express permission, the help will not be welcome. ☺ I felt bad, we all did really, that we had not considered that our gesture would be insulting to her...sigh.. She did, though, appreciate the clean litter boxes and cats cared for...Always ask, and then--ask again.. But I expect most already knew this. Again. Lesson learned.
I would have been grateful since you only threw out trash. I have little trash but mounds of stuff to be gone through, given away or organized. I have put off health care because of it. It is so embarrassing. You were all so nice to help.

I had a friend who was like this from his 20’s. I cleaned up his apartment and he went nuts. He bought a gorgeous, modern four bedroom home. It had to be demolished because his hoard overtook it. It’s an illness.
I helped a friend for many years and helped her move three times, it was always the same: too much stuff and collections. Christmas decorations for different themes, two Christmas threes, several sets of plates, tons of pillows and comforters, tons of make up, it was never ending. Among all the clutter was trash, stained and dusty papers, even some pet waste.Every time she moved, she moved into smaller dwellings. I helped her make some editing decisions but it never solved the problem. Each time I visited her: no place to sit down, table full of stuff and garbage, fruit flies, dirty dishes. I really liked this person, she was good company but eventually I got bedbugs from one of her visit. My husband almost went crazy! Lucky we caught the problem early, but I never invited my friend again at my home. I rarely see her now, she was asking for help all the time and I didn't want to get bed bugs again. I dont regret helping her but I won't do it again. It gave me a personal experience with hoarder and I watch myself not to become like that.
The fact that the husband refused to get rid of crap to make room for his new wife to move in is a really bad sign that this guy will make a lousy husband. He's too selfish and self-centered to be married. This poor girl should run as fast as she can from this adult child.
Yep. My hubby is a hoarder too and his home looked even worse when I moved in, but he never complained about my throwing his stuff out. It took me 7 days to remove all the clutter, after that his Dad came over and said "Wow, this is a gorgeous dining table! I have never seen it before!" :))))))
I think his mother babied him because work seemed foreign to him and he really didn't know what to do until he was told - His wife has her work cut out for her
I can't help but wonder the same. I wouldn't consider myself necessarily a "hoarder" but I have extreme trouble motivating myself to clean and keep clean. Throwing things away is.. Well I might need them! Lmao! But I seriously I do think that my absolute lack of discipline and chores while growing up has heavily contributed to this. Both my parents are horrible with clutter too; when they divorced and I moved in with my dad..after 1 year on his own he had accumulated so much junk that his two bedroom had become one. The junk was half wall height, and he slept on the couch so I had a room. I remember being home from school once and I was digging through it all, found a birthday card (to me!) with $50 in it from my grandmother 🤦

I would say that 'we need to buy a new house and start fresh' is right up there with 'lets have a baby to save our marriage.' Unless they fix what's actually wrong (his hoarding), they are going to have the same old problems just in a new location. There are signs of hope in the episode, sure, but he definitely needed therapy. I hope he got some, considering how old this show is.
3 bedrooms, enclosed porch, large kitchen, why is that not a house that is big enough for 2 adults,? Homes in Canada sure are higher priced than homes in many cities in the US. And smaller. Good storage space created with the built-in cabinet on the porch. Great results for a very sellable house.
In that area of Toronto, officially the old Village of Swansea, that house, with a mutual drive and garage, is easily 1.5 MILLION now. Even then, this house was seriously under valued for the area. Even in that state, it should have sold in under 2 weeks. Houses in good shape had a routine. For Sale sign up Wednesday. Agents' Open House Thursday and Friday. Public Open House Saturday and Sunday. Home inspectors/bank appraisers in on Monday. Offer Day on Tuesday. Usually Sold sign up Wednesday. 8 days, start to finish. Final price normally something between 10 and 25% over asking. I grew up there and saw it happen about the time this show was filmed. Too bad someone decided to replace the original Arts and Crafts woodwork with modern crap. There is no way a hollow core pressed wood door with such miserly, miserable mouldings should be in this house. The original would have been 8-10 in base boards, 6-8 inch door casings, and likely 4 panel solid wood doors. Sophie did the best she could with what she had to work with.

Yes, he 'did' say that he felt a bit ashamed that his wife never got to enjoy the house....I feel he showed humility in expressing this. I know he must have also expressed this privately as well to his beautiful wife, and I am glad for their new life-opportunities working with "Unsellables" gave them.
she should not trust it. this kind of hoarding is a form of OCD and his remorse may be genuine but decluttering it is not a cure. It will return. been there done that. the relationship did not last.

The creative side of my personality says to use a bedroom to make a home office area that will have built in organization spaces similar to what was built in the sunroom. I think if wife will use encouraging tone of voice and work with her husband to get anger management classes and EMDR therapy? They'll be able to find common ground.
They want something BIGGER to raise kids in? How many are they planning on having? If they'd throw away the junk, they'd have room for half a dozen, at least.

I guess, you missed the emotional attachment to all of his inanimate objects - that has nothing to do with cleaning up a place, it has everything to do with hoarding objects since he can't donate or throw them out. Look at his reactions. And, hear what he said about the comparable house ... wife says it nice, Fulton says it's empty.
I feel sorry for his wife, having to live with his JUNK! Hopefully, he learned his lesson. Women like to live like, it's there Castle, no matter the size.
First of all, he needs to recognize his behaviour requires therapy. His lesson is to seek out that therapy. I'm sure the wife thought she could change him but that obviously failed. To start up a family under this scenario is not good.
No, just to be gentle with Fulton, and use encouraging tone of voice to get him happy and prepared to get reorganized for the move! Going thru his stuff will probably take cycles, until he can accept having less stuff. I can tell that he's been thru some trauma, bc I've been there too. They should hire a designer for their new space like Sophie so they can start of right. Beautiful furniture doesn’t help if you don’t know where to put it. And Fulton will need a lot of storage.
Maybe we need a business where you can "rent" junk for a hoarder and he won't need his own. Then, when you move, you can return all the junk and get your deposit back...?
