Time for hydro assist!
This 80 series Land Cruiser needs more mods!
Last week we did the competition, but those videos will be on the ONX RU-vid channel. This week I want to work my way through some more details and test them on the trail.
I want a sleeping platform, a roof rack and build out a homemade hydro assist steering system.
Enjoy the video!

Go to Harbor Freight, pick up the double garage door screen, each panel is about 8' X 8', it has magnets on 1 edge (middle), use it to screen the back of your rig so you can leave hatch and back windows open at night, cut other panel to cover door windows. Bug free fresh air sleeping.

I have to admit I started watching this series because I love land cruisers, but I stayed because I have learned something useful in every video so far. I can't believe I never thought to strap my spare tire upright in the back like that!

Take the reservoir apart (It is serviceable so it does come apart) and gut the OEM filter inside of it and just run the separate inline filter that you have already. that should give you a bit more capacity and flow with less restriction.

Dude, great suggestion! I didn't know these had an internal filter, so I appreciate the info 🙌

Looking forward the Onyx videos coming up Nate! You asked so my opinion on the back setup would be to swap the spare & bed to the opposing sides. Reason being is better visibility with the tire directly behind you as opposed to Looking over /around it. Looks like a very capable rig capable though!👍👍
@paulcleary8137

You could cut the reservoir in half, weld in some exhaust pipe to make it taller for more volume. I've done it on a few FJ60 power steering reservoirs.

I think I would put a barrier behind the front seats to stop all the stuff from coming forward into the area where the driver is in a rollover. There are nylon webbing that would work well. The sleeping platform looks good but a simpler sleeping arrangement would simply be a exped mega mat self inflating mattress. These mattresses are awesome and inflate to 4”. You can get their small pump to inflate it to the hardness you want. Awesome build.

It's so cool seeing a youtuber messing around on washington trails. While I've never been to Evans Creek, my older brother used to go out there to mess around in his 84 Bronco. I wonder if you guys ever ran into each other out there. 04 would be kind of close to when he was out there. He also used to go do the mud drags, my favorite picture was him up against a lifted cadillac. I had a 78 bronco that ended up leaving my possession due a bad trade deal but I dreamed of taking to a place live Evans and just cruising around.

Little tip that might be useful, I have a very very similar setup in my 100 series and I get into bed from the drivers seat, can take my boots off leave them on the drivers floor and then climb through easier and don’t have to close the rear door, then in morning can climb into drivers seat put boots on and step out, no mess, no shoes on bed, all easy

@mikehjelseth4651
@mikehjelseth4651 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, 519 has a "waterfall" of sorts that flexes rigs out pretty good. Probably, the hardest obstacle at Evans. Up or down is fun. Took a guy from SoCal up there a few weeks in a nicely equipped JKUR on 37s. He said he liked rocks, it freaked him out a bit to start, but he was pumped after he ran through it.

Glad to hear you get to keep this rig in the end, was afraid all teams would be forced to give the vehicles to OnX or something. Been watching you since the bleepinjeep days building low buck diesel truck series and remember you talking about wanting to do a Landcruiser build when you started the Disco build and now it's great to see you finally have it and it's yours.
@marlene1453
@marlene1453 10 месяцев назад
It would cost OnX way to much money to keep all the vehicles. Shipping, storage, then add in the maintenance for customized rigs. Liability issues more than likely would keep them from selling the trucks to recup extra cash. If anything there could be a one year contract clause allowing OnX to retain the vehicle for shows, promotions and advertisements.

Perfect timing. I was just looking at my 79 F-150 lifted Supercab longbed 4x4, with BBF 460 with 34's that needs more assist than the power-steering pump and gearbox it has. I was looking at the tie-rod shock absorber and wondering how to install a ram there to lessen the stresses on the pitman arm and single shear linkage. Perfect! thank you. PS, its not a rock crawler but more a over-lander camper with a rear hitch mounted motorcycle carrier.

Nate, consider getting some kind of a 1/2 tent to attach/hang off the back. That way, you will have some privacy/space to change clothes while standing up. If not that, at least get some kind of screen or net to go over the back. Otherwise, you're going to get eaten alive by bugs at night.

Hello from the coast right outside of Galveston, Texas. At 55y/o with my bilateral bad knee's and lumbar back issues. No way I could climb up into that bed to lay down without waking up the whole forest..lol Do luv your Lexus build. Way to go. Iv'e really enjoyed all the videos. I was thinking. You should construct a removable, maybe 3/16" plate, metal hinged folding step that you could hook onto the drivers side rock slider when in camp, so that you can crawl into that drivers side back door to lay down. Would be a lot easier then going in from the cargo hatch, spinning around and then laying down.

Man I just got “done“ with a three weekend long header back exhaust build on my ‘91 80 series. What a slog it was. Got metal in my eye that sent me to the eye Dr for removal, and smashed the hell out of my right thumb. Also crawling under a car a few hundred times with out a lift is not as comfortable as it was when I was 20. It’s a bit loud, have a different muffler showing up, but it’s finally done 😅. Now I just have to replace the header gasket again after I destroyed it, and do the hundreds of other things this old girl needs 😂 happy to see you enjoying your Cruiser. Can’t wait till mine is more functional.
