Thank you Prof. Garth. This lecture helped me a lot in clearing my basic doubts about the composites. I would also suggest you to post your lectures on Micro mechanics and Macro mechanics if possible. Thank you once again sir!

Extremely informative and well-presented - thank you! But, somehow the Q12 and Q22 terms seemed to have been switched at ~2:14 from what they had been shown at ~1:19 and the Excel sample at ~1:34.

Would be great to see correlation between these derivations and calculations with Test data.

How important multiscale technique is to predict failure of composite materials? In practice, do engineers prefer classical analysis approach? Or, are they also considering multiscale techniques?

Do you have any good resources for calculating the mechanical properties of a woven lamina (like twill weave) ? instead of a unidirectional lamina. Thank you

There´s just a minor error, on the slide at 1:30:31, with the LHS of the matrix in 2nd matrix equation [(6x1 = (4x4)(4x1)], isn´t there?
@AerospaceStructures
@AerospaceStructures 9 лет назад
Liv Yi It is 6x1 = (6x4)(4x1) There are six separate rows in the matrix. Daniel and Ishai is a really great book for this analysis. www.amazon.com/Engineering-Mechanics-Composite-Materials-Daniel/dp/019515097X

I've read it is wrong to bond carbon fiber to fiberglass because they have different strain resulting in one failing before the other. Also, I've seen hard points(metal bushings) embedded in fiberglass and carbon fiber. Is this a bad practice? I've seen holes drilled into a carbon fiber spar and bushings embedded for hard points. Is this a bad practice?
@nickcook7408
@nickcook7408 2 года назад
Very bad practice indeed. We lay the metal hard points for bushes and fixings etc in the very beginning stages when the fabric is being layer in the mold. To lay it, cure it, bake it etc and then cut holes out of the media is entirely the wrong way to go about things. On the other hand, I work with guys who are very worried about tenths of grams and thousandths of seconds so we really have to output the closest-to-perfect items imaginable. If you’re making decorations and toys and items that dont have the ability to make or break billion plus pound contracts, you can treat it like plastic and drill and cut whatever you want because it’s not that important. Judge it on a case by case basis.

Is there anyone working on how to create low density, flexible and strong tensile materials to improve earthquake resilience in construction?

How come no one noticed the error at 2:00:15 slide, line 3(shear strain). The dx, dy must be interchanged for the first two terms(Uo,Vo)

Not a lot of people understand shear. The transition from elastic to plastic goes over most of their heads.
