🍟 Loved that you mentioned also the realities of medicine. I think sometimes it can be seen as this path of sunshine and rainbows but in reality and speaking to many people in medicine, it’s a quasi-purgatory for most of it. I think it takes a lot of commitment and sacrifice to finally get to your dream job. And mad respects to any medical student to comes out the other end. I’ve heard from many doctors that getting into specialty training is even harder than getting into medicine itself 😬

Hiii, 1) do you know what atar and ucat scores students got last year who got into unsw med? 2) in medical school do you learn more chemistry, further than highschool chemistry or is it mostly biology related? 3) could you explain the process of medschool like what you do in each year and what you do after medschool? 4) how is the marking and grading in medschool? is it pass or fail or is it numbered? 5) im applying straight from highschool so what extracurriculars would you recommend I do? do you think me doing volunteering at a hospital is good? Please let me know, Thank you so much :D

hey Stacy, 1) no but unsw med has the stats like median atar + selection rank - just search 'unsw med 2023 median selection rank statistics' 2&3) in year 1 + 2 we learn stuff divided into body systems (gastro, cardio, neuro, msk) and disciplines (anatomy, histology, pathology, pathophys, microbiology, biochem etc) then year 3 onwards we repeat the content in less time with clinical layers built on top ie in the context of patients presenting with symptoms (we call this cases). i didnt do biology in year 12 so not sure but i think not much chemistry tbh. what i learnt in high school didn't really help me at all haha, most concepts were new to me. basically you learn about the human body, its mechanisms and processes in normal vs diseases/conditions and learn what happens. the disciplines all kind of tie together. year4 is rsearch. year 5+6 is mostly clinical learning, learning skills and preparing for internship so going to hospital, being assigned to a team (eg geris, cardio, gastro, surg, obgyn) and following them for a term, learning to do intern jobs (cannulas, bloods etc) 4) unsw is pass/fail so get over 50 and you're good but you still get numbered marks. eg you'll know if you got like 50 or 80 but both are a pass mark in the bigger scheme of things. assignments + clinical skills are graded via the F/P-/P/P+ scale which is later converted to a numerical mark using an algorithm unknown to us haha 5) any extracurricular that you will enjoy, are passionate about, can develop skills (not just for med, but for life) and can talk about in an interview volunteering at hospital is good, but need to think of how to differentiate yourself from other candidates in an interview. eg if 100 people volunteer at a hospital, how are you gonna tell your story in such a way that they want to choose you? best of luck with hsc & applying! hope english paper 1+2 wasn't too terrible! let me know if you have any questions & definitely notify me if you get into unsw med :))

I think you may be asking about something called non standard entry - yes can get in but unsw requires minimum atar 96 You also need to sit the UCAT
