Tangled #7 | Untangling Our Speech | 05/19/24
Dr. Larry Baucom delivers the seventh installment of our clarifying “Tangled” series where the mess of beliefs that have too long kept people in the dark are un-tangled. This teaching helps to clarify the meaning of Jesus’ words, “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:... All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this is unsound.” (Mt. 5:33-37). From that text, the sermon unfolds with 3 poignant points.
Point 1: Promise less and deliver more.
After revealing the biblical origins of oaths, Pastor explains the foundation of Jesus’ correction as a call to integrity. Oaths are temporary arrangements but truth and integrity are an ongoing lifestyle. “How do I begin a life of integrity? Recognize God in your life…, Begin to live with him…, Be honest.”
Pont 2: Our speech is a reflection of who we are.
Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45)
Dr. Baucom points out that the more unreliable we are the more we need to call upon the credibility of others. We don’t need to invoke God to be believable if we are credible enough to be trusted. Pastor says, “If my speech is a reflection of who I am, Lord help me to speak more thoughtfully, respectfully, and lovingly.”
Point 3: Keep it honest and keep it simple.
“Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No’.” Living with integrity and speaking honest, thoughtful, and loving words avoids the tangled complexity that comes with a life of dishonest, selfish, manipulation. Pastor Larry cites Dr. Anthony Campolo’s survey of 50 elderly individuals 95 years and older who were asked how they would change their lives if they could start over. Three major themes arose from their answers:
Take more time to reflect on their lives and appreciate what they had…
Take more calculated risks realizing that what they used to see as successes and failures were less important than the opportunities missed…
Doing more that would live on after they were gone. Being remembered for the lasting good they did for others…
Concluding, Dr. Baucom exhorts us with these poignant words:
Don’t let life pass you by!
Learn from others!
Live each day with intention!
Be honest with yourself and others!
Love your family, and follow your dreams!
Do your best to leave the world a better place!
