I'm a 33-year-old male from Karachi, and although I wasn't born back then, I've heard this story countless times. It's stuck with us and taught us to be ready for tough times. Your story was insightful, but it missed some bits. Let me tell you what happened where my grandparents and dad lived. Our place was in Drigh Road Area near Natha Khan Goth (Pushtoon Area). On that day, attackers attacked houses on our street. Their aim? To grab everything they could or burn what they couldn't. Our families fought back. They fired into the air for 2-3 days, this tactics gave attackers the message that we were armed till teeth, this happened till the rangers and army showed up. Thankfully, we were able to defend our street, except for a few homes, that were looted and burned at the start. Thanks to Allah, no one got hurt. But then came the bad part. Instead of acknowledging our efforts for saving people in our street, the police took all our licensed weapons, leaving us defenseless for months, when they returned our weapons back, they were made useless. Interestingly, on the other side the attackers had so much weapon that they use to bury it in Drigh Road grave yard, and people use to find them long after this incident.

MQM and APMSO both were created in reaction to the atrocities happening at that time with Muhajirs. Be it Pashtuns led by Ayub Khan’s son Gohar ayub attacking Muhajirs at Lalukhet, Quota System riots where police attacked Muhajirs, Qasba Aligarh massacre, Pakka Qila Massacre, 1988 Hyderabad Massacre, Sohrab Goth Massacre, Kati Pahari(Banaras) Massacre and the list goes on. Then Army led operation against MQM in 1992-94 then Rangers and Police led operation in 95-97 and so on. Killing more than 25 thousand MQM leaders,supporters,workers. Every Family have at least 1 member killed by LEAs in Karachi specially and other urban cities of Sindh too.

Bravo for digging up the history and bringing it up now as most people are not aware of it and blame Altaf Hussain and MQM solely for their retaliation against other ethnicities, Muhajirs were cornered and pushed against the wall long before Altaf Hussain was even born since Ayub Khan's attacking Fatima Jinnah and then followed by biased and discriminatory mindset of Zulfiqar Bhutto.

وہ زمانہ مجھے بھی اچھی طرح یاد ہے، لیکن آپ حیران ہوں گے کہ اس وقت بھی عائشہ منزل میں موجود تبلیغی جماعت کے مرکز میں شب جمعہ کا اجتماع باقاعدہ ہوتا تھا، جس میں کوئی پٹھان ' کوئی مہاجر، سندھی، پنجابی، بلوچ، کشمیری نہیں، بلکہ صرف مسلمان ہوتے تھے، نہ صرف پورے پاکستان سے جماعتوں کا آنا جانا تھا بلکہ دنیا کے باقی ملکوں کی جماعتیں بھی ہوتی تھیں.

Very informative and excellent content! I was a school boy in Karachi during the 80's. It was really terrifying, Qasba & Surjani were assumed to be known as a war zone for people living in DHA and Clifton. We always thought that MQM is anti Pakistan and root cause behind all the evil. In 90's PMLN campaign was so strong, and I remember the people in my constituency voted for PMLN like it is a sort of Holly war, and PPP is anti Pakistan. But, all that I know is that my childhood and the childhood of so many other school going kids got spoiled due to terror, which caused trauma, we never thought of so-called "Na Maloom Afrad" were the actual evil force behind those miseries. It continued.. when I went to my college, MQM and Haqiqi dominance got started. I mean, how unfortunate! It continued.. When I went to university, Target Killings, kidnapping & snatching were at its peak. It continued.. until I left Pakistan forever ever! Still, I love my city, but honestly, if you spend time outside the country, where you know your rights, law and order situation, morality among the people, ownership of their city, and respect between all the classes. You never wanted to go back to Pakistan, especially Karachi. It is a sad reality, but this is how it is..
