In Indian mythology, there are seven immortals known as Chiranjivis who are believed to still be alive and wandering the earth. These Chiranjivis possess special powers and are revered for their eternal existence. Here is a full explanation of each of the seven immortals:
Ashwatthama: Ashwatthama is a character from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. He was the son of Dronacharya, the royal guru of the Kauravas and Pandavas. Ashwatthama is known for his prowess in warfare and his involvement in the Kurukshetra War. Despite being cursed by Lord Krishna to wander the earth in immense pain for his role in the war, Ashwatthama is considered immortal and is believed to still exist.
Maharaja Bali: Maharaja Bali, also known as Mahabali or Bali Chakravarthi, was a benevolent and powerful king in Hindu mythology. He was the grandson of Prahlada and a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Bali's story is primarily associated with the festival of Onam in Kerala, where he is revered for his virtues and sacrifice. Despite being sent to the netherworld (Patala) by Lord Vishnu in his Vamana avatar, Bali is considered immortal.
Vyasa: Vyasa, also known as Vedavyasa or Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa, is a revered sage and author of the Mahabharata, one of the longest epic poems in the world. He is also credited with compiling and classifying the Vedas. Vyasa's immortality is attributed to his divine status as a sage and his significant contributions to Hindu scriptures and knowledge.
Hanuman: Hanuman is a central figure in the Hindu epic Ramayana and is worshipped as a deity known for his devotion, strength, and loyalty to Lord Rama. He is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva's Rudra avatar. Hanuman's immortality stems from his divine nature and his eternal service to Lord Rama.
Vibhishana: Vibhishana is a character from the Ramayana and is known as the younger brother of Ravana, the antagonist of the epic. However, Vibhishana sided with Lord Rama during the battle against Ravana due to his righteousness and devotion to dharma. After the war, Vibhishana was appointed as the king of Lanka. He is considered immortal due to his association with Lord Rama and his virtuous actions.
Kripacharya: Kripacharya is a revered warrior and teacher in the Mahabharata. He served as the guru of the Kauravas and Pandavas, imparting his knowledge of warfare and ethics to them. Despite his mortal life in the epic, Kripacharya is considered immortal as one of the Chiranjivis.
Parashurama: Parashurama is the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu and is known as a fierce warrior with an axe (parashu) as his primary weapon. He is often depicted as a Brahmin warrior who eliminated corrupt Kshatriya rulers to uphold dharma. Parashurama's immortality is due to his divine status as an avatar of Vishnu and his eternal presence in Hindu mythology.
These seven immortals, known as Chiranjivis, are revered figures in Hindu mythology, symbolizing different virtues, skills, and divine attributes. Their stories continue to inspire and captivate believers and devotees across generations.
