Untouched Wooden Headframes in the Desert

Quick offroading trip to this former copper and tin mine. This particular mine operated from 1939 to 1944 and newer signs of work indicated revival in the 1960's. The large wooden headframe is not only unique in that it's largely intact and has multiple tiers, but also the presence of a jaw crusher at the way top now gone unfortunately. Lots of awesome surface infrastructure at this site, I just wish I could have gotten into more shafts. Hope you guys enjoy this one!

you're in our backyard now sonny Jim ..... Kokoweef is right around the corner so you might see us out there digging ....that was a Tin mine ...never explore the shaft ...great looking headframe .... they actually used a skip bucket and the locks you see are for the trunnions.... really impressed you made it to the top ....the drill pattern at the sup is call a fan or wedge cut ...so as to remove the waster rock first ...over by the collapsed building is a much deeper shaft where they were getting their ore ....good explore .... be safe out there and keep'em coming

“Gly”: Very nice! I was in that area a few weeks ago and I knew it was gated so I didn’t drive over there. Thanks for the tour, it was nice to see it up close. 👍

I think the little containers are ash urns. My sister wore one around her neck and it contained some ashes of my late brother-in-law. That might coincide with the bigger container, possibly an urn.

You are way more daring then me! I would be terrified climbing to the top of that old rotten head frame. Very interesting place though

It's amazing how long stuff lasts in the desert! I'm from the Midwest and have never been to the West but channels like yours have my interest peaked and I will definitely be visiting sometime. I know you probably hear this too much but I hope you have plenty of survival equipment brother because being in the places you have alone is a big ball sport!

Hi Jerith, two very cool headframes, that was a very intriguing find at the bottom of that 1st headframe though, I wonder what it could be. I hope you had an amazing Christmas and I hope you have a fantastic 2023, thank you for sharing, much love. xx ❤

That is a well known and often visited tin and tungsten mine. A 1952 mining publication says the main shaft is 740 feet deep. I have Chinese artifacts that were found in caves/old mines in the New York Mtns south of this mine. I was told these were from 1880's railroad construction workers.

There is an old head frame like that in Jerome Arizona. There are so many abandoned mines in the hills around the Prescott area also. I would be more than willing to take you to those old mine shafts. I don't know how safe they are to enter.

The metal bowl and other items look to be Chinese-type stuff. The Chinese were prevalent during the mining periods up to and past the second world war. That's what some of the stuff looks like to me, anyway.

So I’m a little confused about the machinery of a head frame. After the flywheel would it be attached directly to the winch would there be something else after the wheel in before the winch?

I'm by no means knowledgable but I think those small containers might be Jewish prayer containers called Mezuzahs for holding passages from the Torah. The other object is missing the handle on top. But I'm just guessing. The bigger mystery is what the heck they're doing there!
