Female Karate Blackbelt Gets EXPOSED By Untrained Man. This blackbelt champion fights an untrained street fighter in an organised fight. Although the rules of the fight are not clear. It's one example of how sport martial arts does not cross over into real fighting and self defence training.

It has nothing to do with a "male ego" - I study Wing Chun as well, and that dancing around is going to have you off balance and on the ground as soon as she dances in and I move to meet and bridge. The fact is he clearly wasn't about to go all out and smash her one. Hence she "kept him at bay". If he wanted her teeth down her throat, he could've easily done so. She did a really good job of holding him off. I thought his general strength and speed would overwhelm her but she fought smart. I think if she could strike him in the head and kick him hard in the solar plexus she could stun him long enough to get to a crowded area. If he catches up she could keep striking and moving until help arrives. She has enough fighting skills to keep him from bum rushing her.

Despite having a black belt in TKD! I started training in the late 70s, I realized that my main goal was to be a well-trained fighter. Thus, I also trained in Judo, Juijitisu, not the BJJ style, and boxing. I briefly, went into kickboxing. I never cared for point fighting, I realized it gives a false sense of security! Many martial artists possess a belief that the Kata practices and point style of fighting have prepared them to handle any violent encounter on the streets. I saw the danger of that mindset early in my training. As a cop, my skills were tested against violent individuals who had nothing to lose. During my career as a cop, I was grateful that I had the withal to see the shortcomings in point fighting and realized the benefit of being an all-around good fighter who can handle a street encounter where weapons are not involved!

"Fight Science" is correct, dude. In real life...YOUR ATTACKER WILL NOT BE IN YOUR WEIGHT CLASS. They'll be bigger, or they'll bring their friends and/or use a weapon. If your technique requires the guy to be in your weight class....you will have difficulty using it in real life. You have to spar with much larger people and learn how to deal with it.

One thing to keep in mind is that she's not thinking about Self Defense, but about proving something. The points about her fighting philosophy are well-taken, but a well-trained martial artist has a strong foundation for self-defense! Look at her footwork, endurance, skill at striking, and lack of fear of a combat situation. Her good footwork and distance management makes her less likely to get sucker punched in the street, so she could be taught to use her striking skills to quickly strike the eyes, throat, groin, etc., and then run! You can see she has good stamina because of her training, and cardio and conditioning may be another part of that. So some fast unexpected strikes to some sensitive areas would probably shock her attacker and give her time to escape. So in closing, I think a good martial artist has the building blocks for a nice transition to self-defense.

Good point about point fighting styles. Had a shotokan guy come into our kyokushin dojo and ask to spar. He lunged at me with a punch to the stomach, then stopped and said, “I won, you would be on the ground if I really hit you’. Our instructor said, “do it again and him full power”. I've always been a big fella, so for his demonstration he chose me. I've fought all of my young life at the time. He asked me to go for him. Then he would show us how to defend & disarm me, I went forward side stepped & put him on his arse. No no you don't do it like that. To which I was surprised. He then said I could attack him as violently as I wanted. I was frightened, but a cocky 18 year old he grabbed me, spun me around, and put me in a choke hold. I just threw my head back and caught him on the nose he let go. I got a bollocking for not attacking him properly 😢.

Been in a few pub brawls back in my days and only two things I will say about them: One- There is a gentlemen unwritten rule that when the opposition is down it stops, even saw ambulances called in the end to prevent any major injuries. Second- A street fight or brawl is absolutely not what you expect, no rules other than it being a duel and no referee to stop anything going wrong. When you have a 350 pound hooligan charging into you as his first move, grabbing you mid dash and both of you crashing on the nearest solid object is enough to silent almost anyone training or not. Moral of the story is: "Just do not do it because no plan survives contact with the enemy"

@Fightscience , Former Karate-ka here. I have very strong issue with the way that Karate has taken long ago - the sporty-dancing way. Most of the schools are going for the sport side, most of the students join in to get to those competitions. But that's how it should be approached - as a sport. Like olympic fencing. That also has very little to do with real fencing. But there are schools that continue in the actual applied Karate. I used to study my whole childhood and teens in such. We were forbidden to participate in any sort of competitions, studied human anatomy (muscles, skeleton, blood/lymphatic/neural systems, etc.) and under a very strict discipline. And if we had a free fight for the sake of training with each other it was always so different from what you see in Karate competitions that made me sometimes wonder "what are those guys on the screen doing". Technically, it's like comparing Kendo with Kenjutsu... the former is "strike to score a point", the latter is "strike to kill". If the teacher is adequate, that is.

Training in sport karate is safer so teachers don't risk the health of their students which at the end of the day, are the resource to pay the bills. He said he had, and said he responded with his best technique, a roundhouse to the head I think he said. It didn’t work, so he resorted to “dirty fighting” which he said he was ashamed of. Actually he responded with good self defense moves which he should have been proud of. A martial artist skilled in self defense is also a “street fighter.” I read about a world class karate champion who was in his car in NYC and was confronted by someone on the street. He got out of his car and the man stabbed him and killed him. I’m guessing his karate skills made him over confident and careless.

Really the largest issue she has as you said a dozen times over, is point scoring. Jumping off the ground to give your opponent a fly tap isn't going to do much else than piss him off, let alone take away your structure from the ground. Had she strung together combinations, working what was in range to her like body shots and leg kicks to work him down she might have down better. She also could have done better with conserving energy and tightening her guard, and, obviously having BJJ under her.

Your comment is one of the very few that doesn't have the "she is woman, and woman is bad" undertone to it. I feel like an actual female fighter or at least someone who was really trying to hurt someone and not worry about points would have at the very least held their own against this guy.

@@lemon9974 I feel that it's worth mentioning that women do have an inherit physical disadvantage when going up against men. Things like muscle composition, muscle density, and especially in this case, sheer size. On average, men are taller, heavier(more dense would be accurate), and usually more explosive with strength and speed. This is just the average. Being a woman simply isn't the issue for the black belt, it really was just the mentality she had about fighting. If she trained like say Ebanie Bridges, Zhang Weili, or Holly Holms with the proper fundamentals of how to hit and how to take a hit (ideally avoid) this could have been a wildly different story. She might not have been able to wipe the floor with the guy but she could have at least held her own. Point fighting just breeds bad practice.

@@drunkendragon2771 Yeah I mean I was already aware of that (and many people have already stated in the comments that women are at a disadvantage physically compared to men, we know this). But yeah my main confusion is why people (men) look down on female fighters in general (but in this case this woman could not even be considered a “fighter”).

What is self defense? Attacking someone who's back is against the ground? Chasing someone who runs? Be firm without giving in. Be fair and level instead of lashing out.

Thought that smack in her face was a warning for her, but she kept hanging in there 😂 She's needs to learn that there are no rules in the streets

I understand what you are saying and I felt all of that when I went to "light spar" against a boxer. . . My points meant nothing when he put the lights out move on me in the corner XD

For a women learn jiu jitsu and muy thai. The reason i didn't mention boxing is because women don't have punching power. With muy thai you can leg kick, elbows, thai clinch, sweep, or elbows. Muy thai and jiu jitsu requires resistance training. Karate is useless because it relies on points.
