Crossbuck Railway Crossing With Flashing Yellow Lights! Very unusual public level crossing in Columbus Ohio on CSX mainline. Another in a series of weird railroad crossings. The yellow flashing light flashes continuously even before the tank car train approached. Filmed at Hess Road on March 25, 2019. The second train was filmed at E Cooke Road the next day. E Cook Road is a dead end road where the local railfans hang out. I saw about a dozen train spotters here in the evening. This location was only a little over a mile from where I spent 2 nights at Motel 6 room 202, where I stay every March to watch trains from my room. Outro shows the view from Motel 6 with a coal train passing by. Thanks for watching! Please comment, rate and SUBSCRIBE TO JAWTOOOTH !!

Man,I love going on those 2,3 and 4 day Railfanning Excursions. Breakfast in the lobby of the hotel and then its nothing but Trains and more trains all day long. Then,back to the hotel and the wait for morning. Always a good deal when you can get a room facing the tracks,most people would pay extra to avoid those rooms,not us. Great video as always,my friend! Headed to Biloxi from Bedford,Indiana in June to film. You have an open invite!

Watched a video of people driving and walking around the guard rails! The train that crossed the road had 107 cars and was doing 60 mph+! Did some research and the locomotive weighs 196 tons, 100 cars weigh 1250 tons BEFORE loaded with stock! The gross weight of the train was 1446 tons!
@JawTooth
@JawTooth 10 месяцев назад
Actually it would weigh a lot more than that. Most locomotives weigh up to three times that and most rail cars weigh about 25 to 30 tons each empty. Loaded rail cars weigh around 100 tons or more. I have filmed trains that weigh over 14K tons

A few years ago when I was there I had a prostitute bothering me. She came to my room and then called me on the phone. I told her to leave me alone or I would report her. Thankfully, in the last 2 years that I have stayed there, nobody has bothered me. The motel next door was on a tv program called "I almost Got Away With It". I have stayed there also and I was only a couple rooms down from where the show was filmed. That area does seem to draw the less than desirables. Most people think I'm a cop when they see my scanner and how I dress up for the conferences that I attend up there every year. Lol. I make sure the radio is in full view.

It's a common anomaly with LED's being shot with a CCD camera. The camera's circuitry and the refresh rate of the LED's in the shot get cancelled out. Kind of how in the old days, if you saw video footage of someone's cathode ray tube tv or computer monitor, it looked like it had a horizontal hold problem, with a slow screen-roll issue... that's to do with refresh rates being slightly out-of-synch with each other.

The monon railroad used to have a few crossings with a green light that would be continuously lit, except for when a train was approaching. There would be a sign on the post that the light was on that said stop when light is out. Something I found out when researching the monon railroad historical society's website.

Yes, those are mainline tracks, but the traffic on this road, doesn't warrant full crossing warning equipment, yet! Thanks for another video, showing us something different, dealing with trains. On the second video, did you notice that the flashing lights would fade out, and come back on a few seconds later? What a huge savings in electricity by doing it this way. Also, for those railfans who look at each piece of rolling stock, what car did we miss, while you took that call? Guess using a phone to video, isn't the best way to shoot videos, sometimes. I'm giving you a hard time about the missed car! Thanks for the video.

Years ago in an American railroad magazine I saw photos of crossings operated by a man who sat in a tiny cabin like a phone booth and manually operated the booms. I've had the same thing happen on my videos from up to Deshler at the crossing on the southwest wye up there. Thought at first it was a malfunction when I got home and saw the video. Then I noticed on other trips that the lights were still going when they went dark on the camera. I've noticed similar effects with other LED lights/displays on my videos at times. Been wanting to get over to Cooke Road sometime ever since I moved down here to Hilliard. I get over that way at times since The Train Station (best hobby store ever) is just up the street. :-)

There used to be a few like that in downtown Orlando{Florida} when I was a young child, but they've been long gone and replaced with the newer type we see now on most RR highway crossings. I think they replaced them sometime around 1976, maybe a few years earlier than that. Just know they were still there when I was in Jr. High School in the early 70's. Ours had red lights instead of Amber/Yellow lights like the one in your video. Ours were also on side roads where you'd make a right or left turn onto a main road where a regular crossing signal with gates would be. That 2nd train passing by the RR signal needs it's electronics control board replaced. When they start fading off and back on like that, it's not getting a constant voltage from the control board, time for the Signal Maintainer to come out and replace it before it fails completely! The gate is also controlled by the same board, but different circuit on the board and is why the gate doesn't raise when the lights fade out and fade back on like that. EDIT: Strange your camera does that, I videoed trains and signals for years and never saw that on any of the digital camera's I had used or in any of my videos. But I have seen signals do that for real, hence my comment prior to this edit!

Do you know why the red lights fade in and out? I've seen this phenomenon on other train videos on RU-vid, but you're the first to mention that it's not happening in reality. It seems to only happen with the new LED lights, but not all of them. I'd love to know the scientific explanation for this. And, yes, I did read the comment farther down, but it seemed like speculation more than fact. Thanks for the vids, Jawtooth!
@ed_halley
@ed_halley 5 лет назад
LED based lights tend to be driven electronically in an ON OFF ON OFF pattern that is faster than you can see with your eye. (Older style lamps do too, but it's usually a much slower speed and they glow a little during the OFF periods so the effect is not as obvious. Cameras tend to capture each frame of video in a very short period of time. If the camera keeps taking frames of video on the OFF cycle, you'll think the light is off. If the camera keeps taking frames of video when the lights are changing from ON to OFF, the camera image just makes the light look dimmer. Think of it like a kid's game where you blink very often while the train goes by, and you can time your blinking rate to match the cars rolling by.
