It's 40 years since the film Threads ( • Threads (1984) ORIGINA... ) was shown on British TV. It portrayed the effects of a nuclear attack on the city of Sheffield, England and the eventual long-term effects of nuclear war on civilization. It therefore seems apt to publish a tour I had of the Hack Green Regional Seat of Government Bunker museum. (www.hackgreen....)
Nestled in the heart of Cheshire, Hack Green Nuclear Bunker (www.hackgreen....) is a hidden gem that offers a fascinating glimpse into the Cold War era. I had the pleasure of exploring this historical site with Rod Siebert who originally bought the bunker and volunteer David Smith ( / protect_and_survive_lhg ) , who shared their extensive knowledge and passion for this remarkable place.
The bunker contains many unique artefacts such as the largest public collection of nuclear weapons casings in Europe, including Polaris, Trident, Chevaline and WE 177, the UK's last airdrop nuclear deterrent.
Other rare and unique items include the Queen's transition to war telephone, which would have been used by the UK government to communicate with Buckingham Palace in the event of war.
Hack Green (www.hackgreen....) is not just a museum; it's a time capsule that offers a unique and sobering insight into the Cold War era. Whether you're a history buff, a fan of military technology, or simply curious about this hidden piece of history, Hack Green (www.hackgreen....) is a must-visit.

The first time I saw the infamous Threads was sometime in the early 2000's. It gave me nightmares.

Having served in a Pershing missle unit in the early '80's , it always stays with me how close this almost became a reality, especially in '83.

I feel like this is one that really would have been better visual, even if that's not the norm. Seeing the place, versus just hearing about it, would have been really cool.

That’s fair comment. There are some photos I took on the main episode page alongside the films and videos mentioned. You can see them here. coldwarconversations.com/episode366/

Collected a vehicle for a client from here, the owner wasn’t around for an hour, so was invited to have a look around for free, enjoyed it so much came back again for a paid visit. Had some very unique vehicles in his hangar next door.

Back in the Cold War I knew I'd suffer the same luck as the dad in Threads who was using the commode during the 4 min warning. However being in the US away from any military targets I would have gotten at least a 30 min warning. Plenty of time for one last movement in 20th cen dignity with a full roll of paper.
