Superb - I find myself saying that a lot on this channel. The tuning with the hose pipe is like borderline alchemy. When you think about how much metal is being thrown around in that engine, the coin on the rocker cover is just as impressive. Man! I love old engines...
Perhaps the "tough audience" was spellbound and realized they would never witness this again, while crafting tales to share with their children that they had seen Merlin and he was real! 😉🎄🎅
My goodness when you get so excited to see these videos of our Sir Tyrrell pop up on the screen already knowing we’ll be happy for the next half an hour or so…. In a troubling time for many these being pure joy. Thank you Sir as always
Thanks Iain, that’s great to see you in action with those carbs.Having lived in France for the last 38 years,I have worked in garages,my collègue Joel, took his mechanics apprenticeship in an Alfa Romeo Dealership in Caen France, where I live.He started at the age of 14,tuned those carbs just like you, with ear ,rubber hose and screwdriver. I had a Peugeot 205 Rallye at the time,he tuned my Webber’s with much, finesse when we put k&N competition air filters on too.noisy but great fun to drive,my son loved the sound. His biggest task was tuning the Alfetta 6 engines, that had 6 carbs too, nearly a couple of hours to do sometimes for all servicing. Thanks Iain, looking forward to more next year🙏
For the first time Iain I have no idea what to say. The video sort of says it all. You captivated your audience with incredible knowledge and expertise. As you are an accomplished musician and car tuner by ear, I will leave it to you as I am tone deaf!!. Super video as always. In case this is the last of this year Iain, a very happy festive period to you, your family and all the wonderful workers at the garage. Cheers, Bob
Holy moly. I am a chemistry teacher and a car nut, but never in my life had I realised the link between the carburettor snd the burette. Iain, you've blown my mind.
He is a musician. I'm lucky enough to be gifted with the same talent, though I can't tune cars, I can hear music and immediately reproduce it on the piano. He combines that ear with his knowledge of motors. it is a remarkable skill.
How amazing to see you in DK at Selected - as a Dane - really great Thanks Iain - and hope you enjoyed your stay here - I am quite sure that you did - and great to see that some of you projects ended up here in our small corner og the world ! My Best also for the holidays - look forward to see more from you in the future 😊
Long ago I had a simple 1966 triumph spitfire with two carburettors. My mechanic used to tune it with a hosepipe. I remember being so impressed at the time.
The No6 engine is a work of art, the way the intake and exhaust are angle to give the straightest run in and out of the combustion chamber. If you ever need an old school machinist Ian, give me a shout.
Iain’s artisan craftsmanship is brilliant. That V-12 on the stand, seriously ! What a fantastic video in Denmark 🇩🇰 in a truly unique setting with some of the best automobiles ever produced. Iain thank you so much for this dedicated hard work and passion ❤
Deary me, very unexpected this one. How fantastic for making the event accessible here on YT for everyone to enjoy and experience. And I can only imagine tuning an engine like this just by human senses requiring years and years of experience. Of course sounds can be explained but, as with music, they do require years of undergoing them to be able to actually sense and distinguish all balances and delicacies. Thank you so much Iian for open publishing this happening.
Iain Tyrrell: the Stephen Fry of the restoration caper. What a maestro. In some centuries, he'd have been put on a ducking stool to establish if he was a Warlock.
This was a magnificent episode. I enjoy both Iain's artistry with tuning engines and also his ability to clearly explain the intricacies of tuning priceless engine. He also brilliantly explains the history of the cars. I appreciated all of the sarcasm that he and Claus wove into this presentation. Thank you for sharing this.
Hearing these cars in person is just incredible. You more than hear it; you feel it rumble your soul. Great video, lots of information here. Thanks for sharing!
Iain. Professor of Lamborghini engines. A magnificent presentation to the Danish student body. I for one had a bare understanding of what a carburetor was. Now I could pass an exam on it. Excuse American spelling! A brilliant video. Thank you.
Wonderful content as always. I will add a little background info to your mention of the Audi TT and its addition of a rear spoiler. The rear spoiler was added as part of a recall after the early TT's were delivered and not before initial production. This, in addition to a slight re-work of the rear suspension made the cars more stable at high speed. Back in 2000 I was working at the Bedford Autodrome and we were partially supported by Audi at the time. To compensate TT owners for having to recall their cars, Audi offered track experiences to customers which I was a part of. Many years later I became close friends with the original designer of the TT Freeman Thomas and he told me that the original design of the TT had a small rear spoiler that was to be deployed at speed to negate lift. That spoiler (very similar to the one the Turbo Beetle got) was axed by accounting to their peril and thus a necessary recall after some accidents was required.
Saw the video was available. Did not play it straight away. I figured it was something special. And it is. Makes me so happy to see machines cared for at the same level I take care of mine. It is truly wonderful that so many see something like the Miura as a piece of working art. To see the balanced coin made me laugh and smile. Bravo.
The great Giotto Bizzarrini designed the Miura's engine which was first manufactured for use in the 350GT in 1964. An engine that carried on in production all the way to the Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce!
I've seen you do that test so many times but the explanation is fascinating, especially when you said your musical background helps in this aspect of your work. Another thing you can never experience with an EV.
Iain, you’re material is just outstanding. I am so glad to have came across your channel and content. Infectious, mesmerising, fascinating and thought provoking. Adore how you keep your trained secrets! Giampaolo Dallara has got to be proud of this one! Such a lovely engine.
That is so fabulous, especially when he talked about chips! Only Iain!

I really never did care for the Miura. Being an 80's kid my Lamborghini was always the Countach. However being "face" to face with a Miura in Hamburg this summer did convert me to the beauty of the Miura. Always a pleasure to get a lecture from Iain, very imformative.
Very impressive! Was/is the Muira running on an ethanol blended fuel. If so how was the carburetion modified to accommodate for the slower burning at lower inlet track speeds and for the lesser caloric value at higher inlet track speeds. Have you noticed a difference in the music between an ethanol fuel and an old type of five star fuel. Thanks.
Love this channel, if you ever come to the US for a demonstration count me in. Such a great speaker and a very knowledgeable gentleman. Hats off to you sir
Fun to be vicariously observing the running of that engine. I had as much fun watching you start the engine as when you were closing the trunk on the Standard Steel Bentley. Thank you.
Ian Tyrrell has extraordinary talents apart from his mechanical skills, he has demonstrated his singing ability and is a True English Gentleman!!!! Nowadays 'EFI' does ALL this for you by itself while you are driving!! 33m.14s turn up your volume for V12 Heaven!!
GREAT! to see you in my home country Iain, you a legend, As a young mecanic I used to see my dad and his brother do this on old Alfas like 33 1,7 QV and Alfetta 2,0 It is a art form to master, and when a Webber car is propper dial in, it goes like nothing else, and the music it makes is out of this world. But the way nice watch.😉
Greetings from Germany. Again a very entertaining "edutainment" video with a little spark of british humor. Ian & his team always do a great job elevating "vintage car service" to the upper level. I keep my fingers crossed that Ian might work on a magnificent Facel Vega HK500 II in the future. Would be the last car of my dream garage (Lamborghini Miura, Iso Grifo & Facel Vega). I only own a peasant 1964 Buick Riviera :-/.
It thrills me to no end when I see Iain get the hose and screwdriver out for a bit of tuning. Tossing the air meter over the shoulder was better than a pinch of salt.
This is magic for those of us that grew up with carbs.I put on on a Ford Pinto lump ( just a twin choke) and it took me along long time to set it up but by god when on song you have a different engine. That was a mere 1.6 capri. Fantastic carbs. They almost feel like driving a turbo because at the sweet spot there is literally a sudden rush of power.( Mind you they drink petrol for fun)
Aw Ian, thanks for this early Christmas present. It was so good to see you perform, where you are the "star" for a change. Some comments mention "tough audience" or similar, I replied to one with this "Perhaps the "tough audience" was spellbound and realised they would never witness this again, while crafting tales to share with their children that they had seen Merlin and he was real! 🎄😉✨
I was lucky as a young engineer to be taught by my father the technique of tuning carbs by ear . Something , in my late seventies , I still do for a local restoration company To the younger engineers , carbs , tappets , and points are a mystery ! . Even the Lucas fuel injection on Triumphs can benefit from a listen to the trumpets on the throttle bodies for balancing . Love the videos , don't stop .
Stoichiometry is actually a Greek word Mr. Iain which comes fron the words στοιχείο(element) + μέτρον(metric). Thank you for the lesson on carburators and their οperating principle. Wishing all car enthusiasts "warm" holidays & a happy New Year!!!
