This is the completed installation of the dual EP Cube battery backup system in #palmsprings. A lot of cool things to discuss and show you. We shut the grid power off completely for 4-hours straight with no issues turning on the homes multiple air conditionining units and powering all the other home loads. The retrofitted ‪@SolarEdgeTechnologies‬ system also turned on and started powering the home and recharging the batteries as expected.

it’s been a pretty solid product from installation to software updates to general operation. We’ve installed a lot of different batteries over the years and it’s nice to finally see manufactures getting things right.

That home must have modern inverter air conditioning units. I doubt it will start any traditional non-inverter type units without soft start kits. My 4 ton heat pump has LRA of 96 amps.

I believe they had two 4-ton units. The LRA rating on many of these batteries today can handle 80 amps or more, and when you double you also double your LRA rating

This is good. I was wondering if you balanced the strings per inverter but I see now that this is a Tesla retrofit.

Yeah, they have dual SolarEdge inverters which if it was any other type of inverter we could’ve DC coupled it.

Cool! How does this system work with bidirectional charging EVs? Can the system recognize the EV batteries as an additional power source?

No it cant use the EV batteries as a power source currently. Talk is abundant on a potential software update in the future, though.

What I dont understand is, isnt it supposed that in the USA, there is an embargo on chinese solar products? we´ve had nothing but problemas with that brand down here in Mexico

I’m not aware of this product available outside of North America, Japan, and parts of Europe.

@@PacificSunTech Canadian Solar is very much sold in Mexico ... actually everyone tries to market it as a true Canadian made product. In our experience Canadian Solar products are way overrated and prone to warranty issues.

@@PacificSunTech the EG4 power pro takes the same amount of space and has 15KW of power and can output 12kw. That’s more than the 7.6KW the ep cube can put out.

Just a minor correction. Charging an ev during grid outage is easily accomplished with a sol ark 15kW w/ a few battery options

Sure, but it’s not integrated in a way to tell the system to stop charging the EV during a specific event. What happens if you have a power outage at 2am and you’re down to 40% SOC and the SolArc kicks in as it should but your EV is charging so all the power goes into the car. You drain the battery into the car instead of having the EV charging stopped automatically the second it went into backup mode.

This particular configuration is around $45,000 before the 30% federal investment tax credit and any state rebates.

It’s a bit more than that, you have plan design, engineering, permits, electrical components like wire, electrical panels, circuit breakers, general materials like mounting brackets and gutter boxes, administration and of course labor. The most expensive components are the battery modules, hybrid inverters and the automatic transfer switch.

I’m comparing storage capacity and power output to wall space. There really isn’t anything on the market this compact that gives you up-to 40kWh of storage capacity at 15kW of continuous power and 44kVa of surge.

@@PacificSunTech So an EG4 18k can output 12kw of electricity and have 15kw of storage per battery. That would take up the space of one of the units you are showing. The EP Cube can only output 7.6KW hrs of energy per inverter where, as I said, the EG4 can output 12kw per inverted. And it takes up the same amount of space?

@@nestnirvana The EG4 takes up more space actually. My garage is pretty tight with 2 cars and the EG4's depth would be a problem. The EP Cube's depth is no problem plus I can expand vertically without taking up any more room horizontally.

The EPCube uses Chinese made, low cost, high frequency, transformerless inverter technology that's notorious for providing a low surge capacity that offers poorer inductive load performance than higher performance, safer, longer lived low frequency, transformer based inverter tech.

I’m pretty sure just about every inverter has parts from China. We’re a global economy it’s hard to not have parts and materials come from other regions.
