Americans were introduced to Alfa Romeo's compact premium SUV, the Stelvio. A new generation of fun-to-drive crossovers with updated technology, additional room, and the option of gas or all-electric drivetrains should be available by 2025. The Tesla Model Y, BMW X3, and Lexus NX are among the rival models.
We can't wait to drive a Stelvio after it gets its first redesign this year. It shares bones with the equally captivating Giulia sedan. The endearing Italian has always won our hearts with its personality and driving qualities, and the new model should bring better powertrain options. In the end, there will be gas and all-electric variants available.
The redesign may also result in a slightly larger SUV, which would allay our complaints about the restricted cargo space and limited legroom in the backseat. It looks like more technological advancements, such as a bigger infotainment interface, are on the way. One of the upgrades, if we had our say, would be a more fashionable cabin.
Since the Stelvio has always been one of the more aesthetically pleasing options in the class, we're hopeful the updated 2025 model will make the Stelvio more useful.
Previously, the top model in the Stelvio lineup was the Quadrifoglio, which has a 2.9-liter turbocharged V-6 engine with 505 horsepower that is derived by Ferrari. However, Alfa dropped that engine for the US market, although the 2024 Charger and the new model are built on the same base. The Italian crossover is probably going to have some (North) American iron under the engine.
We believe the 550-horsepower Hurricane inline-six engine from the muscle car, which powers the Charger Sixpack H.O., will end up in the updated gas Stelvio. With this powerplant, launches to 60 mph should be possible in 3.3 seconds, which is at least as fast as the Quadrifoglio. Similar to the Charger, all gas-powered Stelvios ought to be AWD initially, with RWD versions perhaps coming later.
We wouldn't be shocked to see the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine from the previous Stelvio return as the base engine for the lineup. Even though it wasn't as fast as the V-6, the powertrain was still rather good. With its 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque, it can accelerate the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. That's remarkable for a tiny premium SUV with a basic engine.
