中国の麻雀牌はやけにでかいですよね

100 years ago, all mahjong tiles were made by hand. The shin bones of cattle were used for the face, and bamboo for the backing. During the American mahjong craze of 1920-24, there was so much demand for tiles that China ran out of shin bones, and the Chicago slaughterhouses had to ship bones to China to make more tiles!

卓はそんなに変わらない感じですね 知り合いの中じゃ手麻雀の時に3段の山を作ってる人もいるし。。 そもそも中国では河を綺麗に並ばないのも原因かな。。？ 故意に捨て牌を隠したりして、手持ちの危ないやつをコッソリと出すのかな。。？ それとなんか日本の牌だと小さいとか言う奴もいるし。。。 聞いたら中国の真ん中のくらいの内陸地方だと54ミリ牌が好ましいところもあるそうで。。 逆に海に近いほど小さいサイズのがなじむ感じだそうです。。 (一説によるとその地方は牌が大きいほど運が良くなるとか、雀荘が42ミリよりも小さい牌を出したらすっげー怒られるだそうです。) (なのにローカルでは役とかハンとかのルールがあまり効かないだそうで。。) (本当に上がる時が飛んでくるデカいやつとの間違いじゃないのかな。。。)

They are missing the winds, dragons, flowers and seasons. I have to say that I appreciate my old bone/bamboo tiles that are hand cut and painted over the machine made ones.

@@seus2731 Our set was a gift from my late father in law. Since he was a Kunming (China) resident I guess he purchased it there. Here in Belgium from time to time you can find them in Asian stores in Chinatown.

That is what i thought and said to myself when i saw the thickness as well. I have played both set ups and prefer the traditional hand delt version myself.

They are not that durable as you thought. Once a single tile cracked, even just a small one, you need to buy a new whole set. Otherwise every player will know which tile it is.

I think it is state owned so it is to keep people employed and not necessary optimized to reduce labor. I could imaging a line of people manually hand painting the pieces years ago....
