I don't see this as "insanely expensive". Governments think nothing of spending that much on 5 military jets or 10 tanks, or 1 ship. This is so much better use of money that more weapons. And actually the donations have more than covered the costs.

Yes although these old worship places are pretty well priceless and essential for the tourist industry (ie the Vatican) so I’m sure it will all be recouped and more soon enough. In the meantime it does provide lots of unexpected additional employment for hundreds of labourers and engineers etc…

Would have been nice to credit the gentleman who made the 3D scan of the Cathedral. His name was Andrew Tallon. He was an art historian and professor at Vassar College. He scanned Notre Dame de Paris in 2015. Professor Tallon passed away in November 2018 at the age of 49. If you look up his name along with Vassar College in your favorite search engine you’ll find the part of Vassar’s website dedicated to his work.

Indeed. His work became now a very important Legacy.
@edschultheis9537
@edschultheis9537 Месяц назад
Without the 3D scans, I think that the restoration could have easily taken twice as long, and I don't think that they ever would have been able to restore it to the dimensional accuracy (or the detailed features) of the original structure. I think that the restorers would have had to use a lot of educated guesswork with collections of available photos and video that had be taken over the decades. It would have been a nightmare. It is just so fortunate that Mr. Tallon did those 3D scans. IMO, his work was perhaps the most significant all the work necessary to restore that structure. This being the case, it seems to me that it would be a good idea to get professional 3D scans of all historic structures that would be rebuilt if ever destroyed. It seems like a prudent insurance policy against completely losing historic structures in the future. Ed Schultheis, PE Mechanical design engineer and manufacturing consultant for 35 years

As an American, I can’t possibly overstate my appreciation to the French people for ensuring that this incredible landmark received the highest attention to detail with much love and care in this fine old lady’s restoration. So many other historical landmarks should have been treated with the same understanding of their historical significance that they would’ve been repaired as needed instead of being ignored. The Parthenon is one such building. People generally aren’t aware of this, but the vast majority of the damage to the Parthenon happened during the 18th and 19th centuries. The English even had the gall to remove many of the Parthenon’s gorgeous fresco’s that surround the building along its roofline, and placed them in a museum where they sit to this day, with the English government refusing to return them back to their rightful owners, the Greek government. Unfortunately, some idiot thought that the Parthenon was going to be a good place to store live ammunition. Needless to say, it most certainly wasn’t. She too has been undergoing significant repairs and restoration, but not even remotely close to the actual work that she deserves. The Parthenon should have undergone a complete restoration, and it should’ve happened long before now. Most people don’t understand the historical significance of this building. She’s literally the very first building of her type, and emboldened significant changes to follow-on buildings around the entire world. Another such building is the Roman Colosseum. She too should have been restored back to her original design and specifications. Perhaps one day, the Italian government will come to see the architectural and historical significance this site brings to all parts of the world, and will finally decide to conduct a full and complete massive restoration of on of the most significant structures of her time. Each of these structures value is essentially priceless. A full and complete restoration of each will ensure their survival well into the distant future for all of mankind, but we must act before there’s nothing left to restore.

@@tomsmith2013 I suspect that perhaps you may have lost your perceived freedom from merely listening to a man that’s been feeding you a line of BS so that he could get your vote and become the president again. I strongly suggest that, if you actually pull back the bully pulpit from which he’s standing there preaching, you’ll find that he’s the one that’s stepping all over your freedoms. Meanwhile, he makes a mockery of our democracy as if it’s only here by his good graces. AND ONLY HE CAN FIX IT. When someone tells me that, I know that he or she no longer deserves my vote and isn’t trustworthy enough to be trusted with our freedoms. It’s not, and he’s a bumbling idiot for even suggesting that only “he” can fix our Democracy. I suspect that if he had bothered to read the Constitution before he ever ran for office, that he probably wouldn’t have broken it in the first place. But he seems to think that if he repeatedly tells us a lie OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN, WE’LL START TO BELIEVE THAT LIE IS THE TRUTH. It’s no. It’s still the same lie he told a long time ago. Your freedoms have been and continue to be fully intact. You just need to take a step back and start asking questions of the person who’s telling you to “ONLY LISTEN TO ME.” Because when someone says such things, that person deserves your scrutiny, not your respect. I always, always, ALWAYS QUESTION OUR LEADERS. That’s what holds them accountable. No matter how much you like a politician, they should still be looked at with a suspicious eye to keep them from straying from our country’s principle values. Sadly, this individual’s ONLY INTEREST are in serving his own interests, regardless of who he hurts. He was a bully-thug when he was a businessman, and he’s still the same bully-thug today. And I highly suspect that, once a judge grows some balls, that he’ll be a bully-thug with his audience ripped away when he’s finally behind bars.

I agree, it was stupid. Instead of building the roof trusses in steel which would prevent fire and help in lightning strikes, they are rebuilding it with wooden trusses. This is like building a working replica of the TITANIC with the same number of lifeboats as before for historical accuracy. With the money available, the trusses could have been made out of stainless steel and would have never degraded. Fire suppression usually damages things. The best way is to build things which just don't burn. They are treating the timber to reduce burning. Watch the treatment chemical turn out to be a carcinogen.

Built during the Medieval era, Notre Dame is a structure of significant historical relevance to the world. The same can’t really be said about the Statue of Liberty, as it was built during modern times and isn’t even 150 years old. A great many structures across the world are that age - and there’s nothing particularly revolutionary about the way Liberty was constructed. But had the Statue endured a devastating fire or was at risk of imminent collapse, I suspect it, too, would have garnered international financial support. Notwithstanding your representation regarding financing of Notre Dame’s restoration, other videos detail how the majority of the funds raised for the project did, in fact, come from private donations. And what millionaire, billionaire wouldn’t want to contribute to the cathedral’s restoration? To have one’s name memorialized on a plaque somewhere in one of the world’s great structures would be a great honor.

Stainless steel beyond a certain degree of heat does burn. 100% metal skycrapers so burn like torches, as well as cruisers on the high sea. Treated wood and bamboo burns far less easily at very high temperatures. In medieval times such wood was treated. Not everybody looked on in horror, many in the streets of Paris were jubilant over it. Guess who?

Sorry, but I don't like the new spire. Looks like a bit of Las Vegas.

No one should've paid for this to be rebuilt except the church. They have more than enough money.

Which church? The Catholic Church doesn't own this church.

This restoration is not as beautiful as the original structure. Personally I think it’s ugly what is that on top the Eiffel tower?they should of left alone and made it the same as it was … sad they ruined it in my opinion

Hi there, Let me introduce myself, my name is Aldie, a professional voice over talent who speaks fluent Indonesian. I'm sure your videos will be more interesting to Indonesian viewers if they are delivered by a narrator in Indonesian. This of course also expands the reach of your videos. That's why I'm interested in working with you. Can there be opportunities? Regards

Seriously!!!!!!!!! You called the tower a flying buttress. This is NOT OK. And your thumbnail picture shows you have no integrity.

This is just a poorly pieced together rehash of clips. There is little new detail and nothing substantial regarding the restoration. Subscriber lost

Embarrassing. Pathetic. We know why the original design was replaced with this modern art crap.. There are no artisans today who can replicate the original.

Childish video. Is that the intent here? Show this to your 5th grade class?

I hope they planted at least a tree for every tree they cut down to rebuild this place. They cut down a lot of beautiful trees to restore this building. Trees are much more important than this place. We have failed to see this.

Dude. Did u watch the whole video? In 9:11 they said that it would cost 767 million but they got donations for over 900 million. The bill is payed through donations. Why would the pope need to pay for something France got for free which is also drawing tourists from around the world.

The French built it as a labor of love for their religious faith. Yes, the designers, suppliers and workers were paid, but not much, and a lot of the labor was provided free as penance. You may not believe, and that's fine, but this is a symbol of France, before France was whole as we know it today.

They could have done it in four years if they worked 5 days a week instead of just 4. They’ve taken a full year off in these 5 years. Is it any wonder that the French GDP is one of the lowest in Europe. LOL
@timberwoof
@timberwoof 2 месяца назад
You are, of course correct: GDP is the only worthwhile measure of the goodness of a country. Things like quality of life, education, health care, vacation time … pfft. Who needs all those drains on the pockets of the wealthy?

French work 30 hours a week. Want speed, go to china, I think this structure will be completed in 2 years under chinese team and the church can collect visit fees earlier. but over to french method, will it finish by 2027?

Why should Catholics be concerned with refurbishing or otherwise effecting structural alterations or repairs on a church, much less a cathedral, where the Holy Sacrifice of The Msss is not even celebrated nor The Blessed Sacrament adored?
@timberwoof
@timberwoof 2 месяца назад
Because they're humans and it's an astonishing thing of beauty created by humans? I'm not Catholic, but I am in favor of repairing and restoring this building.
