About: Unzen Onsen is a geothermal-heated volcanic hot spring field in the Unzen Mountains in Nagasaki prefecture in Japan. It was known of for many years, and in the 1910s was developed into a hot spring community because of its many springs. In 1934 the area was designated as the first national park in Japan.
The hot springs are surrounded by an area known as the Hells (jigoku). These barren fields of hot springs contain many steam vents, bubbling mud pits and fumaroles. After the Shimabara Rebellion the Hells were used to execute Christian rebels. Today, paved trails lead visitors through the Hells.
In an older, now dormant hot springs field, paths lead to the Manmyoji Temple and to the Unzen Disaster Museum, that commemorates the eruptions that occurred in the 1990s in which 12,000 people were evacuated and over 40 people perished. Source: Wikipedia
The hot mineral water has a high sulfur content, and strong levels of acidity. In addition to sulfur, the mineral content includes aluminum, iron, and sulfate. The water temperature is 98 °C, and the hot carbonate and hydrogen sulfide gasses that erupt from the springs can be as high as 120 °C.
My Experience:
1. I travelled in from Gunma Prefecture (Takasaki) and took the earliest Shinkansen from Takasaki Station which consisted of around a 7.5 hour train ride from Takasaki to Tokyo station
2. Switching Shinkansen (from Tokyo to Hakata)
3. Switching trains in Hakata, then taking the Limited Express from Hakata to Tokeo Onsen
4. Switching trains again to take more local train from Tokeo onsen to Isahaya station.
5. From here I took another local train to ride one more station down to Hon-Isahaya
6. Picked up the rental car at Toyota Rent A Car トヨタレンタカー諌早店 (maps.app.goo.gl/8hvju9bFcxLuW....
7. After only snacking in the train all day, I decided for the local favorite of Unagi at うなぎ・割烹 北御門 Kappo Kitamikado (maps.app.goo.gl/MCNGteJgGSYPB....
8. After eating then drove to the onsen I booked at quite literally the evening before via #booking.com getting a the only remaining availability at Unzen Sky Hotel 雲仙スカイホテル (maps.app.goo.gl/coG3eNQnGbsMY....
9. After checking in, I quickly walked the area, went back to ryokan (hotel) for a bath, then went to dinner that evening at Bunnoji Japanese Restaurant 文ノ字 (maps.app.goo.gl/UrpH52PqBXuzB...) which was one of the few restaurants also open during this day of the week and time.
10. A long, hot bath and prepare for the following hike day at Mount Unzen
