Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old balloon salesman, is about to fulfill a lifelong dream. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, he flies away to the South American wilderness. But curmudgeonly Carl's worst nightmare comes true when he discovers a little boy named Russell is a stowaway aboard the balloon-powered house. A Pixar animation.

A couple of things: during the hospital scene, you see a tape dispenser and scissors on the nightstand beside Ellie's bed, implying Ellie knew she was going to die. So she finished the part about "Things I'm going to do" to leave for Carl. But Carl, being so heartbroken after Ellie's death, is unable to move on and both unable and unwilling to literally and figuratively "turn the page" until the end of the movie. And when he does turn the page in the scrapbook, he is able to turn the page in the scrapbook, he comes to a realization that he still has new adventures to live for. Second is that Timothee asked what Carl was going to when he got to Paradise Falls. It's unsaid, but it's obvious that Carl planned to just go there and die. After he realized he was going to lose the house and spend his last day in a senior facility, he decided to say the hell with everything and take the house to Paradise Falls and basically just die. He wasn't necessarily think about suicide, but he was at peace with the idea that he had no other plans once he got to Paradise Falls. So when he decides to dump all his furniture and belongings to save Russell, he completes his character arc because it is only in that moment that he make a decision to move on and have new adventures, but without Ellie. The house coming to rest in the exact place as the painting Carl and Ellie made on the wall also symbolizes that aspect of Carl's life come to completion, but by leaving the house behind, he has learned how to move on. And in the end credits, we see that Carl become a father figure to Russell, finally having the child that he and Ellie were never able to have together in life.

There's a channel called Cinema Therapy that's a a therapist and a filmmaker that react to films and in their reaction to this movie, the filmmaker pointed out that almost every single line comes back around and not a single one is wasted like when Mr. Fredrickson is daydreaming about hanging Russell out of the window of his house he tells Russell "Stop squirming around kid!" in a cranky frowning face and he repeats the line when pulling Russell, Doug and Kevin onto the Spirit of Adventure but this time he's smiling. I thought it was really cool

Part of the magic of this movie is that, in a way, Ellie is just as much of a character as the others, even though her actual appearance is so brief. Her essence, or spirit, if you will, permeates the entire story, adding a poignancy that never let's go.

There is an argument to be made on Up being perhaps the best Disney movie. That intro alone is worth the price of admission and is probably one if not the best intro to a movie ever...an entire life story with not a single word spoken...just music and hearthbreak that shred our heart. Both beautiful and sad, just like life can be. The rest of the movie is almost a bonus !

Interesting to note: Pixar reached out to a mother whose 10-year-old daughter named Colby was dying from a rare form of cancer. She couldn’t walk and was going blind, but didn’t want to miss this movie. After many calls and a handwritten letter to the studio, they answered and sent out a Pixar employee with a DVD master copy of Up to visit this dying girl’s house in Huntington Beach, CA for a private viewing. Her mother had to speak word for word over what was going on in the film. When it was all over, Colby’s last words were that she loved it. Sadly, she passed away seven hours after viewing it. Her last wish fulfilled by an animation studio who has heard their plight. Pixar really made it more meaningful knowing the circumstance surrounding a tragedy that befell upon main character Carl Fredricksen’s wife Ellie. Feels relatable to this real-life story.

A lot of this movie is about letting go and moving forward. Muntz has spent an entire lifetime searching for the bird to the point where if he doesn’t find it and prove those that said he was crazy and wasting him time wrong, then he feels his life was a waste. In that regard Frederickson finding the bird first is a threat to his very life. He would easily kill Frederickson and Russel to save his own life. He can’t let it go. And he was so deep that everything he does is skewed. Frederickson loves and misses his wife so much that the house now personifies his wife to him, and his guilt is so deep that he wants to fulfill their unresolved promise and take “her” to the falls. He can’t let go. He’s deep enough that he’s stubborn. But for him, he eventually realized their promise was long realized in another way by giving her a lifetime of memories and that her last wish was for him to move on. And so he finally did. There are indications that Ellie filled out all the "Stuff I'm Going to Do" pages in her last stay in the hospital. Notice the tape dispenser and scissors on her hospital nighstand. That's why the pages were such a surprise to Carl at the end.

I attended a lecture by Paul Topolos, who worked on this movie and Wall-E. This was way back before this movie was released. We saw a lot of behind the scene stuff, like the 3D models, hidden Easter eggs etc. Paul was a real cool guy and it was a pleasure to talk animated movies with him. A movie I’d recommend is Secret of the Kells by Cartoon Saloon. They also made Wolf Walkers.

This film serves a question to all of us - even Fredricksson - "What would I do now? My wife's gone, this house is going to be demolished and how can I accomplish my wife's adventures?" Until Russell came and they accomplished the adventure - far more greater than they expected.
@matveynoname7083

There are people who write that all the touchingness of the film lies only in the intro, and the rest is a standard adventure movie, or the dramaturgy is not enough. Although, as for me, there are quite enough touching moments in the tape, whether it's a conversation between Karl and Russell or a scene where Karl metaphorically says goodbye to his past. P.S. The reaction came out right on my Birthday.

Lol! “He ruined his mailbox.” It was accident. First off, the worker doesn’t know the full story & probably just got there doing his job. Secondly, he did tell his guy to stop but due to the ongoing loud noise made it hard to hear then accidentally hit the mailbox. Lastly, as you said, he apologized & was just trying to help fix it. It was his mistake & insisted to help. He didn’t intentionally provoke the old man in any way.

Easter Eggs: In Ratatouille (the previous PIXAR film) while Remy is scurrying his way out of the sewers and he encounters a barking dog, you can see the dog's shadow on the wall - that's Dug. As the house in Up sails past the apartment with the little girl, you can see her Lotso Hugz bear in the corner - a principal character in Toy Story 3 (the next PIXAR film). The construction worker early on is voiced by John Ratzenberger, who has had a voiced role in *EVERY* PIXAR film - he's their 'good luck charm'. (The Underminer from The Incredibles was added during post-production when they realized they had forgotten to include Ratzenberger in the film and didn't want to risk jinxing the project.)

Other than The Incredibles and the Toy Story movies, and definitely next to WALL-E, Up is among my favorite Disney/Pixar movies, because it's so original, well-written, relatable, and powerful. It only takes until the first 15 minutes and you're already moved to tears, I know I do every single time. 😭😭😭 Thank you for the adventure, Ellie. Rest in peace. Most importantly, it's the short fine moments where there's no dialogue but the score itself along with the visuals that tells the story, and it hits you deeply in the heart. It's impossible to craft a masterpiece like this.

We rescued a dog named Modelo before this movie came out. When we watched this and Dug came into the action we both looked at each other and said OUR DOG IS DUG!! We renamed him on the spot and he actually responded better to that name than his previous name. He was Dug from that day on. He passed recently and the world is a bit less fun without him. RIP Dug. You were a GOOD DOG!!!

tv series suggestion for both of yall to watch/react to: our flag means death. its about pirates and its only 10 eps 30 mins an episode. it has amazing representation (lgbt and poc) and its just a great show overall !

A yt channel called corridor crew did a vid on how plausible this would be to lift the weight of the house and if I remember it was 4x the amount of balloons shown in the film

I notice, in the movie, when Carl makes a promise to Ellie, even after she is gone, he uses his finger to cross his heart. And he fulfills his promise to his beautiful wife. When the kid makes him promise NOT to leave the bird and asks him to cross his heart, notice Carl DOESN"T make that same movement of crossing his heart. He vocally whispers "Cross my heart" as the kid sleeps.Just thought that was interesting. At that moment, his promise to Russell doesn't hold AS MUCH weight as the one he made to Ellie, but he still keeps his ultimate promise to both Ellie and Russell, by choosing to relinquish his chapter of the book that he shared with Ellie and move on to a new chapter with Russell. Giving Russell the pin, instead of a real badge for heloing the elderly was also significant because ELLIE is the one who gave Carl that pin....and Carl choosing to pass that precious gift to Russell...probably the ONLY THING he had left of her, illustrates Carl moving on and accepting Russell as his new adventure buddy.

Fun fact, when Charles Muntz makes his promise not return until he found a live bird, there are no persons underneath the hats, it's literally just a sea of hats. Also, Charles Muntz was named after film producer Charles Mintz who stole Oswald the Lucky Rabbit from Walt Disney, promting him to quit with Ub Iwerks to form the Disney studio and made Mickey Mouse, who stole Oswald's thunder and Mintz lost Oswald to Walter Lantz studio (more famously for creating Woody Woodpecker.

Fun fact: This Movie and Inside Out have 3 Pizza Planet Truck appearances, making those 2 have the most Pizza Planet Truck appearances in Pixar. In Up, the 1st on is when Carl is floating above the city, 2nd is spotted out of the parking lot when Russell was looking at the buildings, and 3rd on a parking lot next to an ice cream shop Carl and Russell were having. In Inside Out...Uhhhhh... I actually dont know where the truck is located. Its because the 3 appearances are inside the Memories and theres like 100s of them.
