@MANCHESTER UNITED Mate not everyone has to be a soccer fan. Us Aussies are allowed to follow the real Australian game invented in Australia and a massive part of Australian culture, we don’t have to follow, need or want soccer
@@trainco1643 Agreed. I'm from the UK and was an avid Liverpool supporter for 27 years. Then I emigrated out here and got right into the AFL. My boys play the game passionately and we love going to see the Bulldogs. Dont get me wrong, I love the Premier League, but it'll be a sad day when a sport like Soccer that isn't threatened by any other overpowers a true Aussie sport like the AFL. "Up There Cazaly" to me captures that quintessential Aussie Battler mentality. Love it. 🇬🇧 🇦🇺
I remember back in '79 when this came out and I was a soldier in Townsville surrounded by men who played this strange game. I hailed from Queensland and never had much exposure to it. Well, the rest is history for me as one annual leave I went to Melbourne and spent time in Collingwood and was infected with the Black and White bug. Hearing this now gives me goosebumps and brings back very fond memories and God Bless Mike Brady. A well deserved honour.
@Sinnergism You do realise that the crowd "roar" in this song was taken from a soccer game at Wembley Stadium in the UK don't you? Yeah it suprised me too! lol :- (
mickeydiver17 so true it was so much better back then the first ago game I watched was in 2005 it was the grand final day so I saw all the old grand finals all will never be as good as it was back then
& the 1st game on this video is the Mighty Tigers taking on South Melb before they got shunted up to Sydney. Only fitting as Roy Cazaly played for The Bloods! :- )
Well HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY!!! from here in New York - after watching this I know why I am glad you guys were on our side in World War ll. Bless your people.
"me,... I like football" Back when player's had a second jobs and fans were on the same level, and player's frustrations were allowed to a certain point.
03/07/2015 R.I.P PHIL WALSH!!.. A Legend of the game!! My thoughts are with the AFL!!...And to the Adelaide crows stay strong!!!!.........................................THE.......CROWDS.......ON....YOUR .........SIDE!!!!!!!! 💐
I remember living in NSW in 1980 as a 12 year old, everyone called Aussie Rules Aerial Ping Pong. . . then this lil diddy worked it's way up the coast & suddenly it became THE song that captured the heart and soul of Australian sporting spirit
Richmond incorporated this in the game yesterday against Collingwood, and it was truly one of the most inspirational songs ever. I am one proud, Aussie footy lover. 😁 🐯
Interesting how violence on the field was tolerated much more in those days...how many weeks would Stan the man have got for that shirt front on Jezza? And how about EjW,s round house right
Happy to say that this song was a significant part of my childhood nearly every Saturday watching the footy with my grandparents. The mighty Roy Cazaly
thanks for this post, this is the first single i ever bought. I didnt have a record player went to my friends place to play it. I was the only kid who played AFL (the aussie rules)at my school in Brisbane. Whilst this song was a hit all my friends ditched rugby league and played kick to kick trying to mark speccies. Great Memories. As a kid i barracked for Fitzroy as I used to play for Acacia Ridge which had the same jumper. I had the best of two worlds when brissie and fitzroy merged.
My Father, who died in 2021, loved his AFL His favourite team was Richmond. He was buried in Richmond colours and we let gold and black balloons go into the air after he was buried. So every Saturday for as long as I can remember, he would play this song as his anthem. You must be so proud of your Great Grandfather. Rest in peace Cazaly ❤❤
I enjoy (but really not nothing about the history) of Aussie rules. However, that moment at 1:57 is one of the greatest things I have ever seen in sports.
Noooo no no thats John Greening, one of Collingwood's best ever. However his career was tragically ended by a pathetic St Kilda player called Jim O'Dea, hit him off the ball and paralyzed him then and there. It was honestly the closest thing to manslaughter that has ever happened on a footy field.

I’ve only just noticed that bit at 2:00 where the physio dude comes on to treat the injured player and whacks the other guy in the face. That’s SOOO awesome!!!! 😂
Steve bloomers watching Helping them fight Guiding our heroes In the black and the white All teams who come here There's nowhere to hide Everybody's frightened Of that derby pride D d dddd dddd Derby 🐏
I'm a pom and feckin love Aussie Rules! We don't get to see much of it over here but when we do I'm glued to it - drives the Mrs wild - sat there on a Mon night (we get it three days late here) with me bottle of imported VB and curse the Lord why I wasn't born an Aussie :( I follow the Hawks cos, besides Fitzroy who are no longer, Hawthorn are the only name I remember from when me Dad used to do the VFL pools back in the 70s/80s during the soccer close-season. AFL=best sport in the world! :D
Great comment Mate! It makes me appreciate growing up in Melbourne as an kid, and every Saturday when the competition was the VFL, we would go from one ground to another to watch the games, whether it be Hawthorn vs Essendon or St Kilda vs Footscray etc. That "one day in September" still resonates with me strongly, as the AFL Grand Final happens every year....
ahhhh back when footy was footy, not like now days, look at a guys back and he gets a free. one HELL of a song too, pumps you up big time, should be sung at every grand final!!
Something like 25 years ago I watched this football movie, I'm sure it was The Club 1980, but not certain as I have only seen it one time and I was only 7. I (Think) the ending has a "Spectacular mark" frozen image and this song plays. That's what I can remember, at least. The only lyrics I could remember where "In there like light, up there and at them, show em your might" "Fight like the devil, you're out there to win" and with that tiny bit of information I found this song 15 years later. Most of the time I hate having a good memory, but this is one of the few when it did me a favor
I was only six but does anyone remember the commentator saying " Footy You're Looking Great " after this played on game day broadcast ? When we bought the single I was disappointed that line wasn't on the record ! We were watching from country SA too!
I'm an American, but I love footy. When the trainer coldcocked the opposition player standing next to the injured player at 1:58, I almost doubled over with laughter. Does someone know the story behind that one? That was the funniest thing I've ever seen!
This song is the original and greatest Australian Rules Football theme. In 1979 it went to number 1 around Australia and at the time was the biggest selling single in Australia music history. This is when Australia was Australian and in my opinion a much better world than today.
But on weekends comes the time You can do what ever turns you on Get out and clear your mind Me, I like football But there's a lot of things around When you line them up together The footy wins hands down Up there Cazaly In there and fight Out there and at 'em Show 'em your might Up there Cazaly Don't let 'em in Fly like an angel You're out there to win Up there Cazaly You're out there to win In there and at 'em Don't let 'em in Up there Cazaly Show 'em your height Fight like…
@carouselcarouse; I’m 37 as well, and I remember getting chills up the spine at the age of 4 or 5 whenever I saw this clip or heard the song. I’d then go out the front with my red plastic ball that you’d get from the servos for $2 (I think you can still buy them). They were only good for one kick and they’d have a huge dent it them. I asked mum and dad constantly for a proper Sherrin footy, but they never gave in. I will never forgive them.
I saw the film The Game on BBC maybe 40 years ago? I remember little about the movie apart from the main character having issues that threatened his career. This tune however, was a fresh earworm when I woke up this morning, and felt compelled to listen to it again. Thanks RU-vid. mahna mahna
I'm from a town called Tonbridge in England. This song used to play before our local football (soccer) team played their games. The day they stopped playing it a bit of Tonbridge's culture died. Great song.
No, that was a trainer for the team of the player lying on the ground (John Greening). He'd just been coward punched by the standing player. There were fears at the time that Greening was dead. In the end he spent a couple of weeks in a coma, but recovered enough to return to the footy field a couple of years later.
I have a new kitten, a fishing rod with a toy mouse attached- im in tears to this soundtrack in the background as he jumps a meter or so high. - quite a few traumatic brain injuries in this video
Couple of the men in this video Bryan Wood, Trevor Barker, Peter Knights, Alex Jesaulenko, Royce Hart, Bob Skilton, Peter Hudson, Darryl Baldock, Wayne Schimmelbusch, Michael Roach, Bill Picken, Peter Moore, Simon Madden and Wayne Harmes and Jimmy Buckley after they had just stolen the 1979 Grand Final against Collingwood kicking a goal in the last minute after the ball had clearly gone out of bounds in the right forward pocket
More than 20 years ago I saw The Club at my grandmothers place. Of course, I didn't know it was The Club and I had nothing other than my memory to keep note of it. Years later when Google became a thing I tried to look it up. All I could remember were parts of the lyrics and not much else. It was enough however and brought back many good times. Really love this song
I'm pretty sure thats not the full version that was played originaly in the 70s. The one that got played with the hit music programs like you would see on a saturday morning had Robbie Muir punching another player. This one seems shortened without any fights like the original seemed to have. 2 & half minutes seems a bit short to the one that was sold in the 70s & was no1 for weeks. AnyWay.
