Patty Griffin sings a mind blowing rendition of this amazing song that she wrote in honor of Martin Luther King. The words can be found here: www.azlyrics.co... Needs to be played on a good stereo loud to be really appreciated.
I was privileged to see Patty live at a folk festival in Colorado. It rained hard the entire time. I wouldn't have missed a second of it!! Lord, what a talent!!!
Full of His Love and so Blessed By His Grace when My Father and My God ask me to come up to His Most High and So Holy Place...and He continues Asking Me To... So Amazing and So Merciful...How Truly Great Is His Salvation, Freely Given to You by His Son My Lord Jesus Christ...Amen and Amen...
This song paints such a picture of solace and comfort; "The peaceful valley, just over the mountain few come to know. I may never get there." I can just imagine that Martin Luther King would feel so honoured to have such a beautiful song written because of his own words. I truly hope he did find that valley. Such amazing people, i cant fathom the talent.
OK...Kree Harrison did a very nice cover of this song...but Patty Griffin wrote the song, has put in the miles, years, sweat & tears and deserves so much more acclaim. She is a true American treasure.
I'm from the UK and grew up on Central African, Black American and Caribbean music. My Dad played lots of Otis Redding when I was a kid. Otis has a plaintive, pleading tone to all his songs that utterly captivated my young heart and ears. It's *exactly the same childhood feeling I get with her. Soul or Folk singer? Never heard of her before today. I had to dig hard to uncover the source of the heavenly voice I heard at the end of a Nurse Jackie episode.
@1941caironewyork NO ONE can touch this Patty Griffin version .Others do an admirable job , but as the songwriter and a superb performer, her nuances and pathos brings this song to a new high .
I haven't voted a dislike, but I will say that the answer 'could' be the way the song is arranged. I love this song, and I'd never heard it sung by it's writer, and certainly her vision for it CANNOT be wrong...still, I'm just saying that for me, just looking at the words and listening only to the tune, I personally enjoy this song when sung with less emphasis given the musical production and a more singular focus on her sincere style of delivery. Truly, this is fine here; it is lovely. For me, though--I'm just sayin'. Thank you.
God, I love this song. I need to song. This song gives me motivation to live every time I hear it. I don’t know why more people don’t know Patty Griffin but I’m glad I do. And I’ve always wish more people knew Patty Griffin and I wish even more people would right now . do you know how when you’re a kid some people are unforgettable and you always remember who they are Aretha Franklin, Muhammad Ali, Dr. Martin Luther King, Nina, Simone, and so many people that will never be famous because they didn’t want to be. They are teachers people who stood up and remembered people, and demonstrated how they behaved in history to make the world a different place which is where we live now because of them.
What a voice. She only needs to sing about 3 words, and I've got goosebumps. That voice... And what command and control she has over it. It's incredible. I wonder if she gives "herself" goosebumps when she hears herself sing????
I just saw that the Boston Children's choir performed this yesterday at the Memorial service for the victims of the terrorism on Monday. What an exquisite song to capture the hurt and confusion in us all...
Everyone up on that stage shined. But of course Patty was the brightest light. She has the inherent ability to draw you right into the song. That kind of passion cannot be taught or learned. One is born with it.
I went up to the mountain Because you asked me to Up over the clouds To where the sky was blue I could see all around me Everywhere I could see all around me Everywhere Sometimes I feel like I've never been nothing but tired And I'll be walking Till the day I expire Sometimes I lay down No more can I do But then I go on again Because you ask me to Some days I look down Afraid I will fall And though the sun shines I see nothing at all Then I hear your sweet voice, oh Oh, come and then go, come and then go Telling me softly You love me so
My mom died 2 weeks ago today. This song, the lyrics, HER voice has gotten me through some of the worst days I’ve ever had. I feel a warmth, like my mom hugging me, telling me I’ll be ok.❣️❤️
I love her phrasing! She sings like she talks, no need for high notes and other bells and whistles! I believe every word and not that leaves her throat!
My niece sang this beautiful heart wrenching song at my son, Dylan's, funeral and she kicked pass! I don't understand how anyone could speak negatively about this talented woman and her contributions to our lives..rock on!
Patty Griffin is such a treasure! Her voice is almost unimaginably beautiful. She's a mighty fine songwriter, too. This is another one smacked out of the ballpark!
Patty is phenomenal, but I also tip my hat to her backing band here. They absolutely nail tasteful accompaniment that shows Patty's voice to advantage and serves the beautiful song. The whole performance is a paradox -- so well-disciplined and resonant that it soars to freedom.
My favorite singer, brings me to tears often -- tears of joy, tears of sorrow, tears of everything. I've seen her in concert how many times now .... four, I think. I can't wait to make it five, six, seven. Such an under-appreciated talent. Every one of her albums is must-hear, start to finish (well, maybe those few seconds when her parents sing along with her on "Impossible Dream" could be cut, but it's just a few seconds...).
I don't know how I have never heard of this truly awesome lady but I believe she is absolutely one of the very best songwriters and singers that I truly have ever heard and I will be looking for any of her music that I can find totally amazing
i honestly clicked this because i thought it said "up to the mountain peter griffin" and how could you not click that, especially after bird is the word but honestly, this is lovely. very lovely
i had never heard of Patty until I googled the song that i heard Crystal Bowersox sing in the finals of American Idol. It is a beautiful song and i was wanting to sing it at a karaoke club if it was available. The KJ had it in his list so i've attempted it a couple times.
