I DIY'ed this Recycled Cashmere Scarf for $4 from flawed thrift store sweaters!
This budget-friendly project is an easy sewing DIY for beginners. I am an avid thrifter and will often find destroyed or flawed cashmere sweaters at Goodwill. This sweater transformation is the ultimate Valentine's Day thrift flip and would the perfect DIY Valentine's Day gift.
It's a luxury material, and many people ask "Why is cashmere so expensive?"
I'll tell you the answer in this video, as well as why cashmere has become controversial! Companies like Patagonia have completely changed the way they sell cashmere because of unethical business practices that is hurting the goats who produce the fibers, and the land they live on.
Let me know what you think of this project, and if you will consider recycling cashmere in the future.

Well done for explaining exactly why we should source old cashmere to make something new.

Great that you rescued those sweaters with holes...I had a light green cashmere sweater that the moths did a number on...I embroidered white angora circles on the holes...they were at random on the sweater..And, it looked SO designer.

@Judy Dyer Angora wool is a fluffy fibre that comes from the soft, thick coats of angora rabbits.

You can also sew the holes with thread in the same colour !

Thank you! I love cashmere, as do the moths! I am glad to have projects for the holey sweaters, and am very interested in SUSTAINABILITY! So good to know about the goats and how NOT to buy into this commodification.

The project came out really nice! I really appreciate the facts about cashmere goats and sustainability that you included. It's very important to share knowledge and context for why our shopping habits need to change. Way to go!

I had no idea this was a thing until I got curious about why it was so pricey (and why it's damaged so much lol). I may never leave flawed cashmere behind again.

Thanks so much! Several years' ago, I found some great cashmere sweaters for my husband at a large retail store on a big sale - so I bought him a bunch! Over the years, they have gotten holes and tears at the seems from lots of wear. He still wears them around the house, but this Christmas, I finally got him two new ones and we both discovered the sad truth about how this fabric comes at such a cruel cost both for the goats and the environment. So, when he sent me your video on how to recycle the sweaters I was so happy! Thank you for showing the technique for turning some of those wholly sweaters into beautiful scarves! Can't wait to try your technique!

Thank you for the information on both repurposing cashmere sweaters and on how once again, man works some way of mistreating both the environment and the goats. I bought a few holey cashmere jumpers and am looking for ideas on what to make.

Wholly agree, no need to buy new anything. Everyone in the west at least should stop buying clothes for a year....and recycle upcycle buy used. I rarely buy new, and upcycle all the time. I have a question re the knitwear..... how do you stop the seam from 'waving'? is it with the zig zag stitch? Anyone? Thanks for entertaining and informing us with value and ethics, love it.

Was wondering how you washed the cashmere when you brought it home. I know it shrinks from previous experience with it and mohair. Any suggestions? :-(

Huh, I can't imagine goatherders shearing their goats, selling the fleece, just keep the goats and buy more and more...ridiculous and unsustainable for the herder. Goats can be shorn more than once but only once a year so it's a long time to wait. I got my info from the Cashmere Goat Association.
