Upcycle Old CD Drives into a 3D Printer (Part 2) 

Hey, I've been following your channel ever since the first CD/DVD 3d printer you made which inspired me to make my own and eventually get my hands on a full on 3d printer. I did a few things differently and I think this may prove useful to you for the 3rd part of this series!! Here are my suggestions: 1) You should definitely use some sort of firmware so you can print with slicer programs and Repetier. When I made my own CD/DVD printer a while ago using your previous tutorial the thing I did differently was using an Arduino MEGA with the RAMPS 1.4 shield and Marlin. Since you're using the Arduino UNO I'm not 100% sure what firmware works or not but I do believe there is a more "lightweight" one called Teacup but you might have to do some small changes in the firmware for the pinouts of each driver. 2) These motors are meant to run with I believe 5V or 9V originally, the voltage on my stepper drivers (A4988) was 12v which caused them to heat up alot and I did manage to burn a few on the way. Some CD/DVD drives did have slightly more bulky and more durable motors and these are the ones that seemed to last so if you do have the option, try to run them at a lower voltage if they can provide enough torque. 3) (which ties a bit with point 2) For anyone that for whatever reason cannot get their hands on any stepper motor drivers, look instead for old floppy drives, their Driver board does have an included stepper motor driver (for the floppy stepper) which can be interfaced in the exact same way as the Arduino stepper motor drivers. I've been meaning to try this for a while now but I cant find any old floppy drives near me. If you need any documentation on how to use these, look up a tutorial on singing floppy disk drives, they do just this! 4) I also did the whole 3axis setup a bit differently than every other youtube video I watched, Instead of connecting the Y and Z axis together like you did on your last video, I found it much better to connect the X-Y together by joining the two carriages in a straight angle similar to how an XY table would work and leave the Z axis stationary so it would only have to lift the hotend and this seemed to me like it would put alot less stress on the Y axis motor, if you need any examples of this you can take a look at the RepRap AtomX or I think the RepRap snappy uses the same technique. Are you going to be using the 3d printer pen, or an actual hotend and extruder, I feel that will greatly increase the quality of the prints, also I would love to see how you connect a hotend to an arduino uno, been struggling with this, my knowledge on the matter is limited, but what I have found so far is that you need a mosfet, not sure how it all connects though

I stumbled across this build on your channel sort of by accident. Of course I am a subscriber and RU-vid has been doing a lousy job of promoting my subscriptions (has usual) but I was going through my subs and happened across, this build video!! All that in mind I would LOVE to see a 3d printer built out of an old printer or even an old flatbed scanner, like it has been said the one you are building can't do big parts!!!!! WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY POINT HERE!!! I do a lot of automotive work and electronics to me is a hobby as well, and like what is needed to build 3d printers in the first place, I see where a small 3d printer like this COULD BE USED to make small brackets for wire management, or even to make "hold down devices" for hard lines (like brake and fuel lines) in a car. In fact though the printer YOU ARE building here isn't "huge" there are many small things you CAN make with it!!! And I can't wait for your next video to release so I can follow how you build more of this printer simply because I could use a small 3d printer for the reasons I just mentioned!!

Can you use wood dowel for tracks instead of metal rods

As you are using an old CD-DRIVE to do the axis, can you gave it some use to the laser in that 3d printer? That should be cool

Could it be made modular, so that you can also use it as a CNC milling machine to mill your own PCBs and things like that? I think it would be useful

I would like to use nema 17 motor for z axis since z axis is most heavier than x or y and also i would like to use a fan near 3d pen so that the filament will dry up quickly

I know a guy that has a laser out of blue ray cd and components. He inscibes "tatoes" from paper to plastics. He get about 3 inches circumferences .

Where did you get the 3d model of the stepper motor from?

Please try using as little 3D printed parts as possible because 1) Assembly may be harder 2) Wont be a total recycle
