I’m sure someone has already said this but, when Brandon says the recreance should remind us of something I think it’s definitely the reod. How Raoden’s seon acted after he got the reod seems pretty similar to how Syl lost her consciousness when Kaladin was breakin oathes
@Bookborn

Yes someone else mentioned that too! I think you guys are right. I need to reread Elantris - it's one of the only Sanderson books I haven't reread, so I'm rusty on it.
@Haxerous

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. The Recreance and effects feel very similar to what happens to Elantrians and Second after the Shaod. The Connection to the land was broken and wrecked the Elantrians and their Seons. In the Recreance, the Singers and the Spren lost Connection (to each other and Roshar to some extent) when BAM was sealed away.

I think Brandon was just referencing how Rosharians have a limited vocabulary. To them, all magic is Surgebinding. But to Khriss who studies this all the time, she uses many different terms to describe things. Just like how all birds are chickens and all fruity drinks are wine to Rosharians.

I fear Wax is getting neglected :( Tiny Mistborn Era 2 spoilers - Wax got mentioned too! Chap 29, opening note from Harmony - "I have begun searching for a pathway out of this conundrum by seeking the ideal person to act on my behalf. Someone who embodies both Preservation and Ruin. A … sword, you might say, who can both protect and kill." in Bands of Mourning, Harmony tells Wax that this is what he has in mind for him. Harmony intends to use Wax as an agent to send off world from Scadrial. I'm kinda hoping he's going to be Harmony's messanger boy to Kelsier, and that they are going to clash. If I remember right, Wax is a member of the churck of the Survivor, gonna be interesting to see him fight his world's version of Jesus

The more I think about it the Sleepless can't disguise themselves well. Nikli used tattoos to cover the gaps in the hordelings and he was considered best at imitating humans. Sixteen didn't have tattoos or other means of concealer. An Elantrian might actually fit better. One that was damaged by the Reod of Arelon but not healed by its restoration. This person would be, for the most part, dead and not need to do human things. Sixteen might be a member of the Eyree and helps maintain the Stormlight supply at Lasting Integrity.

@covya
@covya 3 года назад
I think the deadeyes comment was also pointing to Sel and the Shaod. Ba-Ado-Mishram is clearly related to connection somehow, and there is a WoB stating that Deadeyes did not exist before BAM was captured. Perhaps her capture made it more difficult for the Spren to reconnect to whichever shard they were most closely associated with, and losing their Radiants has left them without enough investiture to function properly? And when Adolin allowed Maya to draw on his innate investiture, we saw her become more "normal." Something that Sanderson said in the stream suggested that Bondsmiths were also able to prevent deadeyes when Radiants wished to break their oaths, which strengthens the Connection aspect of it for me. But this leaves me entirely unable to explain why Deadeyes don't occur whenever a Radiant dies, if spren are incapable of forming whatever Connection is required without the aid of a Bondsmith or BAM. Edit: I just had a thought, what if it's not the Elantrians partially transformed by the Shaod that he was referring to, but specifically the Hoed? Once they experience enough pain, it just causes their minds to break. I had been treating that as entirely natural trauma, but it could be the same thing that is happening to the Spren? The pain of having their Connection to their Radiants shattered breaks their minds?
@Bookborn
@Bookborn 3 года назад
I think you make a ton of good points, but I also want to throw in the part where Maya said it was voluntary. I have this weird feeling that they knew they would be deadeyes but they did it anyway? So was it something special they did DURING the Recreance that made that happen? Although, I guess that doesn't make as much as sense as yours, since Deadeyes are still being created (Shallan and Testament). Hmmm
@covya

I remember that part differently. I remember Maya saying they agreed the oaths should be broken, and knew it would hurt, but didn't know they'd become deadeyes

People act like Kal's shard plate is impregnable. It is not. He has to consciously move it to where he believes he needs it to be that impregnable. I thought his in-novel and real world explanations for spren bonding to family members was super interesting. That's his way of explaining the spiritual bond people have with those close to them, and spren use them to easily find other possible candidates. Thus it served as a rather subtle hint as to why Rlain was chosen as a candidate for a corrupted mistspren... 🤔

I believe the reason that the magic on Sel/Elantris is the "oddball" is because you have the investiture between 2 shards tangled up, that also both happen to be splintered. In Harmony's letter to Hoid, if I recall correctly he says that he is surprised the power of the shards on Sel hasn't "recollected" itself like it did on Scadrial, collecting at the Well of Ascension every 1,000 years and I'm guessing the fact that there are 2 splintered but also stagnant shards without wills to direct them and just sort of sitting there is a big part of the issue as to why the investiture/magic is extremely difficult to get off world. I can't think of any other worlds, not that we've seen at least, where you have 2 splintered shards whose power isn't being directed a bearer. I'm guessing this has something to do with it being the oddball magic system, and I'm also going to theorize that the Moon Sceptre that Hoid stole from Sel is tangled up in the answer.

One thing I'm curious about for Stormlight 5 is about Vasher and the Ghostbloods. Being that Kel is too invested to leave Scadrial could we assume Vasher is of at least close to the same investment similar to the Heralds who also can't leave. See, from what we know about Elantris, I would expect it to be the EXACT opposite. The power of Dominion and Devotion was forced out of the spiritual realm into the cognitive realm when Odium killed them. IIRC, this is the reason magics on Sel are location based, since the Cognitive realm, unlike the spiritual realm, does have the concept of "locations" but is this then inverted when it comes to moving the investiture off world? All other shards are in the Spiritual realm, where location doesn't exist, and this somehow means their investiture IS bound to a location, while the shards in the Cognitive realm, where location DOES exist, don't have their investiture bound to a location? yea, I don't know. that WoB BLEW my mind (doubly so, given that the stream started at 1am my time, so I was half asleep)

I think Brandon owes us more Elantris info, because honestly there just isn't enough to work with. My perception was that Dominion was always the problem with the land conflict, but since they'd mixed together in the the Dor... who knows. But yeah, the Dor (comprised of both their dead essenses) is locked in the Cognitive in a deadly no-no storm, so....wtf knows?

I liked how Brandon said that Kaladin is super aligned with Honor, and was thinking maybe he will take up the Honor shard? Do you have some theories that you've seen that you really like and want to see happen or some that you have come up with? And what do you think will happen in the next book, who will be Odium's champion and will Dalinar lose and have to become a fused and serve Odium? You probably have enough thoughts to put in another video :) Some of my theories... Shallan is world hopping kandra but forgot (Brandon has said there are worldhopping kandra and that a kandra could bond a spren). Nightblood was made with a Dawnshard, Rysn has one that has to do with change and maybe Nightblood has the Dawnshard of destroy. I think maybe the Dawnshards work by using anti investiture. I can see the 5th book having a "bad" ending like not poorly written but bad for the characters, and Dalinar becomes a fused
@Bookborn
@Bookborn 3 года назад
I have always thought that the ending of book five would be bad for the characters, as well. I think Roshar might get destroyed and we have to see all our characters escaping to other planets. That's why there would be a time hop, and maybe people would be separated... On our live stream last night Pete said he's heard a popular theory that Odium might choose Gavilar as his champion so that neither Gavilar nor Dalinar can win because neither would kill the other. I wouldn't get too tied to 16 relating to Scadrial when it's mentioned, Brandon has said before that 16 is hugely significant to the cosmere in general, you just have to look at the number of shards... I suspect that it's not just individual tones that all the shards will have. They will all have individual colours (black and white for Ruin and Preservation, plus green, blue and gold for Cultivation, Honor and Odium) and also god metals. We know there is at least one more god metal on top of lerasium and atium that Harmony didn't know, at that point in time at least, so it would seem likely there is 1 for each of them. There will no doubt be other things they all have in common too.

I think the reason the Seons can leave is the Bond. The same goes for the spren, the unbonded spren can not leave Roshar, but, the ones bonded with a someone I think can. Sanderson has compared multiple times Cognitive Shadows with Spren, so we know they act similar. Kelsier is looking for a way to leave Skadrial because he es bounded the same way the Spren are to their system, maybe the bond is the key.

Well I think in the live Sanderson said that spren actually can't leave Roshar? (I honestly can't remember if it was only bonded, but I got the impression no spren can leave). With the weird thing that is going on with the deadeyes, I think it might be connected to one of the unmade. I can't remember the name right now, and can't look it up. But in Rhythm of war, Kelek mentions in epigraphs about the unmade who had in the previous desolation, taken over giving out void forms. It was mentioned that the humans captured this unmade and locked it away. I feel like it was mentioned that this unmade should be released because it's capture is causing issues. I think that they are related. As far as where else we have seen it, I would think it would be Sel. Think of Elantris, I feel it might be something similar.

Yes everyone is talking about the Unmade being captured as the reason for the deadeyes. Maybe that's what Maya is talking about when it was voluntary? Who knows. It definitely has to do with Elantris since Sanderson said we needed to focus on that - I think something with how Raoden's Seod acted.

The unkeyed metal minds in the bands of mourning must have something to do with moving investiture off world. There is the metal (that I forgot the name of but, it explodes when in contact with water) this metal can store connection so it seems to me this metal can store the connection of something like a seon to it planet in a portable way. With a seon connection stored in this metal it should be able to go anywhere. This is just me theorizing I don't think there is anything solid to confirm this. Another example of this idea is the translator medallion. It fools your soul in to thinking it is from or connected to the land you are in allowing you to speak the languages of the people on that land. Perhaps a seon's soul could be fooled into thinking it is from whatever land it is in.

Could it be that the reaction to bounded Spren had at breaking oaths n become Deadeyes could be similar to the problem Elantris had? We know Elantris is an add/misfit to the rest of the Shard, I personally always thought of it as the planet itself is a living organism like Pandora from the movie Avatar or Ego from the Guardian of the Galaxy n it had a shard of power. Elantris use magic to come from the planet itself, n it can be controlled/manipulated by runes and artifacts/fabrials by those that are Investiture. Also, only the Chosen-ones/Investiture has access to use those powers. DeathEyes only started to happen after Honor was killed but it Shard/Power it still lives, we just don't know-how. On the New book DAWNSHARD (Spoiler coming) we also discover a new Shard that was sealed n living organisms composed of Billions of Microcreatures that become bigger beings of life. Roshar is also unique with constant renewable energy with Stormlight and a unique connection to the Rhythms of Shards on the Cosmere that Apparently everyone wants it n others wish to come to it. There fore where is Honor power/Shard if it still lives n where the constant renewable energy from Storms comes from? there is a lot of talk about Unbounded Bondsmiths since Honor is not around to put limits to their power making them capable of destroying the world if a mistake is made Similar to Elantris that have no boundaries on what they can do but 1 mistake n everyone is F***!

According to the audobooks it is He-Moe-lurgy. The first two syllables are identical to Hemoglobin the stuff that carries Oxygen around in your blood. And the thing the Deadeyes remind me most of is the fall of Elantris. When the magic of Elantris broke the Elantrians went from basically inhumanly beautiful and immortal (the good kind you might want) to deprecated ugly shells who couldn't change themselves although they were affected by changes from the outside sources (mostly sources of pain), which seems similarish to Deadeyes. We also know the sealing of BAM (not trying to spell the Unmade's name) at the end of the False Desolation caused something to go wrong on Roshar with the Sibling no longer hearing the correct Tone to allow it to make Towerlight. Considering that what was special about the False Desolation was that BAM was the source of the forms of power rather than Odium it seems to support this hypothesis.

@@Bookborn I just stumbled upon your channel today and subbed. I think Shalan broke her oaths with Testament after the death of her mother. She arrived in Kharbranth without a spren and bonded with Pattern there. I believe that she abandoned the shardblade that killed her mother (Not sure if theres a variation in the appearance/patterns of the specific type of sprens blades. For example, do all cryptic blades look the same?) anyway Shallan doesn't have that blade because she'd hear the screams of Testament every time she touched the blade. My theory could be wrong but I do recall that in book 2 where Shallan was trying to activate the Oathgates for the first time, she pulled out Adolin's blade and she heard screams in her mind. And in response to Alex, I do recall she kept thinking it takes 10 seconds to summon her blade, and then she mentions it to Pattern and he says it's not 10 seconds. Also, after she arrives on the Shattered Plains and falls into the chasm with Kaladin, she gives Kal her blade to fight the Chasmfiend, and Kal doesn't hear screams in his mind. I think Testaments blade must still be in Shallan's house, or was hidden by her father. The thing that I can't understand is how she always saw a glow from where the blade was hidden as a child. She kept saying that was her mothers soul. It's the only mention of a blade/spren glowing in that manner while being "trapped".
