Dr John Harris joined us at our first Summit event in 2020 where he presented on his pioneering work in vitiligo research. He’ll be joining us again to update on progress over the past two years and discuss what the future of vitiligo research and treatments might look like.
About the speaker: Dr. Harris is Chair of Dermatology, Director of the Autoimmune Therapeutics Institute, and Director of the Vitiligo Clinic and Research Center at UMass Chan Medical School. He is a dermatologist and physician-scientist, caring for patients in a vitiligo specialty clinic and running a research laboratory focused on understanding disease pathogenesis and developing new treatments. His group integrates basic, translational, and clinical research strategies to accomplish this. As a result, clinical trials in vitiligo have shown success. Dr. Harris founded Villaris Therapeutics and Vimela to develop new vitiligo treatments, as well as NIRA Biosciences and Aldena Therapeutics for inflammatory skin diseases.

This sounds so promising. Thanks Vitiligo Society. My dermatologist prescribed Azathioprine 50mg. But i don't know whether it will help me or have more side effects.

If you are located in USA you can ask for ruxolitnib it is for vitiligo. But needs to be covered by insurance because its way to expensive. But it is the first FDA approved treatment for vitiligo, quite recently approved.

@@TheVitiligoSocietyUK Is cure for vitiligo possible? If not please atleast try to develop a treatment which can permanently stop the spreading vitiligo or the patches!!

@@rohityadavv756 Currently researchers do not know enough about why vitiligo occurs to develop a cure, however this is being looked into by experts in the US. We are aware of 3 different treatments currenting in clinical trials, so we are expecting more effective options to be appearing over the next few years in addition to the recently licenced Ruxolitinib.

I was born with three small viteligo spots. After getting pregnant and having an provoked medical abortion at 23 I got vitiligo all over my body. It covers mabe 10% of my body. This is a different vitiligo - that the one I was born with. So the medications I was given to go trough the medical abortion or the pregnancy itself made this vitiligo come. That is intresting because for me it is prof what can be the reason for this other kind of vitiligo I then got. Hormones in pregnancy and or medication given for medical abortion. I then got spots not equal on boath sides. Two of the once I had when I was a kid was the «halo» ones around mole. I read that this is for protecting the mole from cancer!? So vitiligo seems like as also suggested in this video for protecting. I also wonder about this drug given for skin scancer who can make vitiligo - if that stays in our genes for generations and generations and if my fathers mother got this for skin cancer before she was pregnant with my father - and she and my father and I got viteligo after that. Can vitiligo be side effects from toxins in medications?who alter peoples genes? And effect generations after? And can hormones in pregnancy or medications in medical abortions make viteligo?(like it did in my case)… I think to find out what can cure vitiligo is to have enough data on what caused it in a lot of people. Mabe it does not need to be cured - because the body is just doing its work - attacing its own body because something should not be there - so what should not be there and from where did this enter or genes? Vitiligo as I understand it is for protecting the skin from cancer? So taking vitiligo away could then give skin cancer? Could it actually be protecting? For things inside the body? This halo is for protecting the mold. And mold can be cancerous from something inside the body? Sorry bad written questions. Vitiligo is it a sign of something wrong but a right response from the body - and what? So mabe not turn of vitiligo response to something in the body - but when the immune system have «battled» the intruder how to get the immunsystem to turn on again the skins melanocytes withput supressing the immunsystem?

We completely agree that the best way to find a cure is to understand what causes vitiligo. We need more research about it, but it does appear that there is a genetic predisposition, with individuals being more likely to develop vitiligo if a family member has it. That being said we also know once a person has vitiligo then damage to the skin can cause new patches to appear, and many people report that stress and hormones can have an effect on the development of the condition. Following recent research we conducted exploring the psychological impact of vitiligo, we are looking to next research more into when the condition occurs and how the condition develops. Vitiligo is caused by an overactive immune system, and there is research to show that people with vitiligo are less likely to develop cancer - but unfortunately there is still a lot we don't know. If you have any specific questions please email our team: hello@vitiligosociety.org.uk

@@TheVitiligoSocietyUK You write this: «A study carried out by researchers in The Netherlands has discovered that vitiligo patients have a threefold lower chance of developing both melanoma, the least common but deadliest type of cancer, and non-melanoma skin cancers, which are less dangerous but more common.» But my fathers mother died from some sort of skin cancer when she was 50 and my father died from melanoma when he was 78. That is two who had vitiligo. But I think I can tell you the obvious reason why this might be that people with vitiligo develops less melanoma. It is an no brainer. No study needed really. If you got a lot of vitiligo or spots in places visible. Most of us do not tan in the sun. Just very little. It is hurtful getting sun on the vitiligo too. It gets red. So that can be a reason for leas skin cancer in persons with vitiligo. Less sun bathing during theyr life time. My skin looks a lot younger because I never have been a lot in the sun. Never been tan. So I have like baby skin on all my body. So if then ppeople with vitiligo are getting less sun burns and not getting tanned in solariums and so on. Not getting all that UV radiation. Off course we have less melanoma.

For the first time we have dedicated researchers working on understanding the causes of vitiligo, and now we have the first FDA approved vitiligo treatment. Some small but really significant steps for our community, and we're sure there'll be more to follow.
