Agreed! I had a kidney removed and leading up to the surgery I researched so much about what could happen,read posts from people who had similar surgeries,bought everything I might possibly need or want while recovering.So much that I never got scared for the actual surgery.People were freaking out but I was laser focused on prepping and hey - it worked! And I had everything I needed and much more afterwards! So plan away! It helps.I think it gave me some feeling of control which I desperately needed.❤

Chemo/oncology nurse/long term fan here! Carry alcohol swabs (the little squares) and smell them if you have a sudden wave of nausea. Cooling cap might help prevent hair loss. Warming gloves/socks could help with chemo-induced neuropathy if you’re getting cisplatin or similar drugs (neuropathy is that pins/needles feeling). Keep eating and keep moving!!!! Get a shower chair and a detachable shower head if you don’t already have one! Showering was hard and painful for me and so was sitting all the way down in the bath. Those two things were a HUGE help to me! Lots of anti nausea medication, safe foods, spray deodorant (so other people can help you put it on), oversized clothing (my skin hurt and I didn’t like anything touching it), and a super comfy spot to relax in!

This is going to sound dumb, but Im an alcoholic who is quitting because of health...but I have alot of free time and the money I blew I want to go to something good. I can hand knit chunky blankets and donate them to my local center. I'm calling them Monday to see what people need. I see a common theme of blankets, does chemo make you cold? I only had one family member go through cancer, he was in his 80s and opted to not go through it. Id really like to do what I can to help, make blankets, donate books, ginger lozenges etc. Let me know what I can do. Sending you so much love, strength and hope.

Your heart is wonderful. You're lovely!! Way to be awesome, human.

Splurge on a teak "shower transfer bench" because 1. Pretty, 2. Fits across the whole tub so you don't have to climb over a tall tub wall if you are feeling wobbly. Or just a teak shower stool because they are way nicer than hospital plastic of most of them.

@@megameg6038my mom was also disabled for 15 yrs as a heart patient. Before passing Nice blankets for anyone long term in the hospital, can become a lifeline and support in itself…they can take it with them for hospital transfers. Hospitals are usually pretty cold in general to help prevent the growth of bacteria. My mom also loved adult coloring books. Sudoku, word searches ect. (She had a stroke) Interactive books are so helpful for them using their minds… I know it’s not specifically cancer, but just helpful ideas, and I’m also quitting drinking for surgery

I did a ton of research after my diagnosis last year, and now after going through chemo, here are some important things I learned that I wish I had known before: 1. If your chemo cocktail is one that causes hair loss, the actual process of losing it comes within aweek or two of your first treatment and it's actually pretty painful. Cutting your hair super short helps not only with the mess, but also the pain. Once it's all done coming out the pain goes away. 1b. Also if you're like me and develop foliculitis (lots of red bumps on your scalp) after the hair loss, Nizoral shampoo helps a ton, as does taking a warm wet washcloth and gently wiping your scalp morning and night. Really it just helps in general. 2. If you're looking for a sugar-free candy option, Brach's Sugar-free Lemon Drops are great and don't taste weird like other SF candies. 3. Don't be afraid to ask for help with symptom management. If what they prescribe isn't cutting it, ask for something stronger or better. You don't have to just put up with a certain level of pain/nausea. You're going through chemo, it does things to you, you're allowed to treat the symptoms. They'll start you off with not much but if you need more, tell them. 3b. Tell them what's going on with you, anything different. Your doctors and nurses know that chemo messes with you and they can usually do something about it if you're feeling any differently than baseline. Also they will yell at you for not telling them something was happening because you didn't want to be a bother.... Those are the lessons I learned the hard way. But I made it through, and you will too! Kick that cancer's ass, Grace!

I have MS, obviously not as intense as cancer, but one of the things I've learned is that there WILL be highs and lows. There WILL be times of exhaustion and being tired of fighting. But one of the things that has helped me is to change my mindset. I learned to be, what i call, wonderfully selfish. If there is a day where i just need to cry and lay around i do, or i need to buy a new stuffed animal cause my inner child wants it i do.. anything that feels rights to me, i do it without apology. It took time to mourn my old way of life and accept the new, but being able to have control in those small ways helped. You've got this Grace. You have more love and support behind you from a bunch of strangers on the internet than anyone could have anticipated at the start. And, as a fellow Jersey girl, get out your inner Gritty and kick cancers butt!

I have something similar to MS, what you said is almost scary because it’s a snapshot of my life. Think of the things you can do, not what you can’t. I fail at that miserably but it sounds nice. If you don’t know what the spoon theory is, check it out.
@jessicaseverns6578
@jessicaseverns6578 Год назад
@hannahremmel9550 yes! Spoon theory was very helpful when i first started out. It gave me words to verbalize what i was feeling. And that, alongside my wonderfully selfish concept, helped to change how i viewed those spoons and used them! Really great tip

@hannahremmel9550 Год назад
@@jessicaseverns6578 about ten years ago I had plans to go out with some friends when my mom was in town and I’d just learned about it. My hands weren’t working that night and I asked my mom to text my friend “I have negative spoons. Talk soon.” She goes, “spoons? Like the things you eat with.” Then I get a text back saying, “okay, take care and be gentle with yourself.” My poor mom was so confused. Now she understands when I say “okay, spoons are in short supply.” It’s something everyone needs to know about, not just people that have chronic pain/cancer/invisible diseases.

I went with my wife to nearly all her breast cancer treatments including chemo and my own chemo several years later. I think all you can do is deal with it the way you seem to be doing. Take it as it comes. Try as best you can not to worry about things that haven't happened yet. Just do your treatments as they come and take care of yourself during the process. And everyone is different. I wanted to know all the science. My wife, not so much. Good luck to you. Step by step and I think you'll be okay in the long run.

Stress balls helped me because my hands got super weak during chemo and I used them around my house. Also those blue disposable vomit bags, even if I didn’t use them, I felt more secure to have them around me all the time for just in case situations! Another thing is the hospital used alcohol wipes to sniff when I was coming out of surgery to stop me from feeling like I need to throw up so they might help in those times. Good luck, and don’t feel bad for asking for help from your loved ones during this time! They want to be there for you just as much as you will need them.

The very best advice I got was from a nurse who told me to look at treatment as a full time job and main priority. Meaning, your focus is getting to treatments/appts., staying hydrated, eating enough calories, getting enough protein, taking your meds, getting rest, etc. It really helped me to not feel bad and guilty about not being able to work or do more around the house, and put into perspective how important it was just to make it through treatment (remember it's only temporary!). Also, trivial advice, but avoid your favorite foods during treatment, or at least during the week following a chemo infusion. You may associate the nausea/icky feeling with the food and not be able to eat it ever again. 4 years later and I still can't eat tomato soup or vinaigrette! Wishing you the very best on your cancer journey. You've got this, Grace!

The whole having a "real" reason to be worried/anxious/etc. and then not being those things in the face of it resonates with me SO MUCH. All the pretend/stuff my brain makes up: the WORST. Actual life-changing things? Got a hold on this way better than expected. Thank you for being you and sharing with us, the internet peeps who cherish you!

i don't have much to say that others haven't but we're all rooting for you. in times like these and with topics like positivity during, i think of greg miller and his speech about how he had ridden through his cancer pretending he was okay when he was in so much pain. never feel like you have to keep positive for anyone, but we're here with you whether you want to keep having fun or need time to decompress and step away.

"It's not dark, it's fun!" Repeated enough times and it becomes true. 😂 Fr tho, thanks for these vids and keeping us in the loop even though you really don't have to! Love the haul and love that you're as okay as you can be while going through this. You've been such an inspiration and escape for so many people throughout the years. So even though it's a bit parasocial, I think lots of people share the sentiment that we care about you and genuinely wish you all the best. Thanks again for everything. You've got this!

Rooting for you Grace! Take the good days and make the most of them. I'm going through immunotherapy for Melanoma right now. While not as intense as chemo, I still have my bad days. It is such a weird time between being diagnosed and starting treatment. It's like.. you know you have this thing growing inside you, and you want it to die. But you have to wait to do the things to make it die. You have no control over when/how that process all starts. Such a weird stretch of time. But once treatment starts, it's a different "era" in the journey, and things shift. You got this Grace! 💪✨

Grace, I'm so sorry to hear that you've got breastcancer. That SUCKS. I got out of chemotherapy for breastcancer about 4.5 months ago. I tried to sum up my recommendations below. I probably forgot some things, but I hope it helps you. - Buy a shower chair. The first thing I did when I got the news and it really made showering very enjoyable. Couldn't have gone through the treatment without it. - Definitely go hard on the Adam Sandler ecstatic. 🤣 Buy baggy clothes, tracksuits, that kind of stuff. Wear what makes you feel comfortable. - I couldn't handle any perfume smells anymore, they made me nauseous. So I was only using those bodysoaps, deoderant without any perfume or alcohol etc. 0% everything - Drinking Coca cola helped with my nausea. And eating those maria cookies. Someone else recommended me bay licorice. I didn't try it but it is worth a try if everything else fails. - I would get really dry lips, so I would use Vaseline every night before going to sleep. - Your skin can get really dry. My hands especially got very dry. I would use a thick greasy hand cream (without a strong perfume, because nausea). I used the most basic Nivea cream (in The Netherlands it's the one in the blue tin). - A few times a day, rinse your mouth with salt water. Especially after eating a meal. It will help with the mucous membranes in your mouth that no longer work properly. - Try to stay active. I pushed myself to walk with the dogs 3 times a day everyday. Even if it was just a 10 minute walk. 🏃‍♀Some days it will be really hard, some days it will be al lot easier. - I hope you get to keep your hair. But if not, make sure your wig is ready to use. Make sure that you've got chemo headscarves that you can wear. Or just go bald. Whatever makes you feel the best.😊 - What really helped me was to stay in contact with people who were going through the same treatment at the same time as me. We could talk about the side effects and what we were feeling. And very important. Lots of HUMOR! That really helped me through everything. Laughing really is the best medicine. You are fighting and kicking cancers ass!💪

some ideas for "things" - most chemo can make you very sensitive to smells, even nice ones. having something specific to block them can be helpful (I ended up grabbing a mint/eucalyptus bar of soap when I was overwhelmed while grocery shopping; my mom carried a lavender wax melt); silky sleep things, like pillowcase, scarf, or bonnet are great b/c they're cooling as well as smooth; good sunglasses; more passive entertainment - I struggled to focus on reading, so needed to find things that didn't use up any brain power; a good binder to organize all the paperwork that comes with this; haven't used them myself, but Lindi is skincare supposedly designed for chemo. hope everything goes well

Hi there! I have some recommendations. I’ve never had cancer myself but was my mothers caretaker everyday throughout her cancer. 1. Plastic cups (a lot like the tumbler you have but usually it’s better for it to be light without liquid). On chemo days and sometimes for a few days after my mum couldn’t hold up thick glass or mugs so we got camping type reusable plastic cups. 2. Not quite a thing but my mum was always told she needed more calories and struggled. She would put half juice and half water in cups and drink it all day. It boosted her energy a bit as well. 3. Personally for my mum she lost a lot of weight (she was originally plus sized) so I had to buy her a new wardrobe every size she went down. She ended up liking pjs but also wanted comfy sweats that didn’t look like sweats with a bit of a “fancier” shirt (all pj material). She felt like those made her feel good on the days she needed more brightness. And finally something I did for my mum as a caretaker that always helped was every chemo day she had I’d pick her up with something small from the dollar store that would make her smile. Some days it was stickers. One day it was a plushy. But it made her feel a bit better. Oh and lastly please please please make sure your A/C and Heater (if you live in a place that need those) are looked after. I live in Canada and one day on the weekend in the winter the heating broke down and needed repaired which is hard to do while trying to make sure you keep someone warm. (Space heaters and a million blankets saved the day) It’s a long and hard battle but you can do this!!!!

Something for comfort that I recommend as a regular in hospital myself & after seeing my mum have cancer - a breastfeeding shaped pillow / triangle pillow (they go by many names haha!) but they are incredible for comfort whilst getting a drip drug and/or being in hospital for anything! As someone that's been through the cancer trip a few times, the best thing you can do is focus on your mental health. Trust your doctor's and YOUR GUT when it comes to physical health. Also my tip with weed is sort yourself a few ways to consume it and a few strains with different focus on anxiety, nausea etc. so your ready for whatever. Most doctors recommend a volcano, that's a clean dry herb vapourisor.

I really don't understand streaming platforms these days; I was in the middle of season 1 of "early RU-vidrs getting cancer", the one with Hank Green, when season 2 'Just when Grace got her life's new focus' already started.. I really hope they won't drop another season before these two end well without a cliffhanger.. (btw "Harley Morenstein hears he has some gastrointestinal malignant growth" would be where this show would jump the shark...) (srsly: ) Get well soon, Grace. Lots of strength to you and yours and indeed keep us informed when possible.

Watching you be in good spirits and optimistic/realistic is so inspiring for me. I am sorry if that’s an ick word- it is for some, less so for others. But I think maybe your positivity comes from the fact that we generally associate cancer as the worst thing that can happen. And you’re literally there. But you’re ok! And what else is there to continue to fret about when you’re here? And you’re still alive and you are still living actively. I imagine, for me anyway, that would be a huge dose of perspective. And all the things I used to ring my hands over wouldn’t seem so big or scary or even important anymore.

My mom was just diagnosed with breast cancer this April, the most helpful things through chemo have been: -body pillow (body aches!) -slippers (if you have cuts or anything on your feet and you step on things in your home you can get an infection (lowered immune system) -liquid iv (life saver- literally) -soft cozy blankets that you BRING to chemo -peppermints (to help nausea) -immodium 😅 -all the things for hemmroids 😂. If you think about it, anything that leaves your body also has chemo remnants in it. So it’s possible that will become painful! All the best to you, you’ve got this! And congrats on your recent graduate school completion🎉

I don't have cancer but do have an autoimmune disease that requires me to go sit for 6 hours of chemo every 4 months. The best thing I did for myself is buy a very cute overnight bag and keep it stocked with good stuff for chemo days. I have an extra tablet/phone charger, a really comfy soft fuzzy blanket, slippers, a notepad and pen, a favorite sweater, etc. When I need to get it ready for another chemo day, I throw a bunch of snacks (ginger chews, hard candies, granola bars), a biiiig water bottle, a book, my electronics....all the necessities. The warm fuzzy comfy stuff has been really comforting for me, so I love that you got some hoodies--consider a super soft blanket, too! Another thing I'd suggest is trying (I know, it's hard!) to look at it like a nice day off. My pre-meds make me hella sleepy, so I just curl up in my comfy clothes and my blankie and pretend I'm just having an extended nap in a comfy leather recliner. It helps, a little. You TOTALLY got this! Your wicked sense of humor is going to help you so much!
