Update the AT Firmware in Your ESP8266 WiFi Module

Update 28th November 2021
Most of the people have complained that the firmware is not available on the ESP website, but it's not true, the firmware is now available in EP8266 legacy section, and as of today can be found here.

I've spent over 8 hours trying to flash my esp8266 boards and this was the most useful and helpful video ever. Thank you so much for the time and effort on posting this video. The method of connecting the reset/flash to ground and leaving flash grounded after resetting has fixed many problems while flashing(no response, serial errors, etc). Thank you so much again!

This was a very useful video for me as I had never used an ESP-01S before and I assumed those USB adapters were capable of programming them. I did the same modification with jumper wires - it's a nice, quick way to get going albeit with some soldering. I wrote an article on using the ESP-01S with the Pi Pico. Thanks!

I manage to make it but I think maybe a missing step is to first erase whatever is on the chip and then flash it. After I erased it it worked. Thank you for this!

Great video, but in my case I had to put the Enable (EN) pin on 3.3V to be able either to read the Detected Info and to flash the updated FW into the ESP 8266 module.

Great video - concise and to the point. Took me a while to figure - but the module has to be put into AT+CWMODE=3 after flashing new firmware, otherwise AT+CWLAP returns "ERROR".

Sorry I couldn't answer this question at the moment. Please check the datasheet and also match which software version you are using on the ESP8266 device.

Happened me too. Erase it with esptool and upload the new firmware with this tool as well. It has fixed my ESP-01 after many attempts using that GUI Flash tool.

Whatever i try, my module will not respond to any serial message, i just cant figure out why

Did you tried by changing your baud rate? This is the only reason which I can think as of now

@grindfi did you end up figuring this out? I can't get my device to output anything in the serial monitor. I've tried multiple esp-01s and still nothing. I have not tried to flash them yet.

Hi, great video. Is this just for esp8266 esp-01 or can I do it even for nodemcu and wemos d1 mini version which has more io pins. Thanks for answering

Thank you for your comment. I think It will work for all esp8266 modules, but you just have to find out the correct pins to force reset and flash pin to ground as shown in the video. I have one nodemcu with me, so I can try with that and update you.

hello thanks for the great video the flash process has worked so far however I get no output on the serial monitor and when I try to upload something there is also no output on the serial monitor when requested and that with all esp01s I have flashed with it with all the same error

Is your USB to serial converter working, you can check this by shorting RX-TX line, if this works then maybe try to check your module connection with USB to serial.

Hey @mortarmax did you end up figuring this out? I can't get my device to output anything in the serial monitor. I've tried multiple esp-01s and still nothing. I have not tried to flash them yet.

The ESP8266 NON-OS BIN that you downloaded..... is no longer available on the website you link. (further adding to the confusion if anyone wants an ESP8266 to work). This tutorial doesn't work any more as a result.

I uploaded as in the video esp01-s to my card. However, the serial is constantly blinking blue LED and the serial port screen is constantly swiftly written.

Sorry, not able to understand what exactly you want to say. I would suggest you to re-watch the video properly and follow the steps. If still working, share the pictures of your setup and record your screen and mail me at laboratory.embedded@gmail.com I will try to find out what is done wrong here.

Do not worry, i had the same problem, i solved it just following the steps in the video, you should disconnect rst from ground 1 second after you click on "start" when programming the bin files

Maybe I didn't understood your comment properly. I didn't skip binary selection part, please see from 4:10 of the video, I selected each binaries and If you mean something else, please let me know, I will try to answer.
