Update: there is a fix, and here is a link to the video
The fix is in… no really, this is the fix for delayed PTT Rocky Talkie issues.
• The fix is in… no real...
I really like the Rocky Talkie radios, but the GMRS version seems to be lacking simplicity and ease of use.

This problem needs to be fixed by Rocky Talkie. Was considering these, but for $165, will not until the problem is remedied .

I was about to order two of these radios but I'm going to wait to see if this gets fixed. The delay also happens on my Baofeng UV-5Rs but it is consistent and seems like about a second. But I'm more willing to forgive a $20 radio over a $165 radio for issues like this. The whole reason to pick a more premium radio is the small details. The 2W Rocky Talkie is not an option for my uses because I want to use them kayaking where they will probably get submerged at some point. I am also interested in the max audio output of these radios. I use my Baofengs while dirt bike riding and there is a lot of wind and engine noise that the radio needs to be louder than. I clip them on my backpack strap within talking range and it works well but only at low speeds or stopped because the audio isn't super loud.

Can you get at the Menu/Programming system? Delays on the receiver are frequently related to "Battery Saver" modes. Many radios can be programmed to provide a PTT delay. Time to look under the hood.
@AdventureCruiser

I wish I could, I have no way of accessing a menu on this radio. I can find a cable with the right pin out, but without the software I’m still lost.

I know they were on the same channels, but could that have anything to do with the GMRS going through a repeater? Do you get the same results on a non-repeater channel?
@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 5 месяцев назад
Great thought, and I would expect that through a repeater but this was simplex (direct).

Could it be because the radios are so close together?
@AdventureCruiser

Fair question, and that was my first thought too. So we did the same test at various distances from a few yards to a few thousand yards. Under those parameters it should normalize. The Mountain Radio had no issues under the same test.
@djsoundzentertainment42
@djsoundzentertainment42 5 месяцев назад
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the battery saver feature. Radio is "asleep" and needs a second to "wake".
@rockytalkie1682
@rockytalkie1682 5 месяцев назад
That’s correct, while some of this delay was the weather alert monitoring modes (see our pinned reply above) there is some inevitable delay caused by battery saving features. We use a variable battery save mode on the Rocky Talkie that depends on how long your radio has been inactive to help save battery life while maintaining good responsiveness in conversations.
@YouTubeBrennanB
@YouTubeBrennanB 5 месяцев назад
I get the same delay on Baofeng FRS radios (F8X). I thought it was related to DCT/CTSS tones taking a split second to start “listening” on the receiving radio.
@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 5 месяцев назад
That’s not been my experience with any other radio, and in theory the PL/DCS tone is a sub-audible tone that should instantly unlock the receiving radio. I’ve even tried with no DCS active. Very strange.
@cpreovol

@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 5 месяцев назад
@@cpreovol I haven’t found one, but it also seems less like squelch and more like the radio needs a moment to wake up before transmitting.
@rockytalkie1682
@rockytalkie1682 5 месяцев назад
Privacy codes are definitely another factor in the delay your radio experience, as your radio needs to process the tone before playing the transmission! There are always trade offs for certain features but hopefully with all the information, you can make choices based on your use case!

The repeater you have your radio connected to receives and records then sends right back out not the radio issue.

Digital systems do the same. It's not a failure. Just key up, put the radio to your face, then start talking. There's your half second. It's just called training.
@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 5 месяцев назад
I understand where you’re coming from, but again, if you have not owned one of these do you really understand the frustration in the delay? Yes I understand digital systems have a delay. I’m very familiar with that. These have an abnormal inconsistent delay sometimes up to four seconds. In my opinion, these are not an improvement over the prior model. That’s my point.

@@AdventureCruiser I haven't tried one myself, but some ham buddies like the color screen, and maybe a slightly better audio both ways. It is really just the replacement for the UV-5R that they just updated a bit. All of the accessories fit it.

Just wait a second to talk dude. The receiver scanning frequency is too high, in order to save battery. In a Beofang radio is the exact same thing by default, but that can be easily modified on the menu, by reducing such frequency.

😂 $165 each for that thing? It will always be a dud for that price (it should be $50)! I would rather spend $139 for a BTech GMRS PRO (Bluetooth, texting, digital compass, GPS, off line trail maps, etc..)!
@GrizzintheWoods
@GrizzintheWoods 5 месяцев назад
Well the original Rocky Talkie radio is meant for everyone to use kids included. You need to have a GMRS license to legally operate Rocky Talkies GMRS radio. Any licensed radio operator knows you need to wait a second before speaking into a radio. For 80% of people the original radio is more than sufficent.
@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 5 месяцев назад
I see your point, but you’re missing a small point which is that a GMRS license of one individual covers the use of others in your party. 47 C.F.R, Part 95 Subpart E. Also, have you tried this on a Rocky Talkie GMRS?
@GrizzintheWoods
@GrizzintheWoods 5 месяцев назад
@@AdventureCruiser Yes I'm well aware that the license covers all your family members. I do have a GMRS license. But like you said if your son is only giving one word responses then it is up to the license holder to properly train him to hold 1 second and then speak. I have not used the Rocky Talkie GMRS yet, will be soon. But I do have several other higher end GMRS radios and all of them do require a 1 second hold before you begin talking. Thus going back to my original comment.
@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 5 месяцев назад
@@GrizzintheWoods I see your point, but I dare you to buy one of these and test it yourself. In today’s testing the delay is randomly between one and FOUR seconds delay from the time that you push the PTT to the time it transmits. this is not a standard delay between a push to talk and transmission. I understand the point you’re trying to make about a slight delay, but this is a very abnormal delay.
