I really appreciate the small details you put into this video. I've been messing with ford's my whole life and how you describe the ping noise and lit things really go along ways. People forget they know more than other and forget the small details in these videos. Thanks again. Followed the video to a T and did great.

Glad to hear. We struggle with "too much info" or "too little info" I'd rather over inform than under.

Without a press that is the way to do it too...

I owned a '78 F150 for many years, and replaced the carrier bearing many times. I never had access to a press, and never cut a race in two. They slide on, they'll slide off. Use a big hammer, a long sturdy punch, and plenty of spray lube. (It helps to start spraying it down a couple of days in advance.) They can be tough to get started, but once they do, can usually be driven off without undue difficulty. Try it. If it doesn't work for you, you can still cut the bearing off as shown in the video. Of course, if you have a friend with a press, it's worth buying them a six pack or a pizza not to have to fool around with either of those methods.

MaoTseHelen thanks for the advice. I’m also considering just going to a one peace driveshaft.

@@rdd014r You're welcome. The problem with the one-piece driveshaft idea, at least in my case, was that the drivetrain has to have some "give" somewhere between the transmission and differential to accommodate suspension movement. On a one-piece drive shaft, that's usually accomplished with a slip yoke on the back of the transmission. The splined portion in the middle serves that function in a carrier-bearing arrangement. Unfortunately, my transmission had no provision for a slip yoke, and I never could come up with a practical or economical way to add one. Depending on the transmission you have, that may or may not be a problem. If not, then go for it! I'd have done it in a heartbeat if I could have figured a way to make it work without replacing the entire transmission.

There is a tool called a bearing splitter that can be used with a press or bearing puller. It's way easier than a cut off wheel. The other option is a hammer and chisel. Shatter the bearing outer race and start driving it off with the chisel. Same method is used for the bearings on the rear axles. The carrier bearing is best installed using a piece of tubing that fits over the splines and drive it on.

My bro I got the same issue with the ruby red cheeks. I’m 40, about to be 41 in October and I have NOT found any explanation other than the doctors “it could be lupus?” Keep the repairs comming cause my truck needs all these tips and tricks.

Good for you, most of these guys nick the drive shaft with the wheel.

18:30 "that is one tooth out". but the illustration shows that the front yoke (the part that stays on the trans) and slip yoke should be clocked 90 degrees from each other . at 0:40 when removing , they weren't clocked , but aligned . which is correct please . thanks .

I noticed and the end of the video while you we're driving done the rode how much play there is in the steering wheel, and I have the same thing in my 1967 Ford F-250. Is there a way to tighten up?
@stever.7008
@stever.7008 4 года назад
You didn't mention it, but it looks like the slip yoke was 90* out of phase when you pulled the drive shaft out, did you correct that when the drive shaft went back in? Could have been the cause of the vibration, and a new mid bearing would probably absorb the vibration better than the old one.
@AutoRestoMod

We realized it after we shot the video and put the Ford illustration up near the end of the video to show correct phase.

Did you put that retaining ring back on? I don't know what it's called or what it's function is.

Yes but it didn't make the video

I don’t understand why the shaft yokes were 90 out. I thought they were supposed to be in phase?

I don't know if you'll see this, but I have a question. I have a 67 F 100 that when I went to change the carrier bearing, I noticed that the yoke was not in line with the other universal joint. Someone has been here before. My question is, is there a way to make sure the shaft is still balanced if I just turn it to line up, or do I just drive it and see if it vibrates? Also the dust cover is gone, and the new bearing didn't come with one. Is that a disaster waiting to happen? Is that part hard to find?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 4 года назад
Hey, We would just change the phasing (move it to the Ford correct set up shown in the episode) and see what it does. The dust cover will extend the life, It would be a good idea to have one. You'd have to find a truck (or a carrier bearing that came with one) and use that. Keep in mind that if the truck isn't on the street or dirt roads a ton you will most likely be fine.

@@AutoRestoMod Thanks for the reply. I will try changing it and see what happens. Who knows how long it's been this way. I noticed the rear trans seal is leaking. Maybe at least partially caused by the drive shaft problem? I will change it all around when I do the seal and bushing.

Yes. I am having issues with the videos occasionally when it comes time to have the computer prep them for upload. If I pull an earlier ad it will drop the audio...even though it is there in the edit program. I'd gotten comfortable and not checked it. Figures.

I get the carrier bearing but why do the u joints need to be replaced? How do I know if I need to even bother on my truck?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 4 года назад
Cheap insurance, and if the carrier has been crapped out for a while, it can effect the unis. A vibration at the carrier is going to shake the joints, that will cause damage over time.
